BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects and associated mechanisms of arctiin, a lignan compound found in burdock, on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. Also, the effects of arctiin supplementation in obese mice fed a high-fat diet on adiposity were examined. MATERIALS/METHODS: 3T3-L1 cells were treated with arctiin (12.5 to $100{\mu}M$) during differentiation for 8 days. The accumulation of lipid droplets was determined by Oil Red O staining and intracellular triglyceride contents. The expressions of genes related to adipogenesis were measured by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. For in vivo study, C57BL/6J mice were first fed either a control diet (CON) or high-fat diet (HF) to induce obesity, and then fed CON, HF, or HF with 500 mg/kg BW arctiin (HF + AC) for four weeks. RESULTS: Arctiin treatment to 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes markedly decreased adipogenesis in a dose-dependent manner. The arctiin treatment significantly decreased the protein levels of the key adipogenic regulators $PPAR{\gamma}$ and $C/EBP{\alpha}$, and also significantly inhibited the expression of SREBP-1c, fatty acid synthase, fatty acid-binding protein and lipoprotein lipase. Also, arctiin greatly increased the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its downstream target phosphorylated-acetyl CoA carboxylase. Furthermore, administration of arctiin significantly decreased the body weight in obese mice fed with the high-fat diet. The epididymal, perirenal or total visceral adipose tissue weights of mice were all significantly lower in the HF + AC than in the HF. Arctiin administration also decreased the sizes of lipid droplets in the epididymal adipose tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Arctiin inhibited adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes through the inhibition of $PPAR{\gamma}$ and $C/EBP{\alpha}$ and the activation of AMPK signaling pathways. These findings suggest that arctiin has a potential benefit in preventing obesity.

As mentioned in this paper, ignition reac- tion tests of ignitable re-burning of explosives packing material waste (solid butadiene) confirmed that ignition was easily occurred, and that even small ignition sources were easily ignited and burned quickly and explosively. In particular, when explosives are loaded into incineration wastes in large quantities and mixed with organic compound wastes, such as fire and explosion accidents caused by explosives packing materials at waste disposal sites, flammable and oxidative gases are generated due to mutual oxidation and pyrolysis It is confirmed that there is a possibility that ignition sources such as spark ignite and instantaneously lead to explosion. It is hoped that this study will be a small reference for on - site detection in the field of fire, and it is expected that the fire - fighting agency will be recognized as a fire investigation agency and will contribute to the improvement of the credibility.
CaO-based by-product, which consist of CaO, $SO_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and so on, has being used to raw materials of CaO compound. When It was applied to recycling water of remicon, concrete performance can be enhanced because hydration reaction of powder material is accelerated. In this study, activated-sludge, which was putted desulfurization gypsum of CaO-based in recycling water, was manufactured to verify effect of them, and then they was investigated by characteristics of cement matrix and mortar. As a results, they indicated reduction of setting time and high soundness in cement matrix, and acceleration of hydration reaction can be verified by XRD analysis. Also, it can be maintained good workability if water content by usage of desulfurization gypsum, which used for production of activated-sludge, was adjusted. In addition, it can be verified strength development by activated-sludge although cement content by usage of desulfurization gypsum was reduced.
The aim of this research is to understand the characteristics and status of existing public facilities, in order to propose the necessary basic materials for the planning and development of improved public facilities to assist communities. Objects of this research are the public facilities provided by the Government throughout the 25gu in Seoul. The methods of this research were carried out through the home page of each facility, telephone inquiries and gujung backseo. Investigations were carried out 3 times between the periods of January-June and September in 2009. Results of the research are as follows - 1) Through the investigations of classifications and distribution status of 5 public facilities over 25gu, quantity supply problems were analyzed. 2) Building distributions of 5 public facilities were classified by types and analyzed. 3) A number of compound facilities were classified and analyzed to determine the complexities of the 5 public facilities. 4) Complex types and characteristics of public facilities in 25gu in Seoul were analyzed. Based on the results of the research, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Public facilities throughout the 25gu in Seoul have common characteristics and functions and they are spread out evenly in each gu. This means that public facilities are standardized in Seoul. Characteristic public facilities suitable to each gu should be planned accordingly. 2) Public facilities in Seoul show a single form of one facility. Therefore, initiative plans for the complexity of facilities are required. 3) Complex public facilities in Seoul need to be the center of community life in each gu. It is necessary to take into account the diverse life styles and classified needs of residents for complex facilities. Based on the research, complex types such as public administrative+cultural facilities, culture+welfare facilities, medical+welfare facilities can be presented. These complex types should not be classified according to any particular use, but they should be commonly used by diverse generations and every social class. The inquiries of users of public facilities and the programs of each public facility are not included in this research. Thus, the reseaarch limits the proposals for complex public facilities. In the future, the characteristics of each gu in Seoul should be studied and understood, so that appropriate public facilities and their complex plans can be researched continuously and necessarily.
This research was conducted to investigate antioxidant activities of Juglans mandshrica forages by the irradiation of far infrared ray during leaf drying processes before compound extraction, with its potential use for activating antioxidants. The contents of total phenolics and flavonoids in the basis of a gram leaf dry weight were maximized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation. Total phenolic content was 25.43 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 21.12 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. Total flavonoid content was 39.38 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 32.78 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. The contents were decreased when the condition of far infrared ray irradiation was higher voltage and longer treatment time, exhibiting 16.93 mg/g of total phenolics and 23.78 mg/g of total flavonoids in 30 min at 50 V of far infrared irradiation. The antioxidant activities were shown to positive relationships with the contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids. In this study, we concluded that content of bioactive molecules relating antioxidant activity in Juglans mandshrica forages is optimized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation for leaf drying process.
82 species of Korean medicinal plants were measured to their SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity, total phenol and individual phenol compounds. The SOD activity of medicinal plants was varied from 3.67% to 48.3%, and especially, 4 species including Polygala tenuifolia Willd. showed activity over 40% higher than other species. The 16 individual phenol compounds concentrations have a severe variation in medicinal plants. Codonopsis lanceolata is the highest concentration $(12,176\;{\mu}g/g)$, and 10 species including Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch were showed to concentrations more than $1,000\;{\mu}g/g$. And also, salicylic acid was generally found in many plants, but trans-cinnamic acid, naringenin and kampferol was little found in plants. The total phenol by Folin-Dennis methods showed a respectively variation $(3{\sim}249.731\;{\mu}g/g)$ in 82 medicinal plants, and 7 species including Astragalus membranaceus showed low total phenol concentrations less than $10\;{\mu}g/g$. In conclusion, we expect that selecting medicinal plants with high biological activity might develop to chemicals related to antioxidants, as well as these become most popular substance at many industrial materials, and suggest to more researchs in future.

Recent studies to improve reinforcement of structures have developed stiff type Polyurea by using highly polymized compound Polyurea, but the reinforcing effect of it appears to be merely good. To find the proper usage of Polyurea as structural reinforcement, stiff type Polyurea has developed by manipulating the ratio of the components that consist flexural type Polyurea and the developed stiff type Polyurea shows higher hardness and tensile capacity. The reinforcement effect evaluation of has been performed by the polyurea applied RC slab specimens, and the reinforcement effect of the combination of fiber sheet and polyurea has been tested. The results shows that the Polyurea applied specimens have significant improvement on hardness and ductility compare to those of unreinforced. Also, the specimens that stiff type Polyurea is sprayed on fiber sheet reinforcement has higher reinforcing effect than only sheet reinforced specimens. However, the specimens that and fiber sheet attached after polyurea applied on showed that the high toughness of fiber sheet restrains the ductile behavior of Polyurea due to the high ductility, thereby the specimen suffers the concentration of load, which leads the brittle fracture behavior.

We investigated the protective effect of UVB inducing photodamage from mulberry extract (ME) and Lithospermum erythrorhizon extract (LE). The contents of total anthocyanin and shikonin as a color compound of ME and LE were 4.92 mg/g and 9.58 mg/g, respectively. The electron donating ability and superoxide radical scavenging activity of ME were 84.32% and 76.34%, respectively. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity of the ME ($545.37{\mu}moles$ TE/g) was higher than LE ($427.18{\mu}moles$ TE/g). MMP-1 production in the HS68 cells were exposed to UVB suppressed by treatment with $200{\mu}g/mL$ of ME (68.6%) and LE (32.7%). ME and LE were applied to a skin aging mouse model, which was induced by the irradiation of UVB to the backs of hairless mice. The value of skin erythema index, wrinkle depth and thickness, epidermis thickness, and collagenous fiber damage in the experiment groups (MEL: ME 3%, MEM: ME 5%, MEH: ME 7%, LEL: LE 3%, LEM: LE 5%, LEH: LE 7%) were remarkably reduced than in the control group (only UVB exposure group), while water capacity increased. The level of total wrinkles depth in the skin was decreased to be 30% of the control group by MEH and LEM. These results suggest that ME and LE are useful cosmetic materials for skin protection against UVB-inducing.

Legumes are one of the largest families of crop plants and are widely consumed and produced for their nutritional and commercial benefits. Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) is a legume crop that contains various functional compounds ; moreover, it has strong antioxidant properties and is becoming an increasingly important food crop. However, most previous studies on mung beans have focused on their primary metabolites. In this study, we investigated the composition and contents of phenolic compounds, fatty acids, soyasapogenol and tocopherol in mung beans cultivated in different regions and cultivated at different seeding dates. Material analysis was conducted using the following methods: LC-MS/MS, GC-FID and HPLC-ELSD. In total, 57 different samples were analyzed. Thirteen phenolic compounds were detected in mung beans. Of these, vitexin and isovitexin were the most abundant compounds, accounting for approximately 99% of phenolic compounds. The difference in phenol compounds according to the seeding dates of mung bean was not statistically significant. The total fatty acid content in beans was the highest in Pyeongchang. Significant differences in total fatty acid content were found according to the cultivation regions. Crops grown in Sohyeon and Dahyeon showed the highest soyasapogenol B content in the Suwon region, and these were the lowest in Jeonju. The total tocopherol content of beans cultivated in Dahyeon and Sohyeon was the lowest and highest in Pyeongchang. Soyasapogenol B and total tocopherol content were not significantly different according to seeding dates. This study was conducted to obtain basic data for the cultivation of mung beans with a high content of various functional materials in terms of regional specialization and optimal seeding time.
Saururus chinensis is a perennial plants, its flavonoid compound is known to exhibit anti-oxidative activity. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of Water Extract and Solvent Fractions of Saururus chinensis on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-invasive of Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-2) and MMP-9 activities. Plant samples were fractionated into hexane, CHCl3, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water fractions, and each of these was assayed individually. The water fraction showed the highest extraction yield at 9.25%(w/w). Anti-oxidative activity was analyzed by DPPH assay. Cell viability was detected by the MTS assay. Anti-inflammatory activity was assayed by the nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse macrophage Raw 264.7 cells. The activity and mRNA expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in human oral squamous carcinoma YD-10B cells were examined by zymography and RT-PCR. As results, MMP-2/-9 activation was increased in PMA induced YD-10B cells. In PMA-treated YD-10B cells, the increased mRNA expression and protein activation of MMP-2/-9 were significantly inhibited in the ethyl acetate fraction. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest anti-oxidative activity at 73.38%. The ethyl acetate fraction at non-cytotoxic concentrations significantly exhibited the anti-inflammatory activity of Raw 264.7 cells in dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from a chinensis water extract potentiates a promising therapeutic anti-invasive agent and, therefore, as an anti-cancer drug for cancer prevention and therapy in oral cancer.
