This paper proposes a new approach to find the optimum ratios between sizes of the heat exchangers of the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) system with limited size to maximize the efficiency of the steam turbine (bottom) cycle of combined cycle power plants (CCPP), but without performing the bottom cycle analysis. This could be achieved by minimizing the unavailable exergy (the sum of the destroyed and the lost exergies) resulted from the heat transfer process of the HRSG system. The present approach is relatively simple and straightforward because the process of the trial-and-error method, typical in performing the bottom cycle analysis for the system optimization, could be avoided. To demonstrate the usefulness of the present method, a single-stage HRSG system was chosen and the optimum evaporation temperature was obtained corresponding to the condition of the maximum useful work. The results show that the optimum evaporation temperature based on the present exergy analysis appears similar to that based on the bottom cycle analysis. Also shown is the dependency of size (NTU) ratios between the heat exchangers on the inlet gas temperature, which is another important factor in determining the optimum condition once overall size of the heat recovery steam generator is given. The present approach turned out to be a useful tool for optimization of the singlestage HRSG systems and can easily be extended to multi-stage systems.
The Kalina cycle (KC) is considered as one of the most efficient systems for recovery of low grade heat. Recently, Kalina based power and cooling cogeneration cycles (KPCCCs) have been suggested and attracted much attention. This paper presents an energy and exergy analysis of a recently suggested KPCCC with flexible loads. The cycle consists of a KC (KCS-11) and an aqua-ammonia absorption refrigeration cycle. By adjusting the splitting ratios, the cycle can be operated with four modes of pure Kalina cycle, pure absorption cooling cycle, Kalina-cooling parallel cycle, and Kalina-cooling series cycle. The effects of system variables and the operating modes on the energetic and exergetic performances of the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the system has great potential for efficient utilization of low-grade heat source by adjusting loads of power and cooling.
In this paper, we propose a novel navigation method combined limit-cycle method and the vector field method for avoidance of unexpected obstacles in the dynamic environment. The limit-cycle method is used to obstacle avoidance in front of the robot and the vector field method is used to obstacle avoidance in the side of robot. The proposed method is tested on pioneer 2-DX mobile robot. The simulations and experiments demonstrate in the effectiveness of the proposed method for navigation of a mobile robot in the complicated and dynamic environments.
Thermodynamic cycles using binary mixtures as working fluids offer a high potential for utilization of low-temperature heat sources. This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of Goswami cycle which was recently suggested to produce power and cooling simultaneously and combines the Rankine cycle and absorption refrigeration cycle by using ammoniawater mixture as working fluid. Effects of the system parameters such as concentration of ammonia and turbine inlet pressure on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that refrigeration capacity or thermal efficiency has an optimum value with respect to ammonia concentration as well as to turbine inlet pressure.

Stirling cycle was actualized as so called ‘hot air engine’. It has been focused again lately as one of measures for exhaust gas emission problem, but as small power engine because of its method of heat addition. Recently marine power plants commenced to meet a stringent environmental restrictions by international convention, Marpol so that diesel engines as main and auxiliarly power plants are urged to be reformed to reduce NOx emission. Author devised a compression ignition engine as a large marine power plants combined with turbo charger based on stirling cycle, and analyzed the performance by means of basic thermodynamic calculation. Analyzed in this paper, were theoretical efficiency, mean effective pressure, required equivalence ratio, gas turbine power ratio, maximum pressure, states of turbo-charger inlet gas and exhaust gas, manifesting that the engine could be proposed as one of the future power plants of marine use.
