Reinforced concrete (RC) structures have been most widely used because of their good economic efficiency. However, it is very weak in tensile stresses and difficult to control deflection due to the heavy self-weight of concrete. On the other hand, it is generally known that prestressed concrete structures can be the most effective to overcome the demerits of RC structures by using various tendon lay-out and its amount. In the prestressed concrete members, the inflection points of tendons should be placed effectively for the deflection control and the moment reduction. Therefore, in this study, the equations of tendon profiles are derived in terms of polynomials that satisfy essential conditions of tendon geometries such as inflection points and natural curved shapes of tendons placed in continuous members, from which vertical components of prestressing forces can be also calculated. The derived high order polynomial expression for the distributed shape of the upward and downward forces was transformed to an simplified equivalent uniform vertical force in order to improve the applicability in the calculation of member deflection. The influences of vertical forces by tendons to deflection and moment in a continuous slab were also considered depending on the distance from column face to the location of tendons. The applicability of the proposed method was examined by an example of deflection calculation for the cases of slabs with and without tendons, and the efficiency of deflection control by tendons was also quantitatively estimated.
This paper investigates the progressive collapse behavior of 3D steel-framed gravity buildings under fires with a cooling phase. The effect of fire protections and bracing systems on whether, how, and when a gravity building collapses is studied. It is found that whether a building collapses or not depends on the duration of the heating phase, and it may withstand a "short-hot" fire, but collapses under a mild fire or a "long-cool" fire. The collapse time can be conservatively determined by the time when the temperature of steel columns reaches a critical temperature of 550 ℃. It is also found that the application of a higher level of fire protection may prevent the collapse of a building, but may also lead to its collapse in the cooling phase due to the delayed temperature increment in the heated members. The tensile membrane action in a heated slab can be resisted by a tensile ring around its perimeter or by tensile yielding lines extended to the edge of the frame. It is recommended for practical design that hat bracing systems should be arranged on the whole top floor, and a combination of perimeter and internal vertical bracing systems be used to mitigate the fire-induced collapse of gravity buildings. It is also suggested that beam-to-column connections should be designed to resist high tensile forces (up to yielding force) during the cooling phase of a fire.
The adoption of a composite beam system is regarded as a simple but effective solution because it improves the overall stiffness, strength and stability of the structure by welding shear studs. However, welding shear studs poses problems including electric shock and weld defects. Mechanical methods have emerged as an alternative to metallurgical methods for connecting the H-beam and shear connector. Four specimens were tested in order to compare the structural behavior of the proposed composite beams with that of the classical composite beam given the condition of horizontal loading. With the original composite beam (FCB-SB specimen) using stud bolts, hysteresis loops are stable, but its strength decreased with the crashing of the concrete slab around the column. The suggested composite beams using shear connectors also yielded stable hysteresis loops. Consequently, use of the suggested composite beams instead of the original composite beam are recommended.
The study deals with physical modeling of space frame-pile foundation and soil system using finite element models. The superstructure frame is analyzed using complete three-dimensional finite element method where the component of the frame such as slab, beam and columns are descretized using 20 node isoparametric continuum elements. Initially, the frame is analyzed assuming the fixed column bases. Later the pile foundation is worked out separately wherein the simplified models of finite elements such as beam and plate element are used for pile and pile cap, respectively. The non-linear behaviour of soil mass is incorporated by idealizing the soil as non-linear springs using p-y curve along the lines similar to that by Georgiadis et al. (1992). For analysis of pile foundation, the non-linearity of soil via p-y curve approach is incorporated using the incremental approach. The interaction analysis is conducted for the parametric study. The non-linearity of soil is further incorporated using iterative approach, i.e., secant modulus approach, in the interaction analysis. The effect the various parameters of the pile foundation such as spacing in a group and configuration of the pile group is evaluated on the response of superstructure owing to non-linearity of the soil. The response included the displacement at the top of the frame and bending moment in columns. The non-linearity of soil increases the top displacement in the range of 7.8%-16.7%. However, its effect is found very marginal on the absolute maximum moment in columns. The hogging moment decreases by 0.005% while sagging moment increases by 0.02%.

When structural analysis modelling methods of practical fields are investigated, a slab is generally modeled by a finite element mesh using plate elements and a shear wall is modeled using a shell element or wall element for 3-D structural analysis. The point worthy of notice in this practice is that a shear wall is modelled using only one wall or shell element divided by floors and column lines to produce structural models. The modeling method like this can cause analysis errors according to the type of computer programs in use, and these errors reduce the reliability of the analysis results. Therefore, to secure the reliability of structural analysis, studies of the causes of errors and finding reasonable modeling methods are necessary. In this study, the causes of analysis errors according to the modelling methods of a shear wall, which are used in practical fields, were investigated and some considering matters for modelling a shear wall are presented to reduce the analysis errors on these analysis results.

To reduce the story height for high-rise buildings, the TEC Beam is developed as a new composite beam composed of structural tee, precast concrete, stirrup, and site-in-cast reinforced concrete slab. The preliminary test of the proposed system was performed for simple beams and it showed a good behavior. However, for the field application of the system, it is required to develope a steel moment resisting connection using steel brackets on which upper rebars of the TEC BEAM are anchored. In this paper, three types of the proposed system are experimentally investigated. The parameters of the test are as follows: (1) the spacing of transverse bars, (2) the ratio of width of rebar's layer to bracket length. Specimens were classified as semi-rigid full strength by the Eurocode 4. It could be concluded that the proposed moment resisting system shows a good structural behavior and may be applicable in the filed.
This study evaluates the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) flat plate structures relation to the gravity shear ratio. For this purpose, 3 and 7 story framed buildings were designed for gravity loads only. Subsequently, a nonlinear static pushover analysis and a nonlinear time history analysis for the prototype buildings were carried out. In the nonlinear analysis, newly propose analytical slab-column joint model was utilized to capture punching shear failure and fracture mechanism in the analysis. The analytical results showed that seismic performance of RC flat plate frame is strongly influenced by the gravity shear ratio. In particularly, in the RC flat plate frame with a large gravity shear ratio the lateral strength and maximum drift capacity decreased significantly.

In general, RC flat plate frames have been used as a gravity load resisting system(GLRS) in building. This system should be constructed with lateral force resisting system(LFRS) such as shear walls and brace frames. When lateral loads such as earthquakes occur, LFRS undergo displacement by which connected gravity systems experience lateral displacement. Thus, flat plate system designed as GLRS should be predict unbalanced moments and punching failure due to lateral deformation. This study developed an analytical mode for predicting nonlinear behavior of RC slab column connection for the seismic performance evaluation of RC flat plate frames. For verifying the analytical model, the test results of two flat plate specimens having two continous spans with the difference gravity shear ratio($V_g/{\phi}V_c$) were compared with the results of analysis. The developed model can predict the failure modes and punching failures.
The characteristic response of a structure to blast load may be divided into two distinctive phases, namely the direct blast response during which the shock wave effect and localized damage take place, and the post-blast phase whereby progressive collapse may occur. A reliable post-blast analysis depends on a sound understanding of the direct blast effect. Because of the complex loading environment and the stress wave effects, the analysis on the direct effect often necessitates a high fidelity numerical model with coupled fluid (air) and solid subdomains. In such a modelling framework, an appropriate representation of the blast load and the high nonlinearity of the material response is a key to a reliable outcome. This paper presents a series of calibration study on these two important modelling considerations in a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian framework using a hydrocode. The calibration of the simulated blast load is carried out for both free air and internal explosions. The simulation of the extreme dynamic response of concrete components is achieved using an advanced concrete damage model in conjunction with an element erosion scheme. Validation simulations are conducted for two representative scenarios; one involves a concrete slab under internal blast, and the other with a RC column under air blast, with a particular focus on the simulation sensitivity to the mesh size and the erosion criterion.

Information on the distribution characteristics of construction errors is very important to determine the member factors, which are to be introduced in a new Korean design code for reinforced concrete structures. The new design code, which is under development for reinforced concrete structures, is based on the performance design concept. The construction errors of reinforced concrete members are mainly caused by the firmness and dimensional accuracy of forms, the arranging condition of reinforcing bars, the pouring and compaction methods of concrete, the skills of field workers, and the experience of supervisors. To find out the construction errors of reinforced concrete structures already built in Korea, a field survey for cover thickness, effective depth of reinforcement, the thickness of slabs and walls, and the dimension of beams and columns has been performed. Based on the survey, which is the first time in Korea, the analysis results are presented. The measuring methods for the construction errors, which have been established through the laboratory tests, are also presented. In addition, the measured construction errors from the survey are compared with the allowable tolerances in the current domestic and foreign specifications.
