Permeability to gases and vapors is an important function in tires, rubber tubes and diaphragms. It mainly depends on the rubber material. Generally, permeability increases in the following order: silicone rubber > NR > EPDM > SBR > NBR > FPM > ECO > IIR. And, for an elastomer permeability is also very much dependent on compounding. Many research works are reported in the area of gas permeability for formed rubber,$^{1-7}$ however, few studies are found for unformed elastomer products. Incorporation of nano-particles, use of thermoplastic elastomers and applying high barrier multilayer coatings are the main approaches to obtain a high barrier elastomeric product. In this paper, barrier article for vehicle is introduced.
To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acid environments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.

As applications in extreme environments such as aerospace, high-energy plasma and radio-active circumstances increases, the demand for materials that require higher melting points, higher mechanical strength and improved thermal conductivity continues to increase. Accordingly, in order to improve the oxidation/abrasion resistance of the carbon-carbon composite, which is a typical heat-resistant material, a method of using ultra high temperature ceramics was reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of CVD coating, pack cementation and thermal plasma spraying, the simplest methods for synthesizing ultra-high temperature ceramics, were compared. As a method for applying the CVD coating method to C/C composites with complex shapes, the possibility of using thermodynamic calculation and CFD simulation was proposed. In addition, as a result of comparing the oxidation resistance of the TaC/SiC bi-layer coating and TaC/SiC multilayer coating produced by this method, the more excellent oxidation resistance of the multilayer coating on C/C was confirmed.

We investigated the curing properties of cured coatings for a multi-focal UV-LED. The coatings are for LEDs that operate at multiple UV wavelengths, unlike conventional single-wavelength UV-LEDs. Using UV-LED light sources with wavelengths of 365, 395, 420, and 450 nm, we analyzed the optical characteristics such as the direction of light flux and light source. We also analyzed the curing characteristics at each UV-LED wavelength to optimize the LED for composite wavelengths. The curing performance state was predicted through computer simulation for when the multiple wavelengths of UV light sources are superimposed, and then actual LEDs were designed and fabricated. To improve the internal high-speed curing, a multi-spot module was fabricated, in which each LED is condensed, and multiple wavelengths are synthesized and condensed at the same position. The adhesive strength, surface hardness, and internal hardness of the curing agent were tested by varying the wavelength combination conditions. The surface hardening and internal hardening were compared and analyzed using a hardness tester and FT-IR analyzer. As a result, the characteristics of the surface and internal hardness were improved by a multi-spot method in which four wavelengths were overlapped in a UV-LED rather than a single wavelength.
Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.
In this study, the composite coating materials with improved thermal insulation property were prepared by incorporating the hollow micro-spheres with high heat transfer resistance. The UV curable resin system consisting of hexa aliphatic urethane acrylate (UP118), trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), and photoinitiator (Irgacure184) was employed as an organic binder. The glass substrates were coated by the prepared composites via bar coating method and cured under UV radiation. The optical transparency, thermal insulation property, adhesion, and surface hardness of the glass coated with composites containing different type of micro-spheres were investigated. The incorporation of micro-spheres with only 20 vol% of content resulted in remarkable improvement in the thermal insulation property of the coated glass. In addition, the transparent coated glass with light transmittance of about 80% could be obtained when silica micro-sphere (SP) was used as a thermal barrier.
Statement of problem. Luster loss in esthetic anterior ceromer restoration can occur and can be related with rough surface texture. Understanding durability of surface finishing methods like polishing and surface coating have critical importance. Purpose. This study evaluated the effect of tooth brushing and thermal cycling on surface luster of 3 ceromer systems (Artglass, Targis, Sculpture) treated with different surface finishing methods. Material and methods. Seventy-two samples were prepared: 12 for control group Z100, 12 for Artglass, 24 for Targis, and 24 for Sculpture. Half of the Targis and Sculpture were polished according to the manufacturer's recommendation. The rest of the samples were coated with staining and glazing solution for Targis and Sculpture, respectively. All specimens were subjected to 10,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ with 30 seconds dwell time. Tooth brushing abrasion tests were performed in a customized tooth brushing machine with 500g back and forth for 20,000 cycle. Luster comparisons were based on grading after direct observation, and light reflection area was measured with Image analysis software. Results. All materials showed an decrease in luster grade after thermal cycling and tooth brushing. The post-tooth brushing results revealed that the glazed Sculpture had greater mean luster grade than did any other groups. While, the stained Targis group showed greatest changes after tooth brushing (p < 0.05), polished Targis and Sculpture did not show significant changes. However, glazed Sculpture showed discretely fallen out glaze resin. Conclusion. From the results of this study, all of the ceromer specimens were much glossy than control composite group after tooth brushing. coatings used for Targis and Sculpture had not durability for long term use.
Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide) (PEPO) coated carbon fibers was evaluated via microdroplet test and compared with results obtained from carbon fibers coated with poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PES), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700 and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. Interfacial adhesion between thermoplastics and uncoated carbon fibers was also measured in order to understand the adheion mechanism. PEPO coated carbon fibers showed the highest IFSS, followed by PES, Udel and Ultem coated fibers. A similar trend was observed for thermoplastic/uncoated fibers. SEM analysis indicated that only PEPO coated fiber exhibited cohesie failure in the vinylester resin, while others showed failure at or near the interface of polymer coating and vinylester resin. The enhanced interfacial adhesion by PEPO coating could be attributed to the strong interaction of P = 0 moiety to the fiber as well as to the vinylester resin.
PURPOSE. Although several surface treatments have been recently investigated both under in vitro and in vivo conditions, controversy still exists regarding the selection of the most appropriate zirconia surface pre-treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of alumina (Al) and aluminium nitride (AlN) coating on the shear bond strength of adhesive resin cement to zirconia core. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifty zirconia core discs were divided into 5 groups; air particle abrasion with 50 ${\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles ($Al_2O_3$), polishing + Al coating, polishing + AlN coating, air particle abrasion with 50 ${\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ + Al coating and air particle abrasion with 50 ${\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ + AlN coating. Composite resin discs were cemented to each of specimens. Shear bond strength (MPa) was measured using a universal testing machine. The effects of the surface preparations on each specimen were examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The highest bond strengths were obtained by air abrasion with 50 ${\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$, the lowest bond strengths were obtained in polishing + Al coating group (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Al and AlN coatings using the reactive magnetron sputtering technique were found to be ineffective to increase the bond strength of adhesive resin cement to zirconia core.

Nanoparticles are small-scale substances (<100 nm) with unique properties, complex exposure and health risk implications. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) nanoparticles (NP) have been widely used as abrasives, wear-resistant coatings on propeller shafts of ships, to increase the specific impulse per weight of composite propellants used in solid rocket fuel and as drug delivery systems to increase solubility. However, recent studies have shown that nano-sized aluminum (10 nm in diameter) can generate adverse effects, such as pulmonary response. The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of $Al_2O_3$ NP were investigated using the dye exclusion assay, the comet assay, and the mouse lymphoma thymidine kinase (tk$^{+/-}$) gene mutation assay (MLA). IC$_{20}$ values of $Al_2O_3$ NP in BEAS-2B cells were determined the concentration of 273.44 $\mu$g/mL and 390.63 $\mu$g/mL with and without S-9. However IC$_{20}$ values of $Al_2O_3$ NP were found nontoxic in L5178Y cells both of with and without S-9 fraction. In the comet assay, L5178Y cells and BEAS-2B cells were treated with $Al_2O_3$ NP which significantly increased 2-fold tail moment with and without S-9. Also, the mutant frequencies in the $Al_2O_3$ NP treated L5178Y cells were increased compared to the vehicle controls with S-9. The results of this study indicate that $Al_2O_3$ NP can cause primary DNA damage and cytotoxicity but not mutagenicity in cultured mammalian cells.
