Characteristics of In-cylinder Steady Flow using PIV for Different Intake Port Geometries in a 4-valve Gasoline Engine (PIV에 의한 4밸브 가솔린기관의 흡기포트 형상에 따른 정상유동 해석)

  • Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow characteristics and found the effect of intake port geometries on engine performance. The flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady flow rig for different intake ports. Tumble intensity of intake configurations with different entry angles were quantified with a tumble meter. The velocity and angular momentum distributions in the tumble adaptor were measured under steady conditions with PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). We have obtained the results that flow structure becomes complicated by valve interference at low valve lift. As the valve interferences were reducing and the flow pattern changed to large vortex structure with tumble direction, intake ports with different entry angles have different tumble centers. Tumble eccentricity of intake port with low entry angle was large, so that the port had relatively much angular momentum compared to others which was expected to improve combustion performance.

  • The EGR is needed fur one of various strategies to reduce NOx emission. But to get the proper EGR rate, the intake and exhaust system become complicated. That is a reason why we consider using the internal EGR system. The internal EGR is a system which reduces NOx by controling the residual gas fraction in cylinder by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust. In this paper, characteristics of volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction in cylinder were investigated for various engine speeds by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust in the 4 stroke-cycle diesel engine. Volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction were calculated by the method of characteristics. As the results, residual gas fraction and volumetric efficiency in cylinder by variable valve timing were visualized.

Analysis of Soot Formation Characteristics in Diffusion Flames with Soot Particle Temperature Measurement (매연입자 온도 측정에의한 확산화염의 매연생성 특성 해석)

  • Soot particle temperatures in co-flow diffusion flames have been measured using a two-color pyrometry at the pressure of 0.2 MPa(2 atm). The measured soot particle temperatures along with the integrated soot volume fractions are analyzed to understand soot formation characteristics. At 0.2 MPa, the addition of small amount of air into ethylene do not change the soot particle temperature in soot formation regions. This result showed that the increase of soot formation with addition of air is mostly due to the chemical effect of the added air, such as the increased role of C3 chemistry during the early stage of soot inception process. The addition of sufficient air into ethylene, however, changes soot particle temperatures and the understanding of soot formation characteristics becomes complicated. Measured soot particle temperatures also showed that there is no significant temperature effect for the synergistic effect of ethylene/propane mixture on soot formation.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. Experiments are performed to find flow characteristics of supersonic turbine with the cascade positions and to find factor of expansion loss. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested with the cascade positions. Firstly, the flow was visualized by Z-type Schlieren system. Finally, highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine were observed.

  • Corestone ground mass has complicated characteristics as it is made up of hard and stiff corestone in a relatively weak and soft matrix. Model corestone ground mass which is physically identical with the stiff corestone in weak matrix were tested in uniaxial compression. The tests show that the increase of the corestone proportion brought the gradual increase of the elastic modulus as well. The ground mass was weaker when the corestone proportion was low while it was stronger in higher corestone proportion. The size of the corestone had no influence on the strength and elastic modulus as long as the proportion of the corestone remains same.

  • According to the increase of electric consumption nowadays, power system becomes complicated. Due to this, the size of single line-to-ground fault from power system also increases to have many problems. In order to resolve these problems effectively, an Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) was proposed and continuous study has been done. In this paper, an SFCL was combined to the neutral line of a transformer. An superconductivity has the characteristics of zero resistance below critical temperature. because of this, SFCL has nearly zero resistance. so we connecting SFCL to neutral line will not only have any loss in the normal operation but also have the less burden of electric power because of only limiting the initial fault current. We analyzed the characteristics of current, voltage according to the changes of turn ratio of 3 phase system in case of combinations of an SFCL to the neutral line. It was confirmed that the limiting rate of initial fault current by the increase of turn ratio was reduced.

  • The solar cell has an optimum operating point to be able to get maximum power. To obtain maximum power from Photovoltaic array, potovolt aic power syste usually requres maximum power point tracking controller. The output characteristics of solar cell are nonlinear, and these characteristics vary with load solar insolation, solar cell temperature. Therefore the tracking control of maximum power point is the complicated problem.   • The purpose of this study was to analyze the formative characteristics appeared in modem Kitsch fashion which has been shown through the empirical data photogrphes from the 2000's to 2003 and the formative characteristics of Kitsch were divided into the material, ornament, color, pattern to understand the modem Kitsch fashion. The findings of this study could be summarized as follows: First, the modem Kitsch fashion in the material was used cheap, counterfeit materials like vinyl, artificial leather, immitation fur, beads and non-artistic materials like metal, plastic, paper and voluptuous material like seethrough to express eroticism and superficiality as the characteristic of Kitsch. Second, Kitsch fashion in the ornament was shown over-decoration by using the various accessories like bracelet, metal belt, gloves, etc to express as childish and coarse mixtures as the characteristic of Kitsch. Third, the modem Kitsch fashion was using splendid and bright, primary colors to express the image of complicated accumulation. Fourth, the modern Kitsch fashion mainly in the pattern was using ethnic, folklore and pop art pattern or print used hippies and pop art fashion to express the primitive purity as bounding of civilized society.

  • The general cooling tower is a device for making a cooling water in refrigerant condensers or industrial process heat exchangers. The present cooling tower have defects with noises, complicated structure and environmental problems. In this paper, we constituted a new water cooling system by using a evaporating latent heat in an enclosed tank, and this system is consisted of an enclosed vacuum tank and water driving ejector system. Several experimental cases were carried out for improvement methods of high vacuum pressure and water cooling characteristics. The ejector performance was tested in case of water temperature variations that flows in the ejector. Based on the vacuum pressure by water driving ejector, the water cooling characteristics were investigated for the vaporized air condensing effects.

A Study on the Characteristics of Steering Angle Sensor using Magnetic Induction (자기유도를 이용한 조향각 센서의 특성 연구)

  • We have development the steering angle sensor using not only detecting parts but also integrating technique with semiconductors for automobile applications. The performance design and analysis of the steering angle sensor for intelligent vehicles is complicated due to variety of parameters. In this study, the performance characteristics of the angle sensor were analyzed using test rig. By means of magnetic induction technique, these new the steering angle sensors showed excellent magnetic characteristics. The detection range of steering angle sensor obtained was ${\pm}800^{\circ}$, the maximum non-linearity is 0.744% Full Span and the temperature range was $-40^{\circ}C{\sim}+125^{\circ}C$. With this conclusive, the inductive angle sensor was quite satisfactory for many applications in intelligent vehicles.
