The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to assess a Korean home environment for middle childhood children. The subjects were 283 mothers of 6- to 8-year-old children in Korea. The method for data analysis included Mean, SD, $x^2$, Cramer's V, factor analysis, Pearson correlations, and Cronbach's $\alpha$. As a result, 45 items of the scale were found to be satisfactory in terms of item distribution and item discrimination(Cramer's discriminant coefficients ranged from .256-.615). Four factors with 21 items were extracted from the factor analysis. Subscales were 'academic stimulation(9)', 'acceptance(4)', 'child-centered environment(4)', 'basic care for daily routine(4)'. Analysis of the relation of this scale to SES, MC-HOME, and children's developmental functioning(cognitive, language, and social) showed acceptable concurrent validity. Internal consistency of this scale was high, including internal reliability of subscales. These results confirm this scale as a valid and reliable measure of the Korean home environment for middle childhood children.
Community child center is the facility of the highest number of children in child welfare facilities. But plan for the physical environment is not considered importantly because of insufficient finance. However impact of the physical environment in growing children is very closely related in terms of the emotional as well as a functional perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to understand current physical environment and to seek to find alternative methods that can be resolved space matters. As a basic study for this, in the present study we compare and integrate the design principles of child care facility guidelines. And we set up a framework of analysis to derive the design principles that are required in the target area. It is possible to analyze the environmental characteristics of community child center located in Gwang-ju from this framework, to obtain the flowing results. First, draw items are formation of inner direction, provide of environmental supportability, flexibility of use, healthy space. It can be understood that the emotional aspects and physical aspects should be considered comprehensively. Second, as a result of the case analysis, planning elements consideration of the functional aspects appeared high fulfillment rate generally. As a result, in order to improve the problems of the target space, increasing the functionality is necessary and also requires consideration of sensitivity of the user's face.
The purpose of this study is to offer information related to recommended dietary allowances for young children and food guidelines for preschool children in Sweden. Sweden, located in Europe, is the most developed country for young child care system. Swedish nutrition policy background, Swedish recommended dietary allowances for young children, and food guidelines of early childhood education center in Sweden were used. The number of Swedish child care centers increased from 70,000 in 1970 to 700,000 in 2000. The Swedish Institute of Public Health promoted children's indoor and outdoor activity. The aim of the Swedish public health contains children's safety, good food habits, and eating food safely. Swedish Food Administration made recommended dietary allowance and food guidelines for children care centers. The aim of food guidelines was to increase energy, calcium, iron, and dietary fiber intake. Swedish RDA contains minimum and maximum intake as well as mean intake for macro and micro nutrients. The fat intake ratio of energy is increased for younger children. For preschool children, the food guideline is determined by dietary allowances for breakfast, lunch, and snack respectively. Food guideline contains meal time schedule, menu for each meal using food model, amount of food for age group, and recommended dietary allowance for each meal. It is recommended for Korean early childhood education center: 1) Korean RDA for young children should be made range of intake, minimum and maximum intake. 2) Food guideline should be make for Korean child care center. 3) Korean child care centers should offer an afternoon snack twice for children who return home late. 4) Nutrition education program for preschool teachers should be developed for children's good eating habits and health promotion.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the space feature of group day care home in Taegu city. This study was conducted by means of the observation on the equipments, the actual measurement of space and environment of group day care home. And the questionnaire survey by the chief of group day care home was also used for this study. The samples for analysis were 20 group day care home located in Taegu city. The major findings were as follows ; 1. The chief's satisfaction of the facilities of group day care home and it's management was generally low. 2. The design of door, the possessing of furniture, and the items related to toilet should be improved in the space or environmental conditions. 3. According to the observation on the equipments, it was found that the environment of group day care home was generally not desirable.
Objectives: This study aims to understand the concentration, diversity, and antibiotic characteristics of staphylococci present in the indoor air of child-care facilities. Methods: Air sampling was performed from October 2012 to January 2013 in 120 child-care facilities in Seoul, Korea. Methicillin-resistant bacteria were selected from the total obtained airborne bacteria and subjected to 16S rRNA analysis for methicillin-resistant staphylococcal species determination. Identified staphylococcal strains were tested for resistance to a range of antibiotics. Results: Average total airborne bacterial concentration was $508.9{\pm}246.3CFU/m^3$. Indoor concentration of total airborne bacteria had a significant positive correlation with the $CO_2$ concentration in the child-care facilities. Methicillin-resistant staphylococci were present in 13.3% of the child-care facilities studied. A total of four species (S. epidermidis, S. cohnii, S. saprophyticus, S. sp.) and 55 strains were identified from the indoor air of the child-care facilities. Staphylococcus cohnii was the most common species (54.5%), followed by S. epidermidis (38.2%). All of the isolated staphylococcal strains exhibited high resistance to oxacillin, erythromycin, mupirocin, and ceftizoxime. Especially, S. saprophyticus strains showed more multidrug resistance to oxacillin, vancomycin, clindamycin, erythromycin, lincomycin, ceftizoxime, mupirocin, and tetracycline than did other species. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that a monitoring system for multidrug-resistant bacteria is needed in facilities for children, as the community-associated infections of these bacteria are increasing.
The purpose of this study is to develop a nature friendly education program that would support ecological literacy of preschool children and to examine the effects of the program on their ecological knowledge and positive attitudes toward nature. The subjects of the study were 59 children from two child-care centers located at Gyeonggi Province. 30 preschoolers from one center were allocated into an experimental group, while 29 preschoolers from the other center were regarded as the control group. The program was composed of 24 sessions, performed three times a week for 20-30 minutes from May to June 2009. The instrument included the knowledge and attitudes toward the environmental scale for preschool children. The following results were obtained. First, the experimental group was found to attain higher level of ecological knowledge and more positive attitudes about nature as a result of the program. Second, after the program was administrated, the experimental group showed higher level of the knowledge and more positive attitudes about nature than the control group. These results suggest a program which conducts within a integrated teaching frame of meeting and getting familiar with nature and taking care of animals and plants, can become an effective early childhood education tool which fosters positive attitudes and knowledge concerning the environment.
The purpose of this study was to identify some residential characteristics of Post-retirement and characteristics of the Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) favored by those baby-boomer generations soon retiring. A web-based online survey was conducted with middle-class baby-boomers living in the Seoul-Incheon-Gyengki capital area and the five metropolitan cities of Korea between 9th and 20th of February in 2017. A total 0f 507 responses were valid for statistical analysis. The findings obtained that they preferred living Urban outskirts after retirement; Desired area of post-retirement was differentiated depending on asset and educational attainment; 63.4% of respondents had no intentions to live with adult child; a combination of independent living and assisted living was the most preferred form of the CCRCs; Over 80% of respondents had intention to live in independent living, assisted living and nursing home; and Intention to live in assisted living and nursing home was differentiated depending on Intention to live with adult child. Among the four Community-linked types, the Hospital-based one was most popular. The University-based and Religion-based ones were then preferred by females than males. The results obtained here can be used for reflecting the residents needs when planning the CCRCs in Korea.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the influence of children's and caregivers' perceptions of local neighborhood environments on children's physical activities (PAs) and screen-based activities (SBAs) among low-income families. Methods: Secondary data analysis was performed using the data of 171 low-income children attending community child care centers and of their caregivers. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis and logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze data. Results: PAs were insufficient and SBAs were excessive in the majority of children. Children and primary caregivers had moderately negative perceptions of their local neighborhood environments. However these perceptions were not found to affect children's PAs or SBAs significantly. Conclusion: Although perceptions of local neighborhoods were not found to significantly influence children's PAs or SBAs, efforts are needed to make community child care centers and neighborhoods safer and more activity-friendly.
This study aimed to identify the contributors of extra-curricular activities of preschool children focusing on home environmental factors(financial capital, human capital, and social capital) and maternal belief about factors on academic achievement(child's effort, child's ability, teacher's instruction, and maternal teaching). One hundred and seventy three mothers whose preschool children were attending child-care centers in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do participated in the survey. Kinlaw et al.(2001)'s Importance of Effort/Ability Scale was used to assess the mother's belief about the factors on academic achievement. Stipek et al.(1992)'s Activities Sub-scales was revised to measure a social capital, that is the mother's formal and informal activities providing to their preschool child. Educational level was utilized as human capital and monthly income was considered as financial capital. Also, using open ended questions, the subjects were asked to respond to the numbers of extra-curricula activities their child was presently attending, and when he or she began to attend the extra-curricular activity. The main results are as follows. In general, the mothers provided informal activities to their preschool child more than formal activities. Also, they believed the teacher's instruction is the most important and the child's ability the least important in their child's academic achievement. The number of extra-curricular activities was predicted by mothers' formal activities and their belief on their child's ability. The age of starting extra-curricular activities were explained by mothers' formal activities and their educational level.
Objectives: This study aimed to develop dietary education textbooks for elementary school students by focusing on the three core values of environment, health and gratitude from the National Food Education Plan. Methods: The contents of textbooks and teacher's guidebooks were developed with brainstorming of the authors as well as consultation with experts and by considering not only the three core values of environment, health, and gratitude, but also the performance indicators of the 2nd National Food Education Plan and the key competencies and creative convergence approach of the 2015 revised national curriculum. Results: A total of 12 different dietary education textbooks named 'Good Dietary Life Guide' and the teachers' guidebooks from the first to the sixth grade of elementary school were developed. The textbooks were fundamentally developed connecting the three core values, the outcome indices of the 2nd National Food Education Plan and the key competences of the 2015 revised national curriculum. Various educational activities such as thinking, debate, writing, cooperative learning, experience, practice were included to promote students' participation. These books could be utilized in every field of dietary education targeting elementary students such as creative experiential activity, convergent classes (integrated subjects, Practical arts, Social studies, Science, Moral education and Korean), after school classes, rural experience, general agricultural education, after-school child care services and community child care centers. Conclusions: The continuous and repetitive use of the textbooks from the first to the sixth grade would contribute to the improvement of food habits and the personalities of elementary school students, and consequently make the students grow up as healthy citizens.
