Geochemistry of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag Deposits from the Euiseong Mineralized Area (의성 광화대 동-연-아연-은 광상의 지화학적 연구)

  • The Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag hydrothermal vein type deposits which comprise the Dongil and Dong-cheogogsan mines occur within the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Euiseong Basin of the southern Korean peninsula. The ore mineralization is contained within three stage(I,II and III) quartz and calcite veins. Ore minerals occur as dominant chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite and Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts. Stage I ore minerals were deposited between $400^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ from the fluid with moderate salinities(7.0 to 4.5 eq. wt. % NaCl). Evidence of boiling suggests pressure of less than 150 bars during stage I mineralization. This pressure corresponds to maximum depths of 650 m and 1700 m, respectively, assuming lithostatic and hydrostatic loads. The data on mineralogy, temperature and salinity, together with information on the solubility of Cu complex, suggest that Cu deposition is a result of boiling coupled with declining temperature from $350^{\circ}$ to $250^{\circ}C$ or declining log $a_{o_2}$(from -29.8 to -35.9 atm.)and increasing in pH. Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts were deposited by cooling and dilution at temperature of less than $250^{\circ}C$ from the ore fluid with less than -35.9 atm. of log $a_{o_2}$.

Mechanisms and processes leading to reverse zoning in the Andong granitoid pluton, Andong batholith, Korea

  • The Andong batholith is a Jurassic plutonic complex intruding metamorphic rocks of the RRyeongnam massif that extends from NE to SW in the southern Korean Peninsula. Detailed mapping and petrographic studies show that the batholith exhibits five sparate plutons: Andong, Dosan, Pungsan, Imha, and Nokjeon. The oldest Andong pluton among them exhibits reverse zoning. This feature contrasts with typical modal and chemical zoning trends in calc-alkaline plutons in which higher color index and more mafic rocks in the outer rim surround lower color index felsic rocks in the interior.   • Nd-doped $BiFeO_3$ materials were synthesized via a sol-gel method. The crystal structure, magnetic properties, and complex impedance spectroscopy of multiferroic $Bi_{1-x}Nd_xFeO_3$ (BNFO) materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and complex impedance spectroscopy. Our results show that the lattice crystal constants (a, c) and the ratio c/a of BNFO materials decreased with increasing Nd concentration. All samples exhibited weak ferromagnetism at room temperature, and the magnetization of samples was enhanced by the presence of $Nd^{3+}$ ions. There was an enhancement in the spontaneous magnetization of BFO with increasing Nd concentration, which is attributable to the collapse of the spin cycloid structure.

  • Several masses of the alpine type ultramafic rocks are found within the Precambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex, western part of Chungnam province. They occur as discontinuous isolated lenticular bodies along the fault line(NNE direction), dominant tectonic directions of Kyeonggi gneiss complex. The ultramafic rocks occur as fault contacts with the adjacent Precambrian metamorphic and metasedimentary rocks. (omitted)

Response of Benthic Foraminifera to Sedimentary Pollution in Masan Bay, Korea (마산만 퇴적환경 오염에 따른 저서성 유공충 분포 변화)

  • Masan Bay is highly polluted by the discharge of large quantities of effluents from the industrial complex and domestic sewage of Masan City, Southeast Korea. Surface sediments from 9 stations were used for geochemical and foraminiferal analyses in order to investigate foraminiferal response to sedimentary pollution in the Bay. The heavy metal concentrations in sediments are relatively higher than those in Kyeonggi Bay and Daesan area, west coastal region of Korea. Zn, Cd, Pb, and As are more concentrated than in world average shale, indicating that the municipal and industrial effluents cause sediment contamination. Responses of benthic foraminifera to the sedimentary pollution effect document a degree of pollution in Masan Bay. The species number and diversity in Masan Bay had lower values than those in Gadeog Channel. In Masan Bay, agglutinated foraminifera are abundant and calcareous foraminiferal tests were frequently pyritized. Eggerella advena and Trochammina pacifica dominated at levels of pollution and could be opportunistic species. These data will provide a baseline for future assessments of environmental quality in Masan Bay.

Interpretation of Origin and Methanogenic Pathways of Coalbed Gases from the Asem-Asem Basin, Southeast Kalimantan, Indonesia (인도네시아 칼리만탄 남동측에 위치하는 아셈-아셈분지 석탄층 가스의 기원과 메탄생성경로 해석)

  • Six gas samples were collected from coal and coaly shale from core AA-1, which was acquired from the Asem-Asem Basin, southeast Kalimantan, Indonesia. These coalbed gas samples were analyzed for the molecular composition, carbon isotope (δ13CCH4, δ13CC2, and δ13CCO2), hydrogen isotope (δDCH4), hydrocarbon index (CHC), and carbon dioxide-methane index (CDMI) to document their origin and methanogenic pathways. Core AA-1 successively consists of lower clastic sedimentary rocks (Sedimentary Unit-1, SU-1) containing coal and coaly shale, and upper limestone (Sedimentary Unit-2, SU-2), unconformably underlain by serpentinized basement interpreted as part of the Cretaceous Meratus subduction complex (MSC). The coal and coaly shale (SU-1) were deposited in a marshes nearby a small-scale river. Compositions of coalbed gases show that methane ranges from 87.35 to 95.29% and ethane ranges from 3.65 to 9.97%. Carbon isotope of coalbed methane (δ13CCH4) ranges from -60.3 to -58.8‰, while hydrogen isotope (δDCH4) ranges from -252.9 to -252.1‰. Carbon isotope of coalbed ethane (δ13CC2) ranges from -32.8 to -31.2‰, carbon isotope of coalbed carbon dioxide (δ13CCO2) ranges from -8.6 to -6.2‰. The coalbed CO2 is interpreted to be an abiogenic origin based on a combination of δ13CCO2 and CDMI and could have been transported from underlying CO2 bearing MSC through faults. The methanogenic pathways of coalbed gases are interpreted to have originated from primary methyl-type fermentation and mixed with CO2 reduction, affecting thermogenic non-marine coal-type gases based on analyses of isotopic ratios and various indexes.

Evolution Trends of Biotite and Hornblende in Granitic Rocks from Yonghae-Yongdok Area, Northeastern Gyeongsang Basin, Korea (경상분지(慶尙盆地) 북동부(北東部) 영해(盈海)·영덕일대(盈德一帶)의 화강암질암(花崗岩質岩)의 흑운모(黑雲母)와 각섬석(角閃石)의 진화경로(進化經路))

  • The granitic rocks in the study area are divided into the schist and gneiss complex, Yongdok pluton, Yonghae pluton and Onjong pluton by their texture, fabric and relationship to the adjacent rocks in the field, Schist and gneiss complex occurs as xenolith or roof pendant in the Yongdok, Yonghae and Onjong plutons. The Yongdok pluton occurs in association with pegmatite and aplite in many places of its pluton. In the field it is obviously clarified that the Yongdok pluton is unconformably overlay by the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The Yonghae and Onjong plutons are gradationally changed each other, and these plutons truncate both the Yongdok pluton and the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Petrographically, the Yongdok pluton consists of granodiorite and granite with minor quartz monzonite. The Yonghae pluton is composed of diorite, quartz diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite. The Onjong pluton also ranges granodiorite to granite. Both the Yongdok and Yonghae-Onjong plutons are different in the constituent minerals, such as alkali feld~par, myrmekite, mica, sphene and mafic minerals. This suggests that each pluton might have been different crystallization sequence and characteristically different gological history during the crystallization period. Iron/magnesium ratio in biotite and hornblende from both the Yongdok and Yonghae-Onjong plutons gradually decrease as the differentiation index increasing in the whole rock. The decrease of this ratio strongly depend on the increase of opaque mineral contents. From the results of chemistry in the whole rocks and some mafic minerals, it is suggest that the granite plutons of the two different geological ages would have been suffered the environment of high oxygen fugacity in the process of magmatic emplacement and during the crystallization period.

  • Various away methods are required in the electrical resistivity survey in order to find anomalous zone reliably. Array methods are classified as several groups. Among these group, a curved survey along the fixed elevation is designed to increase the mobility of men and survey equipments at the rough terrain. Another method is performed at the survey using inclined, curved, and horizontal boreholes. A survey can also be conducted in an arbitrary location by measurements of potentials for a multi sources. The complex data acquired using various away methods are represented by a correct images reconstructed from the 3D inversion. The element division is applied to the region in which the boreholes are curved and inclined because of a spatial discrepancies between the coordinate of each electrode and the nodal point in a model. The resistivity images are obtained from a good agreement for the anomalous zones in open slope and in survey using an inclined borehole.

Genetic Implications of Ultramafic Rocks from the Bibong Area in the Kyeonggi Gneiss Complex (경기편마암복합체내 비봉지역에 분포하는 초염기성암에 대한 성인적 적용)

  • In the Bibong area of the western part of Chungcheongnam-do, ultramafic masses occur as discontinuous isolated lenticular bodies in the Precambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex. They extend for about 200 m long to NNE directions which are parallel to fault lines in the gneiss complex. The ultramafic masses contact with the adjacent gneiss complex as steeply dipping faults. They are dunites and harzburgites and many of them are partially or completely serpentinized. The ultramafic rocks dominantly show protogranular, equigranular and equigranular-$m{\grave{o}}saic$ textures. They also show porphyroclastic (megacrystic) or recrystallized textures reflecting several stages of metamorphism. They contain varying amounts of olivine $(Fo_{89-92})$, enstatitic to bronzitic orthopyroxene, diopsidic clinopyroxene, tremolitic to pargasitic hornblende, and spinel with serpentine, talc, chlorite, calcite and magnetite. The ultramafic rocks have high magnesium numbers and transitional element contents, low alkali contents and show deplete REE patterns. Comparing with available data, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics shown in the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area are similar to those of worldwide mantle xenoliths and orogenic related ultramafic rocks. The field evidences, petrographical, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics shown in the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area are similar to alpine type ultramafic rocks emplaced into the crust by the faulting as mantle slab types. With the petrographical characteristics, these mineralogical compositions suggest that the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area have experienced several stages of retrogressive metamorphism in a condition ranging from the upper amphibolite facies to greenschist facies.

K-Ar Ages and Major Mineral Compositions of the Mesozoic Igneous Rocks in the Vicinity of the Geochang Area (거창(居昌)지역에 분포하는 중생대 화성암류에 대한 연령과 주성분 광물의 화학조성)

  • Devonian Geochang foliated granite and Jurassic plutonic rocks intrude Precambrian metamorphic Complex at Geochang area, southern part of the Korean Peninsular. Among them hornblendes from four Jurassic plutonic bodies which have had no trace of metamorphism or deformation since their intrusion were dated by K-Ar method. Hornblende gabbro dike which intruded Anorthosite of unknown age revealed $204{\pm}10Ma$, and hornblende granite and hornblende-biotite granodiorite were $178{\pm}9Ma$ and $181{\pm}9Ma$, repectively. Also, hornblende diorite which partly showing primary foliations were $178{\pm}9Ma$, so igneous activity of Geochang area, northern part of Jirisan, were active about 180 Ma before. Microprobe data of dated hornblends and other major constituent minerals such as plagioclases and biotites were also reported, and their chemical composition showed systematic changes in terms of lithologic types.
