Excitation and propagation of electromagnetic field of a cylindrical coil above an arbitrary number of conductive plates for pulsed eddy current testing(PECT) are very complex problems due to their complicated physical properties. In this paper, analytical modeling of PECT is established by Fourier series based on truncated region eigenfunction expansion(TREE) method for a single air-cored coil above stratified conductive structures(SCS) to investigate their integrity. From the presented expression of PECT, the coil impedance due to SCS is calculated based on analytical approach using the generalized reflection coefficient in series form. Then the multilayered structures manufactured by non-ferromagnetic (STS301L) and ferromagnetic materials (SS400) are investigated by the developed PECT model. Good prediction of analytical model of PECT not only contributes to the development of an efficient solver but also can be applied to optimize the conditions of experimental setup in PECT.

G protein-coupled receptor(GPCR) family is a cell membrane protein, and plays an important role in a signaling mechanism which transmits external signals through cell membranes into cells. Now, it is estimated that there may be about 800-1000 GPCRs in a human genome. But, GPCRs each are known to have various complex control mechanisms and very unique signaling mechanisms. GPCRs are involved in maintaining homeostasis of various human systems including an endocrine system or a neural system and thus, disorders in activity control of GPCRs are thought to be the major source of cardiovascular disorders, metabolic disorders, degenerative disorders, carcinogenesis and the like. As more than 60% of currently marketed therapeutic agents target GPCRs, the GPCR field has been actively explored in the pharmaceutical industry. Structural features, and class and subfamily of GPCRs are well known by function, and accordingly, the most fundamental work in studies identifying the previous GPCRs is to classify the GPCRs with given protein sequences. Studies for classifying previously identified GPCRs more easily with mathematical models have been mainly going on. Considering that secondary sequences of proteins, namely, secondary binding structures of amino acids constituting proteins are closely related to functions, the present paper does not place the focus on primary sequences of proteins as previously practiced, but instead, proposes a method to transform primary sequences into secondary structures and compare the secondary structures, and then detect an unknown GPCR assumed to have a same function in databases of previously identified GPCRs.
This paper reports experimental findings about the duration feature of the acoustic components of English stops in Korean speakers' voicing perception. In our experiment, 35 participants discriminated between recorded stimuli and digitally transformed stimuli with different duration features from the original stimuli. 72 sets of paired stimuli are generated to test the effects of the duration feature in various phonetic contexts. The result of our experiment is a complicated cross-tabulation with 540 cells defined by five categorical independent variables plus one response variable. To find a meaningful generalization out of this complex frequency table, we ran logit log-linear regression analyses. Surprisingly, we have found that there is no single effect of the duration feature in all phonetic contexts on Korean speakers' perception of the voicing contrasts of English stops. Instead, the logit log-linear analyses reveal that there are interaction effects among phonetic contexts (=C), the places of articulation of stops (=P), and the voicing contrast (=V), and among duration (=T), phonetic contexts, and the places of articulation. To put it in mathematical terms, the distribution of the data can be explained by a simple log-linear equation, logF=${\mu}+{\lambda}CPV+{\lambda}TCP$.

As a continuation of a previous work by Park et al. (2006), we have developed a two-element radio interferometer that can measure both the phase and amplitude of a visibility function. Two small radio telescopes with diameters of 2.3 m are used as before, but this time an external reference oscillator is shared by the two telescopes so that the local oscillator frequencies are identical. We do not use a hardware correlator; instead we record signals from the two telescopes onto a PC and then perform software correlation. Complex visibilities are obtained toward the sun at ${\lambda}\;=\;21\;cm$, for 24 baselines with the use of the earth rotation and positional changes of one element, where the maximum baseline length projected onto UV plane is ${\sim}\;90{\lambda}$. As expected, the visibility amplitude decreases with the baseline length, while the phase is almost constant. The image obtained by the Fourier transformation of the visibility function nicely delineates the sun, which is barely resolved due to the limited baseline length. The experiment demonstrates that this system can be used as a "toy" interferometer at least for the education of (under)graduate students.
It is very important to detect and identify small anomalies and component failures for the safe operation of complex and large-scale artifacts such as nuclear power plants. Each diagnostic technique has its own advantages and limitations. These facts inspire us not only to enhance the capability of diagnostic techniques but also to integrate the results of diagnostic subsystems in order to obtain more accurate diagnostic results. The article describes the outline of four diagnostic techniques developed for the condition monitoring of the fast breeder reactor "Monju". The techniques are (1) estimation technique of important state variables based on a physical model of the component, (2) a state identification technique by non-linear discrimination function applying SVM (Support Vector Machine), (3) a diagnostic technique applying WT (Wavelet Transformation) to detect changes in the characteristics of measurement signals, and (4) a state identification technique effectively using past cases. In addition, a hybrid diagnostic system in which a final diagnostic result is given by integrating the results from subsystems is introduced, where two sets of values called confidence values and trust values are used. A technique to determine the trust value is investigated under the condition that the confidence value is determined by each subsystem.

The first reduction peak of the cyclic voltammogram (CV) for sulfur reduction in dimethyl sulfoxide has been studied using time resolved Fourier transform electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (FTEIS) analysis of small potential step chronoamperometric currents. The FTEIS analysis results reveal that the impedance signals obtained during short potential steps can be resolved into electron transfer reactions of two different time constants in a high frequency region. The FTEIS method provides snap shots of impedance profiles during an earlier phase of the reaction, leading to time resolved EIS measurements. Our results obtained by the FTEIS analysis are consistent with a series of electron transfer and chemical equilibrium steps of a complex reaction, making up an ECE (electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical) mechanism postulated from the results of computer simulation.
There is still large uncertainty in estimating aerosol indirect effect despite ever-escalating efforts and virtually exponential increase in published studies concerning aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (CAPI). Probably most uncertainty comes from a wide range of observational scales and different platforms inappropriately used, and inherent complex chains of CAPI. Therefore, well-designed field campaigns and data analysis are required to address how to attribute aerosol signals along with clouds and precipitation to the microphysical effects of aerosols. Basically, aerosol influences cloud properties at the microphysical scales, "process scale", but observations are generally made of bulk properties over a various range of temporal and spatial resolutions, "analysis scale" (McComiskey & Feingold, 2012). In the most studies, measures made within the wide range of scales are erroneously treated as equivalent, probably resulting in a large uncertainty in associated with CAPI. Therefore, issues associated with the disparities of the observational resolution particular to CAPI are briefly discussed. In addition, the dependence of CAPI on the cloud environment such as stability and adiabaticity, and observation characteristics with varying situations of CAPI are also addressed together with observation framework optimally designed for the Korean situation. Properly designed and observation-based CAPI studies will likely continue to accumulate new evidences of CAPI, to further help understand its fundamental mechanism, and finally to develop improved parameterization for cloud-resolving models and large scale models.
Dendritic cells (DCs) play a critical role in various immune responses involving $CD4^+$ T cells and have been used to generate anti-tumor immunity. Chemotherapy induces severe side effects including immunosuppression in patients with cancer. Although immunosuppression has been studied, the effects of anticancer drugs on DCs are not fully determined. In this study, we demonstrated that CD40 activation strongly protected DCs from 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or mitomycin C-induced apoptosis. DCspecific surface markers, including CD11c and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, were used for identifying DCs. CD 40 activation with anti-CD40 mAb significantly enhanced the viability of DCs treated with 5-FU or mitomycin C, assayed by MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide). Fluorescence staining and analysis clearly confirmed the enhancing effect of anti-CD40 mAb on the viability of DCs, suggesting that CD40 activation may transduce critical signals for the viability of DCs. Annexin V staining assay showed that CD40 significantly protected DCs from 5-FU or mitomycin C-induced apoptosis. Taken together, this study shows that CD40 activation with anti-CD40 mAb has strong anti-apoptosis effect on DCs, suggesting that CD40 activation may overcome the immunosuppression, especially downregulation of number and function of DCs in chemotherapy-treated cancer patients.

Shiga toxins (Stxs) produced by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are major virulence factors that cause fatal systemic complications, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome and disruption of the central nervous system. Although numerous studies report proinflammatory responses to Stx type 1 (Stx1) or Stx type 2 (Stx2) both in vivo and in vitro, none have examined dynamic immune regulation involving cytokines and/or unknown inflammatory mediators during intoxication. Here, we showed that enzymatically active Stxs trigger the dissociation of lysyl-tRNA synthetase (KRS) from the multi-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex in human macrophage-like differentiated THP-1 cells and its subsequent secretion. The secreted KRS acted to increase the production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Thus, KRS may be one of the key factors that mediate transduction of inflammatory signals in the STEC-infected host.
