The sediment collected from KODOS91-1 were studied using X-ray diffraction(SRD) analysis to clarify the composition and vertical distribution of clay minerals. Micropaleontological data(Radiolarians) was applied to identify the changes in post-depositional environment and chemical mechanism leading to the formation of authigenic minerals. The result show that the highest concentration of smectite is occurred in the lower part(Unit II, III) of sediment column and the lowest concentration in the upper part(Unit I) whereas terrestrial minerals, such as illite, kaolinite and quartz, indicate the opposite trends. Radiolarians in the upper part are composed entirely of Quaternary/Tertiary mixtures, whereas in lower sediment units generally revealed the middle Miocene to the Eocene. This may imply that the Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary processes were continuously affected by reworking of older sediments and subsequent resegmentation. The changes of the sediment color, peak pattern of minerals and presence of reworked microfossils at the unit boundaries have been interpreted as evidence of authigenic formation. Mineralogical characteristics of the sediments in study area strongly indicates changes in paleoenvironments through geologic time, including changes in post-depositional conditions by physical processes and chemical mechanisms.
Despite of large demand for high spatial resolution products of aerosol properties from satellite remote sensing, it has been very difficult due to the weak signal by a single pixel and higher noise from clouds. In this study, aerosol retrieval algorithm with the high spatial resolution ($500m{\times}500m$) was developed using Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data during the Korea-US Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) period in May-June, 2016.Currently, conventional GOCI Yonsei aerosol retrieval(YAER) algorithm provides $6km{\times}6km$ spatial resolution product. The algorithm was tested for its best possible resolution of 500 m product based on GOCI YAER version 2 algorithm. With the new additional cloud masking, aerosol optical depth (AOD) is retrieved using the inversion method, aerosol model, and lookup table as in the GOCI YAER algorithm. In some cases, 500 m AOD shows consistent horizontal distribution and magnitude of AOD compared to the 6 km AOD. However, the 500 m AOD has more retrieved pixels than 6 km AOD because of its higher spatial resolution. As a result, the 500 m AOD exists around small clouds and shows finer features of AOD. To validate the accuracy of 500 m AOD, we used dataset from ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sunphotometer over Korea. Even with the spatial resolution of 500 m, 500 m AOD shows the correlation coefficient of 0.76 against AERONET, and the ratio within Expected Error (EE) of 51.1%, which are comparable to the results of 6 km AOD.
The taxa of phytoplankton in the Dongbok reservoir consisted of 6 classes, 9 orders, 4 4 suborders, 21 families, 42 genus, 86 species, 4 varieties and 1 formula; totally 91 t taxa appeared. It contained 3 major groups that is Chlorophyceae 51 taxa(56.0 % the most high rate), Bacillariophyceae 23taxa(25.2%), Cyanophyceae 10taxa(10.9%). The most abundant with 47 taxa was in December, the least with 11 taxa was in March during research every month. The component ratio of biomass each main groups, Bacillariophyceae(51 %, the most h high rate), Cyanophyceae(38.9%), Chlorophyceae(9.8%). The most abundant class at the biomass component ratio were Cyanophyceae which contained 82.6-98.0 % of it in May and September, Chlorophyceae 79.0% in August, and Bacillariophyceae increased continuously, specially in winter and autumn. The seasonal dominant groups were Microcystis aemginosa belong to Cyanophyceae in spring and autumn, some species of Chlorophyceae in summer and Melosira granulata belong to Bacillariophyceae in winter and late autumn. Dominant index ranged from 0.33 to 0.95. The season of the lowest index was autumn and the highest was spring. Species diversity indices ranged from 1.09 to 3.99. The water environmental factors of the Dongbok reservoir were that the values of water temperature ranged between $2.4~28.9^{\circ}C$, pH 7.2~8.3, conductivity 77.0~105.5us/cm, and transparency 1.2~2.8m, also the concentration of dissolved oxygen(DO) ranged of 6.9-14.6mg/L, total nitrogen(T-N) 0.38-1.84mg/L, total phosphorus (T-P) 0.011~0.028mg/L, and chlorophyll-a $7.0~29.9mg/m^3$. In this research the proper temperature of water for algae growth, $15~20^{\circ}C$, was maintained in April. May, November and December 1 The number of species that induced water color were 14 species, that caused taste-and-odor problems were 3 species and that caused filter clogging were 5 species. A Among them, the bloom of Anahaena macrospora that caused odor problem occurred l in May and of Microcystis aeruRinosa and M. lνensenberRii that caused filter clogging in May and September.
To evaluate the biological pollution class, Chl-a concentration and color were examined in 8 stone cultural heritages of Korea from April to June 2007. In the case of Chl-a, it had the range of 16.2 to $136.6{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and for the range of the colors, it came out from green to black. As the result of the evaluation, the Three storied stone pagoda in Mulgeol-ri and the Three storied stone pagoda in Suta Temple both showed class 3 and the other 6 stone cultural heritages showed the classes above 4, proving severe biological pollution. The total of 32 aerial algae taxa were found in 8 stone cultural heritages. Out of the 32 taxa, 16 taxa were found in Cyanophyceae, 13 taxa in Chlorophyceae, and 3 taxa in Bacillariophyceae. The correlation coefficient showed 0.43, as a result of the correlation analysis between Chl-a and the biological pollution class. Two among all the aerial algae taxa, Trebouxia sp, and Chroococcus bituminosus, showed high correlation coefficients of 0.89 and 0.65 with Chl-a, in the correlation analysis. High correlation coefficients from 0.54 to 0.65 were shown in a correlation analysis between the biological pollution class and the aerial algae taxa, which are Chroococcus bituminosus, Aphanocapsa grevillei, Xenococcus acervatus, Chlorella vulgaris, and Synechocystis pevalekii.
In chemical industry plants, the raw material, intermediate and final products can leak from unstable joints of flanges and valves as well as cracks of storage tanks. From the safety and economic standpoints, it is very important to understand whether leaks or not and leakage rate. The OGI(optical gas image) technique can tell gas leakages, but cannot give the leakage rate. Some special OGI devices can show the kind of gas in different color concentration in different darkness. Therefore the research on quantification of OGI is necessary. In this research, we have developed the practical method to quantify OGI of methane leakage. To estimate 3-dimensional gas leakages distribution from 2-dimensional OGI, the Monte Carlo Probability technique was applied. First the number of points in the area of width(2.54 cm) and length(2.54 cm) in OGI was counted. Total no of each experiment was compared with the measured flow rate. The correlation average between total points and measured flow rate was found to be 0.980. Reversely we estimated the leakage rate of OGI by use of the correlation table. The results showed good agreement between the estimation value and the measured value.
The herbal formulation (KH-204) mainly consisted of the fruits of Lycium chinense, Cornus officinalis, Rubus coreanus, Cuscuta chinensis and Schizandra chinensis. We investigated the effects of this herbal formulation on the penile erection and corpus cavernosum of spontaneous hypertensive male Rats (SHR). We used male SHR aged 16 weeks as a model of hypertension. The treatment groups received once a day oral doses KH-204 100 and 300 mg/kg per day for 4 weeks. Distilled water was administered in the control group. To investigate the penile erection, intracavernosal pressure (ICP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were recorded in all groups. We analyzed the distribution of NOS by immunohistochemical staining and the expression of nNOS, eNOS concentration in the isolated corpus cavernosum by western blotting. In the control group, ICP/MAP ratio was $14.9{\pm}1.4%$ after pelvic nerve stimulation. ICP/MAP ratio was markedly increased in the treatment group with KH-204 100, 300 mg/kg, compared with control group. Immunohistochemical staining for NOS showed that eNOS and nNOS was stained as brown color. Compared with the control group, NOS activities of KH-204 100, 300 mg/kg were increased significantly. Also the penile expression levels of nNOS, eNOS in KH-204 100, 300 mg/kg treatment group were more increased significantly than control group by western blotting. This study showed that KH-204 enhances the penile erection and the level of eNOS and nNOS expression of penile corpus cavernosum of male SHR.
Varietal difference in structural and physical characteristics of rice starch and interrelationships between these starch properties and the physicochemical components of rice grains were investigated for twenty four rice varieties, which were considerably different in amylose content, gelatinization temperature and gel consistency, to obtain the basic informations for diversifying the utility of rice grains and for developing various rice cultivars adaptable to rice food processing. Wave length of maximum absorbance for blue color reaction of starch-I$_2$ complex was 520nm for glutinous rice and 560~600nm for nonglutinous rice. The higher amylose rice showed the longer wave length but there was considerable difference of the wave length among rice materials with similar amylose content. Varietal difference in frequency distribution of debranched starch molecules by isoamylase hydrolysis was largest in amylose fraction, the longest fraction(Fr. I), and was next bigger in intermediate fraction(Int.Fr.) and the ratio between short and long glucose chain of amylopectin fraction(Fr. III /Fr. II). The Fr. III / Fr II ratio was higher in glutinous rice than in nonglutinous one but it was considerably different among nonglutinous rice varieties without any connection with amylose content. The lower alkali digestible rice showed the longer half-hydrolysis time in acid solution. Both soft and hard gel rice varieties in gel consistency test revealed significant varietal difference of 50% acid hydrolysis time. The harder rice in gel consistency exhibited the less frequency of short branch fraction of amylopectin (Fr. III) and the higher amylose content. Twenty four rice varieties were cleary classified by upper two principal components contracted from structural or physical traits of rice starch and some physicochemical properties of rice grain by principal component analysis. The 1st and 2nd principal components can be characterized to components related with amylose and amylopectin structure respectively.
This experiment was carried out to collect the Korean red rices and to evaluate them as useful germplasm, 1,113 lines of weedy red rices were collected from farmer's field of the Korean peninsula from 1988 to 1991. The collected red rices were classified into two groups : One was long grain type with length /width ratio of 3.01$\pm$0.11 in paddy rice and the other was short grain type with length /width ratio of 2.28$\pm$0.12. Among the collected red rices 289 lines were long grain type and 824 lines were short. The red rices of long grain type were distributed in Nagdong and Seomjin river vallies of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, and the short ones were distributed all around of the peninsula. Among the collected long grain type red rices, 90.8% was red and 9.2% was white, and among the short grain type 88.8% was red, 10.6% was brown and 0.6% was white in pericarp color. 9.3% of the long grain type and 30.7% of the short grain type of the Korean red rices reacted to phenol solution. In the short grain type, 4.3% was waxy grained, but no waxy line was found in the long grain type. All the long grained Korean red rice showed easy shattering and no awn, however in the short grained red rices, 85.2% showed easy shattering and 49.6% was awned.
Ecological characteristics on habitats and morphological features of the seagrass Zostera caulescens Miki in Korea were examined. The biogeographical distribution of Z. caulescens was confirmed in the south coast of the Korea. Zostera caulescens usually inhabits at the inner bay, where is sheltered from wave action and 3.0 to 6.5 m deep. The sediment in habitats is composed of very fine muddy sand or sandy mud. In morphology, Z. caulescens is easily distinguished from other species of the genus by the formation of vegetative canopy on the top of reproductive stems. The number of longitudinal ribs in testa was 24 revealed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) while the number of ribs in Z. marina has been often reported to be 16-20. Purplish anthocyanin spots were displayed on the surface when the testa was removed. We found that the size and shape of leaf epidermal cells in Z. caulescens were very different from those of Z. marina when the leaf cuticles were removed by maceration which could be useful characters for identifying Zostera species. The leaf of Z. caulescens displays two different casts of color when the fresh plant is closely observed. The margins of leaves appear brighter than the center of leaves due to the thickening by the development of paralleled venation in the middle of leaves. The comparison of two populations of Z. caulescens in Korea showed that they were considerably different in their shoot density and biomass. The shoot density and biomass at Gabae population was $367.3 m^{-2}\;and\;725.7g$ dry wt $m^P{-2}$ respectively, while those at Jukrim population were $112.5m^{-2}\;and\;392.0g\;dry\;wt\;m^{-2}$, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hydrated potato starch on the quality of low-fat ttoekgalbi (Korean traditional patty) packaged in modified atmosphere conditions during storage. The ttoekgalbi was prepared from 53.2% lean beef, 13.9% lean pork, 9.3% pork fat, and 23.6% other ingredients. Two low-fat ttoekgalbi treatments were prepared by substituting pork fat with hydrated potato starch; either by 50% fat replacement (50% FR) or 100% fat replacement (100% FR). Both 50% and 100% FR increased the moisture, crude protein, and decreased fat content, cooking loss, and hardness. For MAP studies, 200 g of ttoekgalbi were placed on the tray and filled with gas composed of 70% $O_2$: 30% $CO_2$ (70% $O_2$-MAP) and 30% $CO_2$: 70% $N_2$ (70% $N_2$-MAP), and were stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 12 d. During the storage time, both 50% and 100% FR showed higher protein deterioration, while no differences were found in CIE $a^*$, CIE $L^*$, lipid oxidation, and bacterial counts in comparison to control. The ttoekgalbi with 70% $O_2$-MAP was more red, lighter in color, and showed higher TBARS values compared with 70% $N_2$-MAP. The meat with 70% $N_2$-MAP showed lower aerobic bacterial counts in control than those with 70% $O_2$-MAP. The lower anaerobic bacterial counts were observed only in 50% FR and 100% FR packed with 70% $N_2$-MAP in comparison with 70% $O_2$-MAP. In conclusion, the fat replacement with hydrated potato starch showed no negative effects on the quality of low fat ttoekgalbi during storage and 70% $N_2$-MAP was better than 70% $O_2$-MAP for low-fat ttoekgalbi packaging.
