  • Applications using 3D models are increasing recently. Since 3D polygonal models are structured by a triangular mesh, the coding of polygonal models in strips of triangles is an efficient way of representing the data. These strips may be very long, and may take a long time to render or transmit. If the triangle strips are partitioned, it may be possible to perform more efficient data transmission in an error-prone environment and to display the 3D model progressively. In this paper, we devised the Component Based Data Partitioning (CODAP) which is based on Topological Surgery (TS). In order to support the error resilience and the progressively build-up rendering, we partition the connectivity, geometry, and properties of a 3D polygonal model. Each partitioned component is independently encoded and resynchronization between partitioned components is done.

  • Spatiotemporal statistical models are used for analyzing space-time data in many fields, such as environmental sciences, meteorology, geology, epidemiology, forestry, hydrology, fishery, and so on. It is well known that classical spatiotemporal process modeling requires the estimation of space-time variogram or covariance functions. In practice, the estimation of such variogram or covariance functions are computationally difficult and highly sensitive to data structures. We investigate a Bayesian hierarchical model which allows the specification of a more realistic series of conditional distributions instead of computationally difficult and less realistic joint covariance functions. The spatiotemporal model investigated in this study allows both spatial component and autoregressive temporal component. These two features overcome the inability of pure time series models to adequately predict changes in trends in individual sites.

  • We investigate pediatric tumor incidence data collected by the Florida Association for Pediatric Tumor program using various models commonly used in disease mapping analysis. Particularly, we consider Poisson normal models with various conditional autoregressive structure for spatial dependence, a zero-in ated component to capture excess zero counts and a spatio-temporal model to capture spatial and temporal dependence, together. We found that intrinsic conditional autoregressive model provides the smallest Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) among the models when only spatial dependence is considered. On the other hand, adding an autoregressive structure over time decreases DIC over the model without time dependence component. We adopt weighted ranks squared error loss to identify high risk regions which provides similar results with other researchers who have worked on the same data set (e.g. Zhang et al., 2014; Wang and Rodriguez, 2014). Our results, thus, provide additional statistical support on those identied high risk regions discovered by the other researchers.

  • The extraction of face regions is required for Head Gesture Interface which is a natural user interface. Recently, many researchers are interested in using color information to detect face regions in image sequences. Two most widely used color models, HSI color model and YIQ color model, were selected for this study. Actually H-component of HSI and I-component of YIQ are used in this research. Given the difference in the color component, this study was aimed to compare the performance of face region detection between the two models. First, we search the optimum range of facial color for each color component, examining the detection accuracy of facial color regions for variant threshold range about facial color. And then, we compare the accuracy of the face box for both color models by using optimal facial color and motion information. As a result, a range of $0^{\circ}{\sim}14^{\circ}$ in the H-component and a range of $-22^{\circ}{\sim}-2^{\circ}$ in the I-component appeared to be the most optimum range for extracting face regions. When the optimal facial color range is used, I-component is better than H-component by about 10% in accuracy to extract face regions. While optimal facial color and motion information are both used, I-component is also better by about 3% in accuracy to extract face regions.

  • We improved the MLLR speaker adaptation algorithm with reduction of the order of HMM parameters using PCA(Principle Component Analysis) or ICA(Independent Component Analysis). To find a smaller set of variables with less redundancy, we adapt PCA(principal component analysis) and ICA(independent component analysis) that would give as good a representation as possible, minimize the correlations between data elements, and remove the axis with less covariance or higher-order statistical independencies. Ordinary MLLR algorithm needs more than 30 seconds adaptation data to represent higher word recognition rate of SD(Speaker Dependent) models than of SI(Speaker Independent) models, whereas proposed algorithm needs just more than 10 seconds adaptation data. 10 components for ICA and PCA represent similar performance with 36 components for ordinary MLLR framework. So, compared with ordinary MLLR algorithm, the amount of total computation requested in speaker adaptation is reduced by about 1/167 in proposed MLLR algorithm.

  • Recent studies have dealt with brake squeal in terms of the coupled vibration of brake component parts. In this paper, we assemble the mode models derived from FE analysis of the individual components of the drum brake system into the system model by considering the friction interaction of the lining and drum at the interface. The validity of the component models are backed up by the experimental confirmation work. By scrutinizing the real parts of the complex eigen-values of the system, the unstable modes, which may be strong candidate sources of squeal noise, are identified. Mode participation factors are calculated to examine the modal coupling mechanism. The model predictions for the unstable frequencies pointed well the actual squeal noise frequencies measured through field test. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to identify parametric dependency trend of the unstable modes, which would indicate the direction for the squeal noise reduction design. Finally, reduction of the squeal noise tendency through shape modification is tried.

  • This study presents a cost of efforts estimation model under the environment of developing a software using component software package tools. The approach taken was to drive from variety of sources in an attempt to identify the most significant factors. These sources ranged from already existing cost models like COTS integration cost and COCOMO models to information gathered in a data collection survey. Once the candidate drivers had been identified, the next step was to interview with the experts who had been experienced more than 5 years in component development area to identify the most significant driving factors. From those selected drivers, I established the Cost Estimation Model which is suitable for the developing a software using component software package tools by applying the general from of the well-know COCOMO software cost estimation model. To established the best fit in Korean Software industry, I used Regression statistical analysis with 31 data collections.

  • The adsorption capacity of bone char for lead, cadmium and zinc was studied in both single and binary multiple component systems. Equilibrium experimental studies have been performed to determine the sorption capacity of bone char for each metal ion. These have been analysed using single and multi-component equilibrum models. The results show that the sorption of metal ions for multi-component systems can be predicted reasonably well from the IAS theory with the Langmuir equation, the Freundlich and the Slip equation for metal ions.

  • The method of substructure synthesis o. component mode synthesis(CMS) provides an effective means of dynamic analysis of very large and/or complex structures. In this study, residual dynamic flexibility attachment modes in hybrid component mode synthesis are considered for the purpose of exactly compensating the effect of higher order truncated modes. Following this way, the analysis accuracy of the synthesized structure can be improved effectively with less computational effort. In order to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid component mode synthesis(HCMS), numerical experiments were carried out for the models of a clamped-clamped beam. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • A reliability approach to evaluate structural performance has gained increased acceptability and usage over the past two decades. Most reliability analyses are based on the reliability of an individual component without examining the entire structural system. These analyses often result in either unnecessary repairs or unsafe structures. This study uses examples of series, parallel, and series-parallel models of structural systems to illustrate how the component reliabilities affect the reliability of the entire system. The component-system reliability interaction can be used to develop optimum lifetime inspection and repair strategies for structural systems. These examples demonstrate that such strategies must be based on the reliability of the entire structural system. They also demonstrate that the location of an individual component in the system has a profound effect on the acceptable reliability of that component. Furthermore, when a structure is deteriorating over time, the reliability importance of various components is a1so changing with time. For this reason, the most critical component in the early life of the structure may not tie the most critical later.
