  • The Yoon Jeung residence is a well-known and prototypical aristocratic house example showing typical and interesting characteristics of the traditional houses in the middle region of Korea. When it comes to understanding the architectonic characteristics of a Korean traditional house, it was not easy to actually capture the compositional and/or constructional knowledge of the building even though it is a wooden building with many wooden members showing their compositional relations. Now with the help of the BIM tool, the Building Information Modeling tool, we could actually be able to compare and analyze each member and their compositional relations. In this paper we examine the unique traditional composition method used in extending the building's structural sections utilizing the bended-joint characteristics of traditional buildings with exemplar case of the Yoon Jeung residence. Thereby we examine those relationships among three major compositional parts namely the plan based spatial compositions, the upper wooden compositions and the roof forms so as to specify the building's typical characteristics with reasonably acceptable causes. The inner and outer block of the residence are handled with their bended-joints with more detailed knowledge of categorization by way of joint relationships among members.

  • In contemporary society, Labyrinth and maze are used with the same meaning. They are also used by translating various meanings. But labyrinth and maze are exactly different meaning. The purpose of this study is to inquire about difference for understanding essential meaning between labyrinth and maze. First of all, this study is to grasp composition principles and the characteristics of space through example of labyrinth and maze from ancient to contemporary, prescribe about essential meaning between labyrinth and maze and examine contemporary architecture which is fit for essential meaning. As compositional Principle in labyrinth and maze applied to comtemporary architecture, the labyrinth are centrality, property of one-sideness, determinable space, on the contrary the maze are out of centrality, property of multi-sideness, indeterminable space. Finally, The aim of this paper is analyze exhibition space that suit to the characteristics of composition principle and find the characteristics in labyrinth and maze. Examples of exhibition space are Aldo Van Eyck's 'Sculpture Pavilion', Kazuyo Sejima's '21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art', Ben van berkel's'Museum Het Valkhof'. These research we studied the visitor's circulation and the architectural structure in exhibition space with the spatial characteristics and the compositional principle in labyrinth and maze.

  • The bandgap characteristics of semiconductor materials are an important factor when utilizing semiconductor materials for various applications. In this study, based on data provided by AFLOW (Automatic-FLOW for Materials Discovery), the bandgap of a semiconductor material was predicted using only the material's compositional features. The compositional features were generated using the python module of 'Pymatgen' and 'Matminer'. Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCC) between the compositional features were calculated and those with a correlation coefficient value larger than 0.95 were removed in order to avoid overfitting. The bandgap prediction performance was compared using the metrics of R2 score and root-mean-squared error. By predicting the bandgap with randomforest and xgboost as representatives of the ensemble algorithm, it was found that xgboost gave better results after cross-validation and hyper-parameter tuning. To investigate the effect of compositional feature selection on the bandgap prediction of the machine learning model, the prediction performance was studied according to the number of features based on feature importance methods. It was found that there were no significant changes in prediction performance beyond the appropriate feature. Furthermore, artificial neural networks were employed to compare the prediction performance by adjusting the number of features guided by the PCC values, resulting in the best R2 score of 0.811. By comparing and analyzing the bandgap distribution and prediction performance according to the material group containing specific elements (F, N, Yb, Eu, Zn, B, Si, Ge, Fe Al), various information for material design was obtained.

  • This paper suggests a conditional simulation framework based on multiple data transformations for geostatistical simulation of compositional data. First, log-ratio transformation is applied to original compositional data in order to apply conventional statistical methodologies. As for the next transformations that follow, minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF) and indicator transformations are sequentially applied. MAF transformation is applied to generate independent new variables and as a result, an independent simulation of individual variables can be applied. Indicator transformation is also applied to non-parametric conditional cumulative distribution function modeling of variables that do not follow multi-Gaussian random function models. Finally, inverse transformations are applied in the reverse order of those transformations that are applied. A case study with surface sediment compositions in tidal flats is carried out to illustrate the applicability of the presented simulation framework. All simulation results satisfied the constraints of compositional data and reproduced well the statistical characteristics of the sample data. Through surface sediment classification based on multiple simulation results of compositions, the probabilistic evaluation of classification results was possible, an evaluation unavailable in a conventional kriging approach. Therefore, it is expected that the presented simulation framework can be effectively applied to geostatistical simulation of various compositional data.

  • In binary solidification compositional convection in a porous mushy layer influences the quality of the final products. We consider the mushy layer solidifying from below with a constant solidification velocity. The disturbance equations for the mushy layer are derived using linear stability theory. The basic-state temperature fields and the distribution of the porosity in the mushy layer are investigated numerically. When the superheat is large, the thickness of the mushy layer is relatively small compared to the thickness of the thermal boundary layer. With decreasing the superheat the critical Rayleigh number based on the thickness of the mushy layer increases and the mushy layer becomes stable to the compositional convection. The critical Rayleigh number obtained from the continuity conditions of temperature and heat flux at the mush-liquid interface is smaller than that from the isothermal condition at the upper boundary of the mushy layer.

  • Along with the development of creative building design ideas, how to effectively sign design concepts is also an important consideration on environmental design. The research goals established in order to solve these problems are to develop structures of sign design and analyze the cases of it. This paper explains structures of sign design in two ways: the compositional elements of signs and the relationships of visual perception. Among various relationships among sign design compositional elements this study uses relationships based on the Gestalt theory, the balance theory by Rudolf Arnheim, and the optical away theory by Gibson. The design principles investigated on the basis of the visual perception theories include the relationships between compositional elements and background space, visual weight balance, horizontal and vertical balances, grouping, and visual layout patterns

  • Due to recent climate abnormalities, the form of rainfall is changing to localized torrential rains. Localized torrential rains cause flooding in urban areas. In addition, in various industrial fields, there are cases where materials necessary for the process are kept outdoors, and damage from material loss and flooding of stockyards occurs during heavy rain. Accordingly, it is necessary to introduce a drainage layer where flooding is expected. This drainage layer places the aggregate inside and allows rainwater to penetrate and drain into the voids between the aggregates. However, the amount of voids differs according to the particle size distribution and particle size of the aggregate, and the drainage performance varies according to the compositional location of the aggregate. Therefore, in this study, the drainage characteristics according to the particle size, particle size, and compositional location of aggregates are analyzed using a fluid analysis program.

  • Objectives: To examine whether the socioeconomic characteristics of communities (contextual effects) are related to the self-rated health of community residents after controlling individual characteristics (compositional effects). Methods: A linked data set including information on individuals from raw data of 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey(KNHNS) and information on the regions where the individuals lived from the socioeconomic statistical indices of Si-Gun-Gu (city-county-ward) in 1998 was established. The contextual factors of communities were generated from these socioeconomic indices through factor analysis. The contextual effects of community over and above the individual characteristics on the self-rated health were investigated using multilevel analysis. Results: The contextual factors of the community expressed as the factor scores have influence on the self-rated health of their residents above the compositional factors. When the communities were categorized into 5 groups (highest, high, middle, low, lowest) according to each of their factor scores, for factor 1 reflecting urbanization reversely, the residents of the communities that had the high, middle, and low factor scores showed significantly poor subjective health status than the residents of the lowest (most urbanized) group. For factor 2 reflecting community services and health resources, the subjective health status of the residents gradually became poorer when the group went from the highest to the lowest, and the low and lowest groups showed a significant difference. For factor 3 reflecting the manufacturing industry, as compared with the communities that have the highest factor scores, the other 4 groups showed significantly poorer subjective health status. And for factor 4 reflecting the scale of the regional government, as compared with the middle group, the rest of the 4 groups showed significantly better self-rated health. Conclusions: There existed regional contextual effects on their residents' health in Korean adults. To make policies tackling these contextual effects possible, more elaborate researches to find more specific factors and to explain the mechanisms of how health is influenced by the contextual factors are needed.

  • Studies were performed to 1) investigate if ferric iron bound in complex with iron-solubilizing meat components is absorbable, 2) compare the relative iron-solubilizing capaicty of meats, and 3) investigate the physicochemical and compositional characteristics if meat meat has iron-solubilizing components . Iron-solubilizing components of beef were isolate from pH 2 HCL homogenates into dialysis bags(MWCO of 6-8K). Radiolabelled iron complexes were then generated using ferric iron and the isolated low-molecular-weight components(ILC) from undigested beef or ascrobate. The bioavailabilities of radioiron in these complexes or as ferric iron were measured as radioiron absorption into the blood one hour after injection into ligated duodenal lops of rats. Iron absorptions were ferrous -ascorbate complexes(18.8$\pm$2.2%)> ferric-ILC complexes(4.9$\pm$0.6%)>ferric iron (23.2$\pm$0.3%)(p<0.05). ILC from 0.1g of beef, pork, chicken, fish , or egg white were added to 400$\mu$g ferric iron in pH 2 HCL, the pH raised to 7,2, and soluble iron determined in the supernatant after centrifugation at 2,500g for 10 min. Iron solubilizing capabilities of ILC were pork (99.9$\pm$0.1%)>beef(93.6$\pm$3.5%)> chicken (75.8$\pm$1.8%) > fish(64.6%$\pm$3.6%)>egg white(50.9$\pm$0.9%)(p<0.05). The compositional and physico-chemical characteristics of the ILC from the above dietary protein sources were investigated.
