  • The objective of this study is to conduct the prevention method using electromyography that is to resist the strain on L5/S1 disc and to measure the heart rate for the prevention of low back pain during lifting. EMG signals and heart rate were analyzed under the condition of fixed vertical factor (20∼80cm), two horizontal factors (35cm, 55cm), and two weight factors (10kg, 25kg) 2 times per minute for each lifting task. Eight healthy male workers performed nine-step stretching exercises which were intensified back power at the L5/S1 disc for six months. After completion of the two trials, the results were compared. The results of this analysis show that EMG signals have more an effect on the weight than the horizontal factors similar to those analyzed previous study, and are decreased. Therefore, those exercises presented very efficient. Also, there are not statistically significant differences on the analysis result of heart rate between weight factors.

  • In this paper, we propose an antenna sharing scheme between 800 MHz AMPS and CDMA systems using CDMA transmission antenna. We restructured the path of signals such that signals from two systems use AMPS amplifier or CDMA amplifier. The performance of proposed scheme is compared with currently operating system's performance in terms of call connection rate, call completion rate and dropped-call rate after implementing proposed method to the AMPS/CDMA basestation. The results show that the voice quality and call connection of the proposed system is comparable to that of the commercial systems. The number of antenna at the base station can be reduced without performance degradation if the proposed transmission antenna sharing scheme and previously reported receiving antenna sharing technique are used together.

  • Recently, as the era of ubiquitous has arrived, an infrastructure for the short-distance wireless communication has been extended socially, and thus a variety of services are being proposed. The Multimedia Contents Delivery System using the ZigBee, in particular, has an important stance in enlargement of a variety of services in the aspect of individual-oriented service support though Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). Nonetheless, the ZigBee, or the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard, has many restrictions on the Multimedia Contents Delivery System due to the low data transport rate. In order to improve the ZigBee which presents a limit on the transport rate at the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard, this thesis has designed the burst mode which is a method of transmitting a certain amount of data in block units at a high speed without any stoppage until the completion of the transmission. Also, to provide a Multimedia Contents Delivery Service with an application of the normal data transmission mode, it improved the transmission performance of the ZigBee. In addition, for the Multimedia Contents Delivery Service under the ubiquitous environment, it designed and implemented a broadcasting Multimedia Contents Delivery System based on the ZigBee to conduct a comparative analysis on the data transmission performance according to the transmission method.

  • Wu and Clements-Croome (2005) suggest the preventive maintenance (PM) model with random maintenance quality. They assume that each PM resets the failure rate to zero and the rate of increases of the failure rate gets higher after each additional PM. However a system may not be restored to as good as new immediately after the completion of PM. Thus, this paper modifies the Wu and Clements-Croome's PM model and then the optimal PM policy is suggested. To determine the optimal PM policy, we utilize the expected cost rate per unit time for our model. That is, we obtain the optimal number and the optimal period by minimizing the expected cost rate per unit time. The numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

  • Background: Despite progress in treatment, Stanford type A aortic dissection is still a life-threatening disease. In this study, we analyzed surgical outcomes in patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection according to the extent of surgery at Daegu Catholic University Medical Center. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 98 patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2008 and June 2018. Of these patients, 82 underwent limited replacement (hemi-arch or ascending aortic replacement), while 16 patients underwent total arch replacement (TAR). We analyzed in-hospital mortality, postoperative complications, the overall 5-year survival rate, and the 5-year aortic event-free survival rate. Results: The median follow-up time was 48 months (range, 1-128 months), with a completion rate of 85.7% (n=84). The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 8.2%: 6.1% in the limited replacement group and 18.8% in the TAR group (p=0.120). The overall 5-year survival rate was 78.8% in the limited replacement group and 81.3% in the TAR group (p=0.78). The overall 5-year aortic event-free survival rate was 85.3% in the limited replacement group and 88.9% in the TAR group (p=0.46). Conclusion: The extent of surgery was not related to the rates of in-hospital mortality, complications, aortic events, or survival. Although this study was conducted at a small-volume center, the in-hospital mortality and 5-year survival rates were satisfactory.

  • NaY zeolites synthesized by microwave heating were compared with those obtained by conventional heating. When the same temperature increasing rates were adopted in both heating methods, the microwave heating shortened the induction period and enhanced the rate of crystallization of NaY zeolites compared with the conventional heating. Irrespective of microwave radiation, the fast temperature increasing rate also shortened the induction time and enhanced the crystallization of NaY zeolites. The crystal sizes of NaY zeolites were large under the fast temperature raise of the reaction mixture and became larger by microwave radiation. At the same time, the fast temperature increasing rate has reduced the energy consumption due to the fast completion of reaction during the synthesis of NaY zeolite. The energy consumption in the conventional ethylene glycol bath was lower than that in the microwave oven with the same temperature increasing rate in this study, which means that the energy efficiency is not always high in microwave heating. If the temperature increasing rate is carefully controlled, however, NaY zeolite can be produced with high energy efficiency in the microwave oven.

  • Checkpointing is one of common methods of realizing fault-tolerance for real-time systems. This paper presents a scheme to determine checkpoint intervals using probabilistic optimization. The considered real-time systems comprises multiple tasks in which transient faults can happen with a Poisson distribution. Also, multi-tasks are scheduled by the non-preemptive Rate Monotonic (RM) algorithm. In this paper, we present an optimization problem where the probability of task completion is described by checkpoint numbers. The solution to this problem is the optimal set of checkpoint numbers and intervals that maximize the probability. The probability computation includes schedulability test for the non-preemptive RM algorithm with respect to given numbers of checkpoint re-execution. A case study is given to show the applicability of the proposed scheme.

  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy used for the treatment of pediatric cancer may have many adverse effects on the oral cavity. Oral mucositis, reduced salivary flow, oral infection, hypodontia, microdontia, arrested root development, and enamel hypoplasia are common oral complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of cancer therapy on dental caries activities. The children who had been treated for neuroblastoma in the department of pediatrics, Samsung Medical Center, were included and healthy children served as controls. The salivary flow rate, salivary buffering capacity, and Streptococcus mutans counts of both groups were evaluated using Dentocult$^{(R)}$ SM and Dentobuff$^{(R)}$ Strip. The dental caries activity related to the age at the start of treatment and the time elapsed since treatment completion were also evaluated. As a result, neuroblastoma patients had significantly lower salivary flow rate than the controls, while there were no significant differences between two groups as for salivary buffering capacity and Streptococcus mutans counts. The dental caries activities related to the age at the start of treatment and the time elapsed since treatment completion were not significantly different.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) injected on the rate of new-bone formation for distraction osteogenesis on dogs. Materials & Methods : Twelve adult dogs were randomly selected into two groups of six dogs on each. Unilateral osteotomies were performed on the body of the mandible and an intraoral distractor was mounted to the mandible on dogs. One group was treated with injection of rhBMP-7 and the other group served as the control. RhBMP-7 was administered on the day of surgery by single injection into the medullary bone at the osteotomy gap. Distraction was performed five days after osteotomy as a rate of 0.5 mm twice per day for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after completion of the distraction. Two dogs in each group, totaling four dogs, were killed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after completion of distraction, respectively. The lengthened mandibles were harvested and processed for radiographic and histological examinations. In addition, immunohistochemical examination using osteocalcin expression was studied. Results : Radiographs showed accelerated regenerate ossification with maturation of new bone in the rhBMP-7 group comparing with the control group at the 4 weeks of the consolidation. There was no significant difference in the radiographic findings at the 2 weeks and 8 weeks of the consolidation period. Histological findings demonstrated increased bone healing pattern in the rhBMP-7-treated group during all observation period. The expression of osteocalcin immunoreactivity was hardly detected in the normal mandible of dog, but the expression was detected in all experimental rhBMP-7 treated specimens. There were also significant increasing in number of positive immunostaining cells and staining intensity of osteocalcin expression in the rhBMP-7 treated group compared with those of the control group on 2-weeks and 4-weeks. There was a significant decreasing in staining intenstiy of all both two groups on 8 weeks of consolidation period, but significant differences of immunostaining was not seen in two groups. Conclusions : A single injection of rhBMP-7 at the time of osteotomy may stimulate the rate of regenerate ossification and increase callus maturation during distraction osteogenesis. In addition, it may shorten the distraction osteogenesis procedure and decrease the prevalence of complications associated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

  • Recently immersive virtual reality (VR) becomes popular due to the advanced development of I/O interfaces and related SWs for effectively constructing VR environments. In particular, natural and intuitive manipulation of 3D virtual objects is still considered as one of the most important user interaction issues. This paper presents a comparative study on the manipulation and interaction of 3D virtual objects using different interfaces and interactions in three VR environments. The comparative study includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Three different experimental setups are 1) typical desktop-based VR using mouse and keyboard, 2) hand gesture-supported desktop VR using a Leap Motion sensor, and 3) immersive VR by wearing an HMD with hand gesture interaction using a Leap Motion sensor. In the desktop VR with hand gestures, the Leap Motion sensor is put on the desk. On the other hand, in the immersive VR, the sensor is mounted on the HMD so that the user can manipulate virtual objects in the front of the HMD. For the quantitative analysis, a task completion time and success rate were measured. Experimental tasks require complex 3D transformation such as simultaneous 3D translation and 3D rotation. For the qualitative analysis, various factors relating to user experience such as ease of use, natural interaction, and stressfulness were evaluated. The qualitative and quantitative analyses show that the immersive VR with the natural hand gesture provides more intuitive and natural interactions, supports fast and effective performance on task completion, but causes stressful condition.
