Analysis of electrical, thermal characteristic of Nano/Micro Epoxy composite (나노/마이크로 에폭시 복합체의 전기적, 열적특성 분석)

  • Polymer nanocomposite has been attracting much attention as a new insulation material, since homogeneous dispersion of nm-sized inorganic fillers can improve various properties significantly. In this paper, various kinds of epoxy based nanocomposites were made and AC breakdown strength of Nano-TiO2 and micro-silica filler mixture of epoxy based composites were studied by sphere to sphere electrode. Moreover, nano- and micro-filler combinations were adopted as an approach toward practical application of nanocomposite insulation materials. Nano-TiO2 particle size is about 10nm and composites ratio was resin (100) : hardener (82) : accelerator (1.5). AC breakdown test was performed at room temperature (25 [$^{\circ}C$], 80 [$^{\circ}C$] and 100 [$^{\circ}C$] in the vicinity of Tg (90[$^{\circ}C$]). And thermal conductivity were measured by ASTM-D5470.

Improvement of surface insulation properties of engineering thermoplastics by using nano/micro composite (나노/마이크로 컴포지트를 이용한 엔지니어링 열가소성 플라스틱의 표면 절연 개선)

  • Engineering plastics have excellent electrical properties, mechanical strength and various characteristic which include chemical resistance, environmental resistance, weatherability at a wide temperature range. It has good characteristic(light weight, good productivity) as compare with epoxy or porcelain insulators. However, engineering plastics not suited to outdoor insulator because it isn't hydrophobic. Therefore, to over come these critical problems, we improve the surface insulation characteristics of engineering plastic by coating micro-, nano- size inorganic fillers added to RTV-SIR(Room temperature vulcanized-silicone rubber) at this plastic surface. The effect is analyzed through salt-fog test, tracking test. In conclusion, the engineering plastic coated RTV with micro-$Al_2O_3$20[phr], nano-Al(OH)3 1 ~ 3[phr] improved much better than the others.

  • Insulation systems in Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGC) are vulnerable to sloshing impact and fatigue loads because of waves. If gas leaks into the primary barrier, the Flexible Secondary Barrier (FSB) prevents the leakage of gas in this system. Fatigue strength of the FSB largely depends on the behavior of composite materials. In this study, a new system is applied to the FSB using aramid fiber to improve the fatigue strength of the secondary barrier, with the intention of replacing conventional E-glass fibers. The manufacturing method involved varying the ratio of the aramid fiber to the E-glass fiber for optimum design of the FSB. The fatigue tests results of the secondary barrier using aramid fiber were superior to that using E-glass fiber. The statistical analysis is performed to obtain the fatigue test results and estimate the probability of failure as well as the design guideline of LNGC secondary barriers.

Recycling of Sound Insulation Headliner Waste Material (흡음재 폐기물의 재활용 방안)

  • The headliner was made of polyurethane(PU) and glass fiber(GF) composite materials are widely used as a sound insulation material. A large amount of waste materials occurs as a by-product in the headliner manufacturing process. In order to efficiently reuse the headliner waste materials, separation process of the components are very necessary. According to the results of thermal analysis, weight loss showed increase in the order polyurethane foam> non-foaming polyurethane> non-woven fabric> 1st layer> glass fiber in the range of up to $400^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the DSC characteristics, HDPE, LLDPE, PP, and Master Batch by adding additives the wasted scrap. As a result, except for the PP, there was no exothermic transition due to the crystallization.

  • So that high-strength and electrical properties apply by excellent high voltage insulator electricity material, ATH content and platinum-based flame retardant that influence in flame retardant and tracking characteristic among composite of silicone rubber studied mechanical strength and influence getting to electrical properties. Composition of ${\alpha}$, ${\omega}-vinyl$ poly (dimethyl-methylphenyl) siloxane(VPMPS) of a polymer quantity made doing mole of D4, $D3^{Me,Ph}$ and VMS by 1000:15:0.2 mole ratio and uses basic catalyst tetramethylammonium silanolate(TMAS) and do opening equilibrium polymerization to be used to main polymer for high voltage insulation insulator. Control ATH content and content of platinum-based flame retardant and made high voltage insulation silicone rubber. Measured mechanical strength of making silicone rubber using UTM, and tracking characteristic according to standard of IEC 60587, flame retardant test studied effect that flame retardant characteristic gets in tracking characteristic, measuring according to UL94V method of test.

In this paper, various kinds of epoxy-based nanocomposites were made, and the AC breakdown strengths of Nano filler and micro-$SiO_2$ filler mixtures of epoxy-based composites were analyzed using sphere-to-sphere electrodes. Moreover, nano- and microfiller combinations were investigated as an approach to practical application of nanocomposite insulation materials. Its composition ratio was 100 (resin):82 (hardener):1.5 (accelerator). AC breakdown tests were performed at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$ in the vicinity of $T_g$ ($90^{\circ}C$). Thermal conductivity was measured using TC-30.

Assessment of steel structures designed for progressive collapse under localized fires

  • Structural design against the progressive collapse has been a vital necessity for decades due to occasional tragic events. The question of whether designed structures against the progressive collapse are still robust if subjected to multi-hazard scenarios containing column removal and successive localized fires is ad-dressed in the current study. Two seven-story steel structures with an identical area but different structural configurations of 4- and 5-bays are designed against the progressive collapse; the structural components are also fireproofed for a 60 min fire resistance. The structures are then subjected to different column re-moval scenarios over different stories followed immediately by localized fires. Results indicate that the structures are not able to keep their stability under all of the considered scenarios; the 4-bay structure is more vulnerable than the 5-bay structure. It is also indicated that upper stories are more sensitive toward the considered scenarios than lower stories. To advance structural safety, two strategies are adopted: in-creasing the thickness of the insulation materials to reduce the thermal effects, or, increasing the safety fac-tor (ΩN) of the structures when designing against the progressive collapse. As for the first strategy, provid-ing a 35% and a 25% increase in the insulation thicknesses of the structural components of the 4-bay and 5-bay structures, respectively, can prevent a progressive collapse to trigger. As for the second strategy, in-creasing ΩN by 10% can enhance the structural integrity to where no collapse occurs under all of the sce-narios.

A Study on Erosion Structure Properties for Thermal Insulation Materials on Carbon-Carbon Composites and Graphite Nozzle Throat (C-C 복합재료와 Graphite 노즐목 내열재의 침식조직 특성에 대한 연구)

  • The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

Comparison on the fire performance of additional insulation materials for improving the fire retardancy in engine-room of FRP vessel (FRP 선박 기관실 난연성 향상을 위한 추가 방열재의 화재성능비교)

  • To prevent the flame spread in FRP vessel in fire, the engine-room of the vessel should be constructed additionally with laminated fire-retardant resin over 3 times or equivalent insulation materials to former according to the relevant standard for FRP vessel structure. It is surveyed that insulation materials called 'Gel coat' are widely used in FRP fishing vessel, however, test method and its criteria for Gel coat are not clearly establish and have not been evaluated yet, while test method and criteria for fire-retardant resin and fire-retardant polyurethane composite are described in test standard for type-approval. In this study, 3 fire-retardant resins, 4 gel coats, 1 flame-retardant paint and 1 polyurethane composite were selected based on the survey and were evaluated according to both IMO FTP Code part 5 and flame-retardant test. When comparing based on CFE values from flame-spread test, average value for 4 gel coats were lower than that of 3 fire-retardant resins. As for flame-retardant test, there were no significant differences between fire-retardant resin and gel coat, based on charred area.

Strength Assessment of LNG CCS using Strength Analysis Method for Composite Materials (직교이방성 복합재료의 극저온 재료 물성치를 고려한 LNG CCS의 강도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) cargo containment system(CCS) has the primary function of ensuring both adequate structural safety with respect to sloshing load which is defined as a violent behaviour of the liquid contents in CCS due to external forced motions and thermal insulation keeping natural gas below its boiling point. Among different LNG CCS types such as independent B-type and membrane ones, Mark III CCS is considered in this paper to perform its strength assessment. Mark III CCS plate is designed and constructed by stacking various non-metallic engineering materials such as plywood, triplex, reinforced PU foam that are supported by series of mastic upon inner steel hull structure. From the viewpoint of structural analysis, this plated structure is treated as a laminated composite structure showing complex structural behaviour under external load. Advanced finite element models of Mark III CCS plate is generated and used in conjunction with ultimate strength based failure criteria from laminated composite mechanics for the strength assessment. The strength assessment is performed within the initial failure state of Mark III CCS plate. Results provide failure details such as failure locations and loads. Finally obtained results are reviewed using the loads from acceptance criteria suggested by classification.
