  • An engineering estimation equation for the crack opening displacement (COD) is proposed for a complex cracked pipe, based on the reference stress approach. To define the reference stress, a simple plastic limit load analysis for the complex cracked pipe subjected to combined bending and tension is performed considering the crack closure effect in the compressive-stressed region. Comparison with ten published test data and the results from existing method shows that the present method not only reduces non-conservatism associated with the existing method, but also provides consistent and overall satisfactory results.

  • The role of SPOP in the ubiquitination of $ER{\alpha}$ by the Cullin3-based E3 ubiquitin ligase complex was investigated. We showed that the N-terminal region of SPOP containing the MATH domain interacts with the AF-2 domain of $ER{\alpha}$ in cultured human embryonic 293 cells. SPOP was required for coimmunoprecipitation of $ER{\alpha}$ with Cullin3. This is the first report of the essential role of SPOP in $ER{\alpha}$ ubiquitination by the Cullin3-based E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. We also demonstrated repression of the transactivation capability of $ER{\alpha}$ in cultured mammalian cells.

  • This study assesses the dispersion and emission rates of odor form industrial area source. CALPUFF and AERMOD Gaussian models were used for predicting downwind odor concentration and calculating odor emission rates. The studied region was Seobu industrial complex in Korea. Odor samples were collected five days over a year period in 2006. In-site meteorological data (wind direction and wind speed) were used to predict concentration. The BOOT statistical examination software was used to analyze the data. Comparison between the predicted and field sampled downwind concentration using BOOT analysis indicates that the CALPUFF model prediction is a little better than AERMOD prediction for average downwind odor concentrations. Predicted concentrations of AERMOD model have a little larger scatter than that of CALPUFF model. The results also show odor emission rates of Seobu industrial complex area were an order of 10 smaller than that of beef cattle feed lots.

  • The Substructural Synthesis Method is effectively used for the calculation of complex structures. An alternative substructural synthesis, using spatial properities which can be directly inedtified from the frequency reponse function, was proposed. It has been shown that the rotational degree of freedom in the coupled region should be required to synthesize the substructures and the residual effect in the rotational degree of freedom should be considered. Through the simulations and experiments, this alternative was proven to be useful for the dynamic analysis of complex structures.

  • Some ir absorbing nickel complex dyes were synthesized by the reaction of phenylene diamines, 2-aminobenzenethiols and 2-aminobenzene selenols, tetrathiols with nickel (II) chloride. These dyes absorbed ir light, but those from phenylene diamines absorbed at 780-800 nm which is the most favorable wavelength region for semiconductor laser optical recording dye medium.

  • The flow around a ship is complex, especially, at the stern region of a full ship, where highly curved streamlines, hook-shaped iso-velocity contours, and strong secondary flow exist. To resolve this complex flow, an Algebraic Stress Model(ASM) is applied. The calculations are performed for the HSVA Tanker. The results are improved comparing with those of standard k-ε turbulence model, but still show a little difference from the experiments.

  • Three-dimensional imaging and manipulation of CT data are becoming increasingly important for deterRing the complex structure and pathologies. Octree which is a hierarchical data model is used to reconstruct three- dimensional objects from CT scans. Orthogonal cross sections are displayed by traverse the octree partially. Arbitrary oblique planes are derived by intersecting the square region of plane and cubic volume of octal node. Thia method enables the display of multi-structured complex organ ann the realization by personal computer.

  • Background and Objectives Cochlear dead region (CDR) is a region in the cochlear where hearing loss has occurred due to damage to the inner hair cells and/or neurons. Recently, a subjective test involving a pure-tone test in the presence of threshold-equalizing noise (TEN) was introduced to identify CDR. However, for uncooperative patients, such a subjective method would be unsuitable and objective methods would be needed instead to detect CDR. The acoustic change complex (ACC) is an evoked potential elicited by changes in the ongoing sound. In this study, we developed an objective method of identifying CDR by combining ACC response with a TEN test, namely the TEN-ACC test, and investigated its feasibility in normal-hearing listeners. Subjects and Method Ten normal-hearing subjects participated in this study. All subjects underwent both behavioral TEN test and electrophysiological TEN-ACC test. The stimuli for the TEN-ACC test consisted of TEN and embedded pure tones with different frequencies/signals to noise ratios (SNRs). To identify the thresholds, the range SNR of stimulation was varied from 0 to 20 dB, in stages of 4 dB. Results The ACC responses of all subjects who participated in this study were well elicited by stimuli developed for the TEN-ACC test. We confirm that the pure-tones embedded in TEN elicited the objective ACC response. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that the novel TEN-ACC test can be applied to evoke ACC in normal-hearing listeners. Future research should incorporate hearing-impaired listeners to determine the feasibility of the TEN-ACC test as an objective method to identify CDR.

  • In this paper a method for detecting and extracting the face from the image in YCbCr spaceis proposed. The face region is obtained from the complex original image by using the difference method and the face color information is taken from the reduced face region throughthe Ellipse clustering method. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can efficiently detect and extract the face from the original image under the general light intensity except for low luminance.
