  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parent- adolescent communication on self-concept and problem behavior of adolescents. Method: The participants in this study were 480 students from middle schools in Daejeon City. Data were collected from May 19 to 30, 2008 and analyzed using SPSS WIN 14.0 version. Result: The mean scores for communication with fathers and mothers were 2.98 and 3.35 respectively and for self-concept, 2.80. The highest reported percentage for problem behavior over the past year were going to the noraebang (Karoki) or videobang (PC Cafe) (78.6%). Significant differences were found for the influence of parent-adolescent communication on self-concept and problem behavior. Communication with fathers and with mothers was positive correlated (r=.365, p<.001). The difference in self-concept for communication with fathers was F=60.40, p<.001, and with mothers, F=51.74, p<.001 and for problem behavior, for communication with fathers, F=3.33, p<.05, and with mothers, F=10.05, p<.001. For self-concept and communication with fathers the correlation was r=.512, p<.001, with mothers, r=.453, p<.001 There was a negative correlation between self-concept and problem behavior(r=-.248, p<.001). Conclusion: This results suggest that practical parent-adolescent communication programs should be developed and applied to bolster communication of adolescents with their parents.

  • This study examined the variables that influence middle school students' level of life satisfaction and tested a hypothetical structural equation model relating the variables to middle school students' level of life satisfaction. The subjects were 2,829 (1,411 boys and 1,418 girls) pupils who participated in the Korean Survey on the Familial Consciousness of Youth and Parents (KSYC-Familial Consciousness) in 2010. Data were analyzed through frequency, percentages, Pearson's correlations using SPSS 18.0 and structural equation modeling with AMOS 7.0. The findings are as follows. The proposed model, as revised, demonstrated the effectiveness of an analysis of the structural equation model and illustrated that all three variables (fathers' parenting behavior, communication with fathers, self-concept) indicated a direct or indirect influence on middle school students' level of life satisfaction. Fathers' parenting behavior had the greatest total effect on middle school students' life satisfaction. Fathers' parenting behavior, communication with fathers and self-concept explained 59% of the total variance of middle school students' life satisfaction. The implications for future studies are also discussed.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relative influences of senior elementary school children's communication level with their fathers and peer competence on their happiness. Methods: The subjects of this study were 310 fifth and sixth grade students attending elementary school in Jeollanam-do. They responded to the level of communication with their fathers, peer competence, and happiness. For the data, t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed. Results: First, there were some statistically significant differences according to gender differences in self-esteem and a sub-factor of happiness and the differences according to grades in open-type communication and problem-type communication. Second, it was found that children's happiness was highly correlated with communication with their fathers and peer competence. Third, the factors having the greatest relative influence on overall happiness were in the order of peer competence, open-type communication, problem-type communication, and gender. The variables influencing and the order of relative influence differed according to sub-factors of happiness. Conclusion/Implications: The present study revealed that peer competence has a significant impact on children's happiness. The results of this study suggest that research and development of convergent programs that can improve communication with fathers, peer competence, and children's happiness are necessary.

The fathers saw the meaning of parenting as being in five different domains: social, cognitive, emotional, physical and environmental. As for paternal roles, they thought that a fathers should serve as emotional supporters. The parenting difficulties that they faced were attributed to time constraints. • The purpose of this study is to explore Korean divorced mothers' experiences of noncustodial fathers' involvement in children's lives after divorce and co-parenting relationships. The data were collected from 17 mothers who were divorced between the years of 2004 and 2009, and were raising at least one minor child. Data were analyzed based on the inductive data analysis method. Divorced mothers' experiences of noncustodial fathers' involvement in children's lives after divorce were categorized in three ways: a satisfactory on-going relationship, a dissatisfactory on-going relationship, and a discontinued relationship. The results show that a few mothers were satisfied with the degree of the fathers' involvement in the children's lives 1) if the fathers were interested in their children and responsive to their children, and 2) if the fathers paid either child support or provided some financial supports for their children based on the fathers' financial abilities. However, the majority of the mothers were dissatisfied with the degree of the fathers' involvement in the children's lives. While some of the mothers maintained a relationship with the children's fathers despite their dissatisfaction, others discontinued the relationship. Regarding the co-parenting relationship after divorce, the relationships with the fathers were classified as either cooperative relationships or uncooperative relationships. The majority of the mothers experienced difficulties establishing cooperative co-parenting relationships with the fathers, but three mothers had cooperative relationships. The reasons for these uncooperative relationships were: uncooperative fathers, uncooperative mothers, or ambiguous communication regarding parenting after divorce. These findings suggest parenting education for divorced parents.

  • The present study explored parenting behaviors of fathers associated with 3 types of aggression in their sons and identified inter-generational pathways of aggression. Subjects were 160 Korean elementary school(5-6th grade) boys and their fathers. Data were gathered via questionnaires. Results were that fathers' use of power assertive control and lack of open communication were positively associated with sons' use of both relational and proactive aggression. Fathers' encouragement of aggressive behavior was associated with sons' reactive aggression. Finally, fathers' aggression was net directly associated with sons' aggression, but was fully mediated by parenting. Results were discussed in terms of implications for the Korean cultural context.

  • The subjects of this study were 283 $6^{th}$ and $8^{th}$ grade students and their homeroom teachers. Data were analyzed by frequency, %, Pearson's, two-way ANOVA, and stepwise regression. Results showed that open communication with parents and self-esteem were positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Depression was negatively related to social competence and positively related to antisocial behavior. The $8^{th}$ graders had higher scores than $6^{th}$ graders in antisocial behavior and lower levels of social competence and communication with parents. Girls were higher in social competence and communication with parents and lower in antisocial behavior than boys. Depression impacted social competence in girls, and communication with fathers impacted social competence in boys. Grade, open communication with fathers, and self-esteem had significant effects on the antisocial behavior in boys.
