Logging for a Stone Column Using Crosshole Seismic Testing (크로스홀 탄성파 시험을 이용한 쇄석다짐말뚝의 검측)

  • An integrity testing for stone columns was attempted using crosshole S-wave logging. The method is conceptionally quite similar to the crosshole sonic logging (CSL) for drilled piers. The critical difference in the logging is the use of s-wave rather than p-wave, which is used in CSL, because s-wave is the only wave sensing the stiffness of slower unbounded materials than water. An electro-mechanical source, which can generate reversed S-wave signals, was utilized in the logging. The stone column was delineated from the S-wave travel times across the stone column, and taking S-wave velocities of the crushed stone and surrounding soil into account. The volume calculated from the diametrical variance delineated is very close to the actual quantity of the stone filled.

  • Busan-Geoje Fixed Link, total length of 8.2km, consist of bridge and immersed tunnel connects Gaduk island, Busan and Jangmokmyon, Geoje, in extension of the $58^{th}$ local road. The immersed tunnel, a total length of 3.7km within Busan-Geoje Fixed Link, was planed first timein domestic but the deep water depth like maximum of 50m with offshore conditions and the 35m thickness of soft clay layer under the immersed tunnel, migth be some problems like the differential settlement during or after works. So it was designed to install SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) column partially to improve the soft ground under the immersed tunnel. In this paper, it is presented to illustrate the design including ground condition under the immersed tunnel, improvement design, upheaval shape and ratio due to SCP test construction.

Geotechnical Engineering Progress with the Incheon Bridge Project

  • Incheon Bridge, 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge, will be opened to the traffic in October 2009 and this will be the new landmark of the gearing up north-east Asia as well as the largest & longest bridge of Korea. Incheon Bridge is the integrated set of several special featured bridges including a magnificent cable-stayed girder bridge which has a main span of 800 m width to cross the navigation channel in and out of the Port of Incheon. Incheon Bridge is making an epoch of long-span bridge designs thanks to the fully application of the AASHTO LRFD (load & resistance factor design) to both the superstructures and the substructures. A state-of-the-art of the geotechnologies which were applied to the Incheon Bridge construction project is introduced. The most Large-diameter drilled shafts were penetrated into the bedrock to support the colossal superstructures. The bearing capacity and deformational characteristics of the foundations were verified through the world's largest static pile load test. 8 full-scale pilot piles were tested in both offshore site and onshore area prior to the commencement of constructions. Compressible load beyond 30,000 tonf pressed a single 3 m diameter foundation pile by means of bi-directional loading method including the Osterberg cell techniques. Detailed site investigation to characterize the subsurface properties had been carried out. Geotextile tubes, tied sheet pile walls, and trestles were utilized to overcome the very large tidal difference between ebb and flow at the foreshore site. 44 circular-cell type dolphins surround the piers near the navigation channel to protect the bridge against the collision with aberrant vessels. Each dolphin structure consists of the flat sheet piled wall and infilled aggregates to absorb the collision impact. Geo-centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of the dolphin in the seabed and to verify the numerical model for the design. Rip-rap embankments on the seabed are expected to prevent the scouring of the foundation. Prefabricated vertical drains, sand compaction piles, deep cement mixings, horizontal natural-fiber drains, and other subsidiary methods were used to improve the soft ground for the site of abutments, toll plazas, and access roads. Light-weight backfill using EPS blocks helps to reduce the earth pressure behind the abutment on the soft ground. Some kinds of reinforced earth like as MSE using geosynthetics were utilized for the ring wall of the abutment. Soil steel bridges made of corrugated steel plates and engineered backfills were constructed for the open-cut tunnel and the culvert. Diverse experiences of advanced designs and constructions from the Incheon Bridge project have been propagated by relevant engineers and it is strongly expected that significant achievements in geotechnical engineering through this project will contribute to the national development of the longspan bridge technologies remarkably.

  • In this study, cohesion of soft ground, soft ground depth and embankment height varying conditions, such as the impact of each condition after the calculation of the range, SCP was performed to evaluate the applicability of the method. And Cu = 5.0tf/$m^2$, embankment height is 3.0m below 15.0m depth rouge anti Floor, Cu = 3.0tf/$m^2$, embankment height of 5.0m 12.0m depth below the soft soil, Cu = 5.0tf/$m^2$, If the depth of soft soil embankment height of 7.0m and below 5.0m was applicable.

  • Having an awareness of the ongoing conception of Honam-Jeju, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China subsea tunnels for accommodating the railway, this paper investigates immersion tube tunnel technology, one of the underwater tunnel construction methods. This paper analyses the current status of immersed tube tunnels according to their location and function. This paper summarises the dredging methods and briefly introduces the muck disposal facility. Also introduced are the case studies where measures were taken to mitigate the impact of dredging on the surrounding marine environment. This paper also explains how the tunnel elements are connected underwater using an immersion joint. This paper classifies the foundation methods into bedding and ground improvement methods and provides summaries, including their environmental impact associated with drill cuttings and cementitious binders.

Analysis on the Analytical Behavior of Soft Ground Reinforced with Granular Compaction Piles (GCP로 보강된 연약지반의 해석적 거동분석)

  • Although many studies on the Granular Compaction Pile (GCP) have been done by many researchers, the GCP design has not been systematically done due to the absence of the rational design methodology. As the GCP design has been mostly done by engineers' own experiences, some failure cases have been reported to occur. For this reason, it is very difficult to confirm definite causes of the failure and establish the prevention plans for the failure. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the optimal mixing ratio of gravel and sand, the effects of the internal friction angle of the GCP on the stress concentration ratio and the vertical and horizontal settlements. In order to analyze the behavior of the soft ground reinforced with the GCP depending on the different design parameters such as the stress concentration ratio and the internal friction angle, a number of finite element (FE) analyses were performed. From the direct shear test, the optimal mixing ratio of gravel to sand was found to be 70:30. Based on the numerical analyses, as the internal friction angle increased, the stress concentration ratio increased and it converged to a constant value. In addition, the larger the internal friction angle, the smaller the settlements. Consequently, the use of the optimal mixing ratio of gravel and sand can lead to reducing both the lateral flow and the heaving phenomenon.

  • Strength and deformation characteristics of oyster shell-sand mixtures were investigated to utilize waste oyster shell being treated as a waste material. Standard penetration test (SPT) is a common method to obtain in-situ strength in sand. However, in case of oyster shell-sand mixtures, there was no information between SPT N-value and internal friction angle of mixture soils. In this paper SPT experiments from several large scaled model chamber tests and large scaled direct shear tests were carried out with varying unit weight of oyster shell-sand mixtures. Appropriate correlations were in tile study observed among N-value, unit weight and internal friction angle, which make it possible to estimate in-situ strength from SPT and the coefficient of volume compressibility from the confined compression tests to compute the settlement of oyster shell-sand mixtures.

An electro-mechanical source, which can generate reversed Swave signals, was utilized in the logging. The stone column was delineated using the S-wave travel times across the stone column, the S-wave velocity profile of the crushed stone($V_{cs}$-profile) and that of surrounding soil($V_s$-profile). In the calculation of $V_{cs}$-profile of the crushed stone, its friction angle and Ko (coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest) are recommended to be used. The calculation of the column diameter is not much affected by the values of friction angle and Ko.

A Study on the Behavior Characteristics of Soft Clay Ground by C.G.S Method (C.G.S공법을 적용한 연약점토지반에서의 거동특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study the pilot test of C.G.S (Compaction Grouting System) as injection method by low slump mortar was performed and the results were analyzed in order to find out the application of this method to the soft ground and the effect of settlement restraint. The site for pilot test is adjacent to apartments supported by pile foundations. Sand drain method was performed previously as countermeasures against settlement, but settlement occurs continuously because this ground is very soft. Site investigations such as SPT, CPT and vane shear test were performed to determine the characteristics of ground improvement after the installation of C.G.S. Field measurements were performed on purpose to find out the displacement of ground during the installation of C.G.S. From the results of this study, C.G.S method can be optimized by the control of radius, space, depth, injection material and injection pressure. C.G.S improves soft ground with radial consolidation of adjacent soft ground. Considering that increase of N value to about 3, C.G.S can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as constrain the settlement of soft ground. It is also expected to be economic and effective in the improvement of ground when it is used in applicable sites.

Effect of Sea Water on Curing and Strength of Cemented Sand (해수가 고결모래의 양생 및 강도에 미치는 영향)

  • Sand compaction pile and stone column replacement methods have been commonly used for improving soft ground in the nearshore. Recently, DCM (Deep cement mixing) method, which can harden soft clays by mixing with cement, is more popularly used in such soft ground improvement. Sandy soils also exist in the seashore. Therefore, in this study, the effect of salinity in sea water and curing methods on the strength of cemented sand was evaluated in terms of unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The sand was mixed with five different cement ratios and distilled water or sea water, and then compacted into a cylindrical specimen. They were cured for 3 days under sea water for DCM construction condition and air cured for onshore curing condition. When a specimen was cured under sea water without confinement, it was easily collapsed due to initiation of cracks. When the cement ratio and curing method were the same, the UCS of the specimen without sea water was at maximum 3.5 times higher than those with sea water. The sea water used for mixing sand had more influence on strength reduction than the sea water used for curing. When the cement ratio was the same, the UCS of air-cured specimen was at average 2 times higher than those of water-cured specimen, regardless of water used.
