This paper proposes a Global-Local Analysis Method (GLAM) to assess the progressive collapse of steel framed structures under fire-induced column failure. GLAM obtains the overall structural response by combining dynamic analysis of the heated column (local) with static analysis of the overall structure (global). Test results of two steel frames which explicitly consider the dynamic effect during fire-induced column failure were employed to validate the proposed GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives reasonable predictions to the test frames in terms of both whether to collapse and the displacement verse temperature curves. Besides, several case studies of a two-dimensional (2D) steel frame and a three-dimensional (3D) steel frame with concrete slabs were conducted by using GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives the same collapse predictions to the studied cases with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model. Compared with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model, GLAM saves approximately 70% and 99% CPU time for the cases of 2D and 3D steel frame, respectively. Results also show that the load level of a structure has notable effects on the restraint condition of a heated column in the structure.
This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations on additional fixed-end rotations resulting from the strain penetration of high-strength reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under monotonic loading. The experimental part included the test of 18 interior beam-column connections with straight long steel bars and 24 exterior beam-column connections with hooked and headed steel bars. Rebar strains along the anchorage length were recorded at the yielding and ultimate states. Furthermore, a numerical program was developed to study the effect of strain penetration in beam-column connections. The numerical results showed good agreement with the test results. Finally, 87 simulated specimens were designed with various parameters based on the test specimens. The effect of concrete compressive strength ($f_c$), yield strength ($f_y$), diameter ($d_b$), and anchorage length ($l_{ah}$) of the reinforcement in the beam-column connection was examined through a parametric study. The results indicated that additional fixed-end rotations increased with a decrease in $f_c$ and an increase in $f_y$, $d_b$ and $l_{ah}$. Moreover, the growth rate of additional fixed-end rotations at the yielding state was faster than that at the ultimate state when high-strength steel bars were used.
The objective of this paper is to develop a finite element procedure for predicting the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) confined circular concrete columns and to study the effective parameters of confinement efficiency for helping design of CFRP retrofit technology. The behavior of concrete confined with CFRP is studied using the nonlinear finite element method. In this paper, effects of column size, CFRP volumetric ratio and plain concrete strength are studied. The confined concrete nonlinear constitutive relation, concrete failure criterion and stiffness reduction methodology after concrete cracking or crushing are adopted. First, the finite element model is verified by comparing the numerical solutions of confined concrete with experimental results. Then the effects of column size, CFRP volumetric ratio and plain concrete strength on the peak strength and ductility of the confined concrete are considered. The results of parametric study indicate that the normalized column axial strength increases with increasing CFRP volumetric ratio, but without size effect for columns with the same CFRP volumetric ratio. As the same, the increase in column ductility depends on CFRP volumetric ratio but without size effect for columns with the same CFRP volumetric ratio.
The purpose of this study is to develop an analytic model of the concrete column strengthened with laminated CFS, and to provide a basic guideline for the strengthening design by CFS considering orthotropic properties of laminate. In this study, an analytical stress-strain model of laminated CFS is presented based on Tsai-Hill failure criterion. This model has been implemented in an algorithm which can evaluate the confinement effect of CFS. Through this algorithm, the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete is obtained and compared with experimental results of other studies. Using the constitutive relationships, section analyses of concrete column strengthened with CFS are done, and load-moment and load-curvature interaction curves are obtained. In addition, the strengthening effects of CFS according to various laminated angles are analyzed. Analytical results show that the strengthening effects of the strengthened concrete columns are significantly different in compression, flexure, and ductility according to the laminated ways. In compressive direction of principal stress shows the superiority, where an in flexural strengthening effects, [0/90]s does. In the aspect of ductility, [90]s shows the best effect.
In the present study, design methodologies for effective width of slabs in slab-column connections were evaluated in comparison with the experimental results on the full-scale slab-column connections. The design methodologies are as follows: the methodology proposed by Jacob S. Grossman and the methodology proposed by Choi & Song. The former does not predict the stiffness change of the slab-column connection due to the change in the column section shape and the latter overestimates the stiffness when edge length of the column section in the loading direction is long. Accordingly, the equation to calculate the effective width of slabs should be modified to reflect the effect of the change in the column section shape.
Stone column is one of the soft ground improvement method, which enhances ground conditions through ground water draining, settlement reducing and bearing capacity increasing complexly by using crushed stone instead of sand in general vertical drain methods. In recent, general construction material, sand is in short of supply, because of the unbalance of demand and supply. Also, the bearing capacity improving effect of stone column method is needed in many cases so the bearing capacity estimation is considered as important point. Nevertheless, adequate estimation methods to predict bearing capacity of stone column considering stone column and improving ground behavior reciprocally is not yet prepared. To contribute this situation, bearing capacity behavior of stone column were simulated as numerically on various property cases of crushed stone and surrounded ground. Through the numerical analysis of simulation results, bearing capacity behavior prediction formula was suggested. This formula was verified by comparing the prediction result with in situ test.
The weld quality has always been an important factor affecting the development of exposed CFT column-base joint. In this paper, a new type of exposed RCFST column-base joint is proposed, in which the high strength steel bars (USD 685) are set through the column and reinforced concrete foundation without any base plate and anchor bolts. Three specimens, the varying axial force ratio (0, 0.25 and 0.5), were tested under cyclic loadings. In addition, the bending moment capacity, energy dissipation capacity and deformation capacity of column-base joints were clarified. The experimental results indicated that the axial force ratio increases the stiffness and the bending moment and improves the energy dissipation capacity of column-base joints. This is because a large axial force can limit the slip between steel tubular and infilled concrete effectively. The specimens show stable hysteresis behavior.
This research focused on the hysteretic energy performance of 12 steel moment-resisting frames, which were intentionally designed by three types of design philosophies, strength control design, strength and drift control design, and strong-column and weak-beam control design. The energy performances of three designs were discussed In view of strength increase effect, stiffness increase effect, and strong-column and weak-beam effects. The mean hysteretic energy of the 12 basic systems were statically processed and compared to that of single-degree-of-freedom systems. Hysteretic energy was not always increased with an increase of strength and stiffness in the steel moment-resisting frames. Hysteretic energy between strong-column and weak-beam design and drift control design with the same stiffness was not sensitive each other for these types of mid-rises of steel moment-resisting frames.
In this paper the results of an experimental program devoted to the assessment of the cyclic behaviour of full scale, European type, beam-column subassemblages with welded connections are presented. Six tests (five cyclic and one monotonic) have been carried out on three different series of specimens, encompassing a total of eighteen tests. The three specimen series have been designed with the aim of defining the effect of the column size on the connection behaviour, under different applied loading histories. The tests have evidenced the effect of the column size and panel zone design and of the applied loading history on the cyclic behaviour and failure modes of the connections.
