  • The elegant early experiments of Herschel demonstrated that there is light after the visible spectrum in a region we call the near infrared (NIR). This was followed by the work which showed that the spectrum went further into what we call the mid infrared (MIR). The MIR has been used for many years as a qualitative and quantitative region to measure constituent values. The MIR region contains the fundamental vibrations which can be theoretically calculated from symmetry rules and harmonic oscillator equations. The NIR is not as straight forward because the region from 400-2500 nm does not contain any of the fundamental vibrations only combination bands and overtones. Over the past fifty years efforts to understand the NIR have largely been ignored while the quantitative aspects of the region have been utilized. This presentation will focus on the efforts to define terms for NIR, examine the calculation of combination bands and overtones and ways to interpret the spectra. The interpretation of the NIR has been aided greatly in recent years by the use of two dimensional spectroscopy which allows the correlation of bands in one spectral region with that of the NIR.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the form and components, decoration and locality of pyongnangans(平欄干) in Yangban's Houses(32 Houses) in Gyeongbuk region, The results of this study, which were carried out through both survey and on-site study, are as below. First, Pyongnangans of Gyeongbuk region Yangban's Houses can be classified into 4 different types, which are (1)Mureum type, (2)Gyoran(交欄) type, (3)Mureum-Saldae combination type, (4)Simplified Saldae type. And these 4 types are again subdivided into eight types, depending on differences of both detailed form and framework. Gyoran type are the most common cases in Yangban's Houses of Gyeongbuk region, whose number is followed by the order of Mureum type, Mureum-Saldae combination type and Simplified Saldae type Pyongnangans. Decorative 亞 shaped Gyoran type are more set up in Sarangchaes than in Anchaes, and this was because Decorative Gyorans are more appropriate to show the Social status and class of a patriarch than humble Mureum type. Pyongnangans of Yangban's Houses in Gyeongbuk region have their peculiarities in the exclusion of decorativeity, by consistent use of plain single-layer Pyongnangans. A certain locality is reflected on the types and detailed forms of Pyonnangans. Mureum type are widely found in Gyeoungju region Yangban's Houses, while Gyoran type were more often used in Andong region. In Bonghwa region, Mureum-Saldae combination type are found in large quantities. This was due to the locational chateristics of Sarangchaes in Bonghwa region, which were usually built on steep slopes.

  • The design of the substrate significantly affects the thermal history and the residual stress formation in the vicinity of a repaired region by a directed energy deposition (DED) process. The occurrence of defects in the repaired region depends on the thermal history and residual stress formation. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the inclined angle and depth of the substrate on the thermal and residual stress characteristics in the vicinity of a repaired region by a DED process through two-dimensional finite element analyses (FEAs). The temperature and residual stress distributions in the vicinity of the repaired region were predicted according to the combination of the inclined angle and depth of the substrate. The effects of the inclined angle and depth on the depth of the heat affected zone and the maximum value of the residual stress were examined. A proper combination of the inclined angle and depth of the substrate was estimated to decrease the residual stress in the vicinity of the repaired region.

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of angiogenesis under various physiological and pathological conditions. We found that the VEGF isoforms VEGF120, VEGF164, and VEGF188 were expressed in the bovine mammary gland and bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs). Expression of VEGF in the mammary gland was significantly higher during the lactation period than during the dry period. Although dexamethasone or prolactin alone had little effect on the expression of VEGF, that in dexamethasone-treated cells was significantly induced after additional treatment with prolactin. Furthermore, the VEGF expression induced by the combination of dexamethasone and prolactin was reduced by PD98059 in a dose-dependent manner. This combination also stimulated the phosphorylation of p44/p42 MAP kinase in these cells. These results strongly suggest that the combination of dexamethasone and prolactin stimulates VEGF expression in bMECs via p44/p42 MAP kinase.

  • A conventional adaptive noise canceller (ANC) using LMS algorithm suffers from the misadjustment of adaptive filter weights due to the gradient-estimate noise by input speech signal at steady state. In this paper, an ANC is proposed which uses the combination of VSLMS (variable step size LMS) and SA (sign algorithm) to improve steady state performance and convergence rate. SA algorithm is applied in speech region to prevent the weights from perturbing by output speech of ANC and VSLMS algorithm is applied to improve convergence rate and channel tracking ability in silence region and adaptive transient region. In compute rsimulation, the performance of the proposed VSLMS-SA combination algorithm is much better than LMS algorithm and the algorithm, recently proposed by greenberg, with adaptation step-size parameter determine dby sum method in convergence rate, channel tracking and steady state performance.

  • The dynamic instability of doubly curved panels, subjected to non-uniform tensile in-plane harmonic edge loading $P(t)=P_s+P_d\;{\cos}{\Omega}t$ is investigated. The present work deals with the problem of the occurrence of combination resonances in contrast to simple resonances in parametrically excited doubly curved panels. Analytical expressions for the instability regions are obtained at ${\Omega}={\omega}_m+{\omega}_n$, (${\Omega}$ is the excitation frequency and ${\omega}_m$ and ${\omega}_n$ are the natural frequencies of the system) by using the method of multiple scales. It is shown that, besides the principal instability region at ${\Omega}=2{\omega}_1$, where ${\omega}_1$ is the fundamental frequency, other cases of ${\Omega}={\omega}_m+{\omega}_n$, related to other modes, can be of major importance and yield a significantly enlarged instability region. The effects of edge loading, curvature, damping and the static load factor on dynamic instability behavior of simply supported doubly curved panels are studied. The results show that under localized edge loading, combination resonance zones are as important as simple resonance zones. The effects of damping show that there is a finite critical value of the dynamic load factor for each instability region below which the curved panels cannot become dynamically unstable. This example of simultaneous excitation of two modes, each oscillating steadily at its own natural frequency, may be of considerable interest in vibration testing of actual structures.

  • Education is widely recognized one of main sources for growth. This paper attempts to incorporate the general recognition into formal regional growth model. The model structure is largely neoclassical. It produces a single good with the two factors, educated labor and non-educated labor, via a constant return production migrating to the region with the higher real wage. The educated labor in a region is accumulated by two sources, migration and physical education capital, while the non-educated labor is by only migration. The paper shows that regional growth equilibrium is characterized as a saddle point. This indicates the presence of the minimum threshold size that must be overcome before a region may grow. It contrasts sharply with results obtained in regional growth models. The paper suggests that regional growth is determined less by the technical characteristics of regional production function characteristics of regional production function but by the stock combination of educated function but by the stock combination of education labor and non-educated labor. Based on this result, the impact of agglomeration economies on regional growth is explored. It is by phase diagram demonstrated that the presence of agglomeration economies do not always lead a region to growth since there still exists the minimum threshold even in the presence of agglomeration economies.

  • In order to apply precast decks to the continuous composite bridges, several experiments and analytical studies were performed. For the continuous composite bridges, special attention should be paid to the transverse joints in negative moment region. Judging from the results, combination of longitudinal internal prestressing tendon and the external tendon can be effectively used for the prevention of cracking in the negative moment region of precast decks.

  • In the maxillary anterior region, reconstruction of the localized alveolar ridge defect is very important in enhancing the esthetics of fixed partial denture. A 40-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of the inconvenience and unesthetic problem of 3-unit maxillary anterior prosthesis due to alveolar ridge resorption. After removal of old prosthesis, intraoral examination revealed moderate (buccolingually 4 mm) ridge deficiency in missing tooth region, leading to the diagnosis of Class I alveolar ridge defect. One of the reconstruction techniques to overcome this problem might be a technique that combines two types of soft tissue augmentation techniques. The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate the new combined technique of roll flap and combination onlay-interpositional graft utilized to acquire sufficient dimension of recipient area by one time of operation and to present the esthetic improvement of fixed partial denture by using this procedure in case of maxillary anterior localized ridge defect.
