Analytical Study on Discontinuous Displacement in Reinforced Concrete Column-Footing Joint under Earthquake (지진시 철근콘크리트 기둥-기초 접합부의 불연속 변위에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of the elastic behavior of discontinuous displacement in reinforced concrete column-footing joint under earthquake. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The proposed numerical method for hysteretic behavior of discontinuous displacement in reinforced concrete column-footing joint will be verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • This paper presents results from an analytical investigation of the behavior of steel reinforced concrete circular column sections with additional Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) bars. The primary application of this composite section is to relocate the plastic hinge region from the column-footing joint where repair is difficult and expensive. Mainly, the study focuses on the development of the full nominal moment-axial load (M-P) interaction diagrams for hybrid concrete sections, reinforced with steel bars as primary reinforcement, and GFRP as auxiliary control bars. A large parametric study of circular steel reinforced concrete members were undertaken using a purpose-built MATLAB(c) code. The parameters considered were amount, location, dimensions and mechanical properties of steel, GFRP and concrete. The results indicate that the plastic hinge was indeed shifted to a less critical and congested region, thus facilitating cost-effective repair. Moreover, the reinforced concrete steel-GFRP section exhibited high strength and good ductility.

  • Structures are often subject to vehicle collision which can be accidental or terrorist attack. Previous research shows that the damage in major columns may result in progressive collapse of a whole building. This study investigates the performance of a steel column standing on a reinforced concrete footing subjected to a vehicle collision. The size and the axial load of the steel column are determined based on the assumption that it is the first story corner column in a typical three-story building with six meter span length. The finite element model of a eight-ton single unit truck provided by the NCAC (National Crash Analysis Center) is used in the numerical analysis. The finite element analysis is performed using the LS-DYNA, and the results show that the behavior of the column subjected to car impact depends largely on the column-foundation connection detail.

RC circular columns with lap-splice in plastic hinge region are widely used in Korean highway bridges. It is, however, believed that there are not many experimental research works for nonlinear behavior of these columns subjected to earthquake motions. This study has been performed to verify the effect of axial force, lap splice and confinement steel ratio for the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test have been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility and enemy absorption.

In addition, these columns which constructed before the seismic design code have a number of structural deficiencies. It is, however, believed that there are not many experimental research works for nonlinear behavior of these columns subjected to earthquake motions. The object of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the Quasi-static test. Existing reinforced concrete bridge piers were moderate seismically designed in accordance with the conventional provisions of Korea Highway Design Specification. This study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel, confinement steel type and confinement steel ratio far the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility, energy absorption, strength degradation etc.

Behavior of Concrete Columns Confined by Carbon Fiber Sheets under a Constant Axial Force with Reversed Cyclic Lateral Loading (일정축력하의 탄소섬유쉬트 보강기둥의 횡가력시 거동특성에 관한 실험연구)

  • An investigation was conducted into the flexural behavior of earthquake damaged reinforced concrete columns repaired with carbon fiber sheets. Six column specimens were tested to failure under reversed cyclic loading. Two columns were specimens for control with no sheets and tested. These columns were repaired with carbon fiber sheets and retested to evaluate the effect of the confinement of the carbon fiber on the damaged column. Another two columns were repaired and tested with no pre-cyclic loading. The test specimens were designed to model single bent under a constant axial force with reversed cyclic lateral loading. Carbon fiber sheets were used to repair damaged concrete columns in the critically stressed areas near the column footing joint and the physical, mechanical properties of carbon fiber sheets are described. The performance of repaired columns in terms of their hysteretic response is evaluated and compared to those of the original columns. The results indicate that the repaire technique with carbon fiber sheets is highly effective. Both flexural strength and displacement ductility of repaired columns were higher than those of the original columns.
