The recent H.264/AVC video coding standard provides a higher coding efficiency than previous standards. H.264/AVC achieves a bit rate saving of more than 50 % with many new technologies, but it is computationally complex. Most of fast mode decision algorithms have focused on Baseline profile of H.264/AVC. In this paper, a fast block mode decision scheme for P- slices in High profile is proposed to reduce the computational complexity for H.264/AVC because the High profile is useful for broadcasting and storage applications. To reduce the block mode decision complexity in P- pictures of High profile, we use the SAD value after $16{\times}16$ block motion estimation. This SAD value is used for the classification feature to divide all block modes into some proper candidate block modes. The proposed algorithm shows average speed-up factors of 47.42 ${\sim}$ 67.04% for IPPP sequences.

The current tendency toward light weight and fast machines has lead to a need to suppress vibration of flexible dynamic systems. Input shaping is an efficient tool to eliminate transient and residual vibration caused by motion of these systems. This paper proposes a new formulation of the design method for multi-mode input shapers to eliminate residual vibration in flexible dynamic systems. The essence of the proposed method is to minimize the number of impulses to be n+1 for n-mode input shapers. This paper also suggests a solution procedure to solve the complex-valued nonlinear matrix equation for the input shapers. The proposed method is applied to two-mode input shapers. This paper discusses characteristics of several input shapers obtained under the same condition. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed method is very useful for designing multi-mode input shapers.

Upper wall-lower frame(complex building) can be divided into three partition, namely, upper wall, lower frame, and transfer system which link two partitions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the elasto-plastic response characteristics of structures with variation in the stories of lower frame of complex buildings. The conclusions of this study was following; 1) In the push-over analysis for vertically irregular building, the distribution of lateral forces is judged which consider the effects of higher mode. 2) In proportion as the stories of lower frame increase inter-story displacement of lower frame increased, but that of upper wall decreased. 3) The appearance of yielding hinge with variations in the lower stories of complex buildings differed in lower frame of each model, but was almost the same in upper wall.
Thrombin binding aptamter (TBA-15) is a 15-mer guanine-rich oligonucleotide. This DNA apamer specifically binds to the thrombin protein involved in blood coagulation. Using extensive umbrella sampling molecular dynamics simulation method at all atom level, we investigated the potential of mean force (PMF) upon pulling the DNA aptamer from the binding mode of aptamer/thrombin complex. From this calculation, the free energy cost for a full dissociation of this aptamer/protein complex is 17 kcal/mol, indicating a substantial binding affinity of TBA-15. Interestingly, this PMF reveals noticeable plateau regions along the pulling coordinate. Possible structural changes of this complex in the plateau were investigated in details.
The modified power method has been studied by many researchers to calculate the higher eigenmodes and accelerate the convergence of the fundamental mode. Its application to multidimensional problems may be unstable due to degenerated or near-degenerated eigenmodes. Complex eigenmode solutions are occasionally encountered in such cases, and the shapes of the corresponding eigenvectors may change during the simulation. These issues must be addressed for the successful implementation of the modified power method. Complex components are examined and an approximation method to eliminate the usage of the complex numbers is provided. A technique to fix the eigenvector shapes is also provided. The performance of the methods for dealing with those aforementioned problems is demonstrated with two dimensional one group and three dimensional one group homogeneous diffusion problems.
We investigated the initial growth mode of Cu deposited on polyimide at high temperature($350^{\circ}C$) using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We could find that when Cu is sputter-deposited on the polyimide at high temperature, Cu-C-N complex is formed first, Cu-N-O complex and Cu-oxide are mainly formed successively, and then funally metallic Cu grows. In the chemical reaction point of view, the interface of Cu/polyimide at high temperature is than that at room temperature.

We analyze the self-pulsation(SP) characteristics due to mode beating of two modes emitted in a multi-section complex-coupled (CC) DFB laser composed of two DFB sections and a phase control section between them. SP frequency due to mode beating of the two modes is determined by the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions. As the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions increases, the SP frequency increases from very low frequency to the THz region. In the case of a mode which is not located in the stop band of the other DFB region, the mode propagates into the other DFB region without a high reflection, so that output powers emitted in a multi-section CC DFB laser have high modulation indexes due to the large interaction between the two modes.
One of the most effective countermeasures for mitigating cable vibration is to install mechanical dampers near the anchorage of the cable. Most of the dampers used in the field are so-called passive dampers where their parameters cannot be changed once designed. The parameters of passive dampers are usually determined based on the optimal damper force obtained from the universal design curve for linear dampers, which will provide a maximum additional damping for the cable. As the optimal damper force is chosen based on a predetermined principal vibration mode, passive dampers will be most effective if cable undergoes single-mode vibration where the vibration mode is the same as the principal mode used in the design. However, in the actual engineering practice, multi-mode vibrations are often observed for cables. Therefore, it is desirable to have dampers that can suppress different modes of cable vibrations simultaneously. In this paper, MR dampers are proposed for controlling multi-mode cable vibrations, because of its ability to change parameters and its adaptability of active control without inquiring large power resources. Although the highly nonlinear feature of the MR material leads to a relatively complex representation of its mathematical model, effective control strategies can still be derived for suppressing multi-mode cable vibrations based on nonlinear modelling, as proposed in this paper. Firstly, the nonlinear Bouc-wen model is employed to accurately portray the salient characteristics of the MR damper. Then, the desired optimal damper force is determined from the universal design curve of friction dampers. Finally, the input voltage (current) of MR damper corresponding to the desired optimal damper force is calculated from the nonlinear Bouc-wen model of the damper using a piecewise linear interpolation scheme. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm for mitigating multi-mode cable vibrations induced by different external excitations.

Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV)-I flight test data and the modified 1-dimensional steady state modeling data from the critical design results of the KSLV-II liquid oxygen filling system operation are compared to validate the reliability of critical design modeling. A comparison of major flow rates and pressure values between test data and calculation results are conducted. The relative errors relative to maximum total flow rate for each cooling, filling, and replenishment mode are determined within 6.7%. Calculated pressure values at the outlet of the pump and the inlet of flow control valves are within 5.1%. The pressure at the inlet of the launch vehicle for each operation mode are within the measured pressure range.
We investigated complex damped modes in beams in the presence of a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between two elastic layers. The problem was solved using two approaches, (1) Rayleigh beam theory and analyzed using the Ritz method, and (2) by using 2D plane stress elasticity based finite-element method. The damping in the layers was modeled using the complex modulus. Simply-supported, cantilever, and viscously supported boundary conditions were considered in this study. Simple trigonometric functions were used as admissible functions in the Ritz method. The key idea behind sandwich structure is to increase damping in a beam as affected by the presence of a highly-damped core layer vibrating mainly in shear. Different assumptions are utilized in the literature, to model shear deformation in the core layer. In this manuscript, we used FEM without any kinematic assumptions for the transverse shear in both the core and elastic layers. Moreover, numerical examples were studied, where the base and constraining layers were also damped. The loss factor was calculated by modal strain energy method, and by solving a complex eigenvalue problem. The efficiency of the modal strain energy method was tested for different loss factors in the core layer. Complex mode shapes of the beam were also examined in the study, and a comparison was made between viscoelastically and viscously damped structures. The numerical results were compared with those available in the literature, and the results were found to be satisfactory.
