TOEFL, TOEIC, TEPS 시험 점수와 대학 수학 능력과의 연관성 연구 (A study on the relationship between the scores of TOEFL, TOEIC and TEPS, and college academic performance)

  • The scores of TOEFL, TOEIC, and TEPS have been increasingly used for many purposes in Korea. In particular, these test scores are being used as a predictor for determining readiness for and success in college work, or as a measure of the testees' overall English proficiency. Nonetheless, studies have rarely proposed that the validity of the test scores is used for either purpose. As a preliminary step to explore the predictive validity of the test scores, we collected the scores of TOEFL, TOEIC, and TEPS from thirty students of a university as well as their cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). The correlations between the test scores and GPAs show that TOEFL will be most likely to have the highest validity coefficient as a predictor for determining success in college work as well as a measure of overall English proficiency. Although this study has a few limitations such as the small number of participants, their homogeneousness as a group, etc., it provides some insight into the use of the three tests for college admissions and measurement of overall English proficiency and suggests need for conducting further validation studies in these areas.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 실시간-비실시간 온라인플랫폼을 통한 역량강화중심 대학영어 교수-학습 모형을 개발하는 것이다. 본 연구에서의 대학영어 교수-학습 모형은 의사소통, 자기주도성, 협동성 등의 역량증진을 위한 딕토글로스 활동을 다양한 온라인플랫폼 기능 활용을 고도화하여 효과적으로 적용하기 위한 것이다. 딕토글로스는 의사소통의 네가지 기능(듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기)을 통합하여 사용하는 언어 교수-학습 활동이다. 본 연구에서의 대학영어 수업은 의사소통 중심 통합적 영어교육에 중점을 두고 있다. 그리고 본 연구에서의 교수-학습 모형은 구성주의 이론에 입각한 온라인기반 영어통합 교수-학습 방법으로서, 각 단계별로 학습자와 교수자의 역할을 제시하였다.

한국인의 영어 발음에 영향을 미치는 개인적 특성 요인 (Personal Factors Affecting Korean Speakers' English Pronunciation)

  • This study examines personal factors that affect Korean speakers' English pronunciation. Personal factors which are examined here are as follows: personality type, cognitive system, motivational orientation type, interest in English, how often they listen to tapes, and academic achievements. Data were collected through MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) Test, Group Embedded Figural Test, and a Questionnaire. The participants consisted of 65 college students. All the results were statistically analyzed: Korean students' personality type and cognitive system are not related with their pronunciation, but motivational orientation type, how often they listen to tapes, academic achievements, and interest in English study are correlated with their pronunciation.

EPIK프로그램 분석: 오리엔테이션 및 교육 프로그램에 VR 활용방안의 가능성을 중점으로 (Investigation of English Program in Korea: Focusing on the possibility of VR use in orientation and training programs)

  • 영어 교육에서 의사소통적 접근 방식을 채택함에 따라 한국 학생과 교사의 의사소통 능력을 향상시키기 위해 1995 년 교육부는 영어 원어민 화자를 모집하여 영어 교사로 활용하는 한국 영어 프로그램(EPIK)을 도입하였다. 이 프로그램을 통하여 영어를 모국어로 사용하는 7개 나라에서 모집된 영어 원어민 교사들은 한국의 공립학교에서 한국인 영어교사와 함께 영어를 가르치고 있다. 하지만 이 프로그램의 효율성에 대해 많은 의문이 제기되어 왔다. 따라서 이 논문을 통해 EPIK 프로그램에 대한 조사를 통해 EPIK의 효과와 목표로 하는 프로그램의 현재 상태, 문제점 및 방향을 탐색하고자 한다. 끝으로 본 논문은 EPIK프로그램의 활용성을 높이기 위해 오리엔테이션 및 교육훈련 프로그램에서 VR 사용가능성을 포함한 몇 가지 가능한 대책과 제안을 제시하고자 한다.

충남.경남지역 대학생들의 영어발음과 청해능력의 상관관계에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study of Co-relation between English Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension of Korean College Students in Chungnam and Gyungnam Provinces)

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the relationship between English pronunciation and listening comprehension of English diphthongs and low vowels of Korean college students from the Chungnam and Gyungnam provinces. Of 22 test sentences for listening comprehension, 15 sentences were recorded by native speakers and seven sentences were edited from Springboard by Oxford University Press. For the listening comprehension test, 90 subjects from two groups, Chungnam dialect speakers and Gyungnam dialect speakers, were selected. They listened to 22 sentences produced by audio cassette tape and completed a cloze exercise. By the results of this experiment, we observed that Korean collegians of Gyungnam province showed a better listening comprehension of words including front low vowels when they preceded voiced sounds than those of Chungnam province. When the back low vowel came in an open syllable, we also recognized the same result; Gyungnam province collegians showed better listening comprehension of words including back low vowels than those of Chungnam province. As the results of Hee-Suk Park & Jung-Soak Kim(2003) showed that Gyungnam province collegians pronounced the English low vowels longer than Chungnam province collegians, we discovered that there was a positive relation between English pronunciation and listening comprehension, especially in Gyungnam province collegians. However regarding words including English diphthongs we discovered almost no relation between English pronunciation and listening comprehension.

대학생들의 영어모음 학습 전후의 발화와 지각 (Production and Perception of English Vowels by College Students Before and After Lessons)

  • English vowels are difficult to teach and learn because both teachers and learners cannot show or see shapes of vocal tract inside their own mouth cavities. The aim of this study is to examine what kind of changes occur in production and perception of English vowels by college students before and after lessons in order to provide fundamental materials for teaching students English vowels. Fifteen volunteer female students attending an English phonetics course participated in the lessons for one and half a month period. Formant values of vowels produced and perceived before and after the lessons were obtained using Flying Popcorn and Praat. Results showed that a produced vowel space after the lessons was greater than that before the lessons with no significant difference. Distances between some adjacent corner vowels were too close to be distinguished. Secondly, perceived vowels before and after the lessons were almost the same. Here again, some adjacent vowels were closely spaced. Thirdly, three groups which were divided by the length of the distance between the vowel /i-${\ae}$/ showed similar patterns in their perception and production. Generally the vowel space expanded from [u] to [${\ae}$]. The author concluded that there was no drastic improvement of vowel perception and production within a short period of time. Further studies would be desirable to examine how successful any long-term English vowel lessons would be and which methods should be taken to evaluate students' achievements proposed here.

대학 교양영어 소집단 협동학습이 영어독해력, 영어읽기동기, 협동학습인식에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of College-Language Small Group Cooperative Learning on English Reading Comprehension, English Reading Motivation and Cooperative Learning Awareness)

  • 본 연구 목적은 대학 교양영어 수업에 활용 가능한 소집단 협동학습 수업 프로그램을 적용하여 소집단 협동학습이 영어 독해력과 영어 읽기동기에 미치는 영향과 소집단 협동학습 인식변화를 분석하는데 있다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해, 충청북도의 4년제 종합대학교의 필수 교양영어 수업에 참여한 신입생 62명을 연구대상으로 2019년 9월 2일에서 12월 13일까지 실험반(34명)은 협동학습을 기반으로 한 맞춤식 소집단 협동학습으로 수업을 진행하고, 통제반(28명)은 전형적인 강의식 수업으로 진행하였다. 학습자들의 영어 능력은 학업 숙달도 영역을 영어 독해력으로, 정의적 영역은 영어 읽기 동기로 나누어 실험하였으며 실험 전 학습자들의 영어 독해력은 국가 수준 교육 성취도 평가문제를 발췌하여 측정하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 소집단 협동학습을 적용한 집단의 영어 독해력 점수와 소집단 협동학습을 적용하지 않은 집단의 영어독해력 점수는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 둘째, 소집단 협동학습을 적용한 집단의 영어 읽기동기 점수와 적용하지 않은 집단의 영어 읽기동기점수는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 셋째, 소집단 협동학습을 적용한 집단의 인식변화가 실험 전과 실험 후에 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 대학 교양영어 수업 시 대학생들 간의 협동학습을 통해 영어 독해력, 영어 읽기동기, 협동학습 인식이 상승했으며, 이를 통한 자아정체성, 자신감 등에 긍정적 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.

대학생들의 3D 가상현실을 이용한 채팅의 영어학습 효과

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of 3D avatar-based Virtual Reality chatting on college students' English learning achievement. Forty college sophomore students participated at this study and the research lesson continued for 8 weeks. They were administered to take a pretest to evaluate their vocabulary knowledge and writing skills. Their progress was assessed on the basis of midterm. Finally, a post-questionnaire was administered to measure their interest and understanding toward their learning experience in 3D avatar-based Virtual chatting. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the control group and experimental group with respect to their midterm scores and writing. The result of the post-survey indicated the interest of English was statistically higher than the understanding of English.

Empowering Intercultural Communicative Competence through Metacognitive Reading Strategy

  • This study aims to propose using English reading strategies to enhance Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) for EFL learners. The study recruited college-level participants who were enrolled in a general English reading course (N=30) and administrated the surveys with a Repeated Measures Design (RMD). In the survey, an intercultural sensitivity scale and metacognitive reading strategies inventory were conducted for comparison. During the instruction, participants were asked to use the R.I.D.E.R. (i.e. Read, Image, Describe, Evaluate, and Repeat) strategy for visualization of text, which is aimed at facilitating the use of metacognitive reading strategies. In the results, participants showed a statistically significant increase both in the intercultural sensitivity level and the use of metacognitive reading strategies after the practice of R.I.D.E.R for one semester. Further analysis was appended to the results by the correlation and regression analysis, and proposed that participants benefit their development of intercultural sensitivity from the use of metacognitive reading strategies. Therefore, the study suggests that implementing metacognitive reading strategies facilitates college EFL readers to increase their cultural sensitivity, which empowers ICC through English reading (176words).

Research on Keyword-Overlap Similarity Algorithm Optimization in Short English Text Based on Lexical Chunk Theory

  • Short-text similarity calculation is one of the hot issues in natural language processing research. The conventional keyword-overlap similarity algorithms merely consider the lexical item information and neglect the effect of the word order. And some of its optimized algorithms combine the word order, but the weights are hard to be determined. In the paper, viewing the keyword-overlap similarity algorithm, the short English text similarity algorithm based on lexical chunk theory (LC-SETSA) is proposed, which introduces the lexical chunk theory existing in cognitive psychology category into the short English text similarity calculation for the first time. The lexical chunks are applied to segment short English texts, and the segmentation results demonstrate the semantic connotation and the fixed word order of the lexical chunks, and then the overlap similarity of the lexical chunks is calculated accordingly. Finally, the comparative experiments are carried out, and the experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm of the paper is feasible, stable, and effective to a large extent.
