In this study, the characteristics of turbulent flow and collection efficiency for an one-stage electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with slit type collecting electrode for urban railway underground tunnels were obtained using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial code FLUENT 6.3 and lab-scale experiments. The electrostatic precipitator was operated under high gas velocity(3~12m/s). Five different designs of collecting electrode, flat plate-type and a slit-type of 3mm, 5mm, 7mm and 10mm slit width and four various gas velocity(3, 6, 9, and 12m/s) were used and applied. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model in CFD commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for flow simulation. The flow simulation results showed that the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was higher than slit-type under all gas velocity conditions and also the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was increased continuously, but in case of slit-type was maintained at constant range. And, the turbulent intensity was decreased according to increasing of slit width. The experimental results showed that the collection efficiency of slit-type was higher than flat plate-type under all gas velocity conditions. And, over 6m/s gas velocity condition, the collection efficiency of 5mm and 7mm was highest, when compared to 3mm and 10mm.
The transport of charged particles in electrostatic precipitator is investigated by Eulerian numerical analysis. Collection efficiencies are calculated using various combinations of the assumptions about flow field, turbulent diffusivity and boundary condition at collecting electrode. The characteristics of calculated collection efficiencies are compared with the trends of published experimental results. It is found that the collection efficiency for the case using nonuniform turbulent flow field, nonuniform turbulent diffusivity and zero concentration boundary condition at collecting electrode is the most suitable for the prediction of collection efficiency of electrostatic precipitator.

The Electrostatic Precipitator is one of the most favorable device of particulate control systems because of the relatively higher collection efficiency and easier operation/maintenance. However, it requires very high initial coat especially for discharging electrodes and collecting plates. In dealing with such problems, development of optimum design can be one of the solutions. In this study, a bench-scale electrostatic precipitator was operated in terms of collection area and corona power, and its performances were analyzed focusing on collection efficiency. A result of this study, a more advanced approach for designing cost-effective precipitator by promoting corona power at a minimized collection area was proposed.
This paper describes performance characteristics of a centrifugal fan having a different volute casing. The centrifugal fan has a backward blade type, and is used in a refuse collecting system. The flow characteristics inside the components are analyzed by three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis, and also compared to the results by experiments. Distributions of pressure and efficiency obtained by numerical simulation has a good agreement with the experimental results. Throughout the numerical simulation of the centrifugal fan, a fan efficiency is increased by decreasing local losses in the blade passage. It is found that the fan efficiency is enhanced by decreasing the distance between the shroud of a impeller and casing. Detailed flow analysis is also analyzed and discussed using the results obtained by numerical simulation.
We have investigated the operating characteristics of $1,600m^2$ large-scale solar thermal system installed in an eco-friendly energy town in Chungbuk Innovation City. The operation criteria of the collecting pump and storage pump were different from the existing standard, and it was confirmed that each pump works well according to the changed criteria. Based on the data of the representative day, the daily collecting heat (efficiency) and the production (storing) heat (efficiency) were estimated. It was confirmed that the daily collecting heat (efficiency) of the flat plate type was higher than that of the evacuated tube type, but the useful heat production was more in evacuated tube type collector.
The tangential and axial cyclones were fabricated using a 3D printer and the total collecting efficiency, cut-diameter, and pressure drop characteristics of the two types of cyclones with the same inlet area were investigated experimentally. The results show that the total collecting efficiency tends to increase as the inlet velocity increases. However, at a 20m/s condition of the tangential cyclone, the collected particles were re-entrained to the ascending vortex flow, resulting in a decrease of the total collecting efficiency. In the axial cyclone, the cross-sectional area is designed to increase at the inlet and the velocity is reduced, so that the re-entrainment effect does not appear in this study. The pressure loss of the tangential cyclone was larger than that of the axial cyclone. The cut-diameter tends to decrease with increasing the inlet velocity in two types of cyclones, except for the 20m/s condition of the tangential cyclone.

This study aimed to develop a new dust collecting system equipped with an activated carbon (A.C.) coated electrode. Before fabrication, pre-treatment of A.C. was performed to remove metal ions within the A.C. to enlarge its specific surface area. Then, pre-treated A.C., black carbon, polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), and methanol were mixed to make a gel compound, which was coated onto aluminum plates to fabricate electrodes. The optimal mixing ratio of A.C., black carbon, PVAc, and methanol was found to be 10 g: 2 g: 3 g: 20 mL. After fabrication, the electrodes were used in the batch-type experiment for $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ removal. The reduction rates of the gases were high at the beginning and slowly reduced with time. Dust collection experiments were conducted in continuous flow, with various voltages applied. Compared to 5 kV, dust removal efficiency was 1.5 times higher when 10 kV was applied. Increasing the number of electrodes applied also increased the collecting efficiency. The correlation coefficient between actual collecting efficiency and trend line was higher than 99%. Consequently, the novel dust collection system equipped with A.C. coated electrode appears to be a promising substitute for existing dust-control devices.
Objectives: In this study, a nine-stage cascade impactor was used to collect dust, and the concentration of $PM_{2.1}$ & $PM_{10}$ and alveolar deposition ratio were investigated. Methods: This study was conducted at Kunsan National University from May to June 2016. A nine-stage Cascade Impactor was used to analyze the concentrations of fine and ultrafine dust and to estimate the alveolar deposition rate by particle size of atmospheric dust particles. The pore size of each stage of the collector used in this study gradually increased from F to 0, with the F-stage as the last stage. Results: The mass fraction of PM showed a bimodal distribution divided into $PM_{2.1}$ & $PM_{10}$ based on $2.1-3.1{\mu}m$. The average mass fraction of particulate matter in the range of $2.1-3.1{\mu}m$ was 44%, and the area occupied by $PM_{2.1}$ was similar. Therefore, the Gunsan area is considered to be a region where there are similar effects from anthropogenic and natural sources. Conclusion: Dust collecting efficiency increased with the stage of collecting fine dust, and the efficiency of collection was very low at the stage of collecting ultra-fine dust. The seasonal overall efficiency of the Cascade Impactor was 44% in spring and 37.4% in summer, and the average overall efficiency was 40.7%. The alveolar deposition rate of $PM_{2.1}/PM_{10}$ during the sampling period was estimated to be about 75% deposited in the alveoli.
Traditionally, so-called "industrial waste gases", such ad exhaust from boilers at industrial installations and a large quantity of soot discharged from power station, before their release into the atmosphere, have been on occasion subjected to an air cleaning process to remove fine particles that may pollute the atmosphere (such as mist and dust containing various powdery or oily substances and moisture from industrial waste gases). The release of industrial waste gases containing these particles directly into the atmosphere poses a serious threat to the earth environment; and recovery of these noxious substances is required by law in some countries and local governments. in urban areas, air pollution from automobile exhaust and others creates a serious condition. Some homes are equipped with and use indoor air purifiers. In many of the kitchens of restaurants, smoke generated during cooking and otherwise contaminated air are cleansed by air purifiers before being released outside or recycled inside. For the dust collecting devices to recover the fine particles contained in contaminated air, the cause for air pollution and how to purify air, many types based on various principles are known. Specifically, classified based on theories of particle collection, filtration, gravity, inertia, centrifugation, electricity, and cleaning types are cited as available processes. Among them, an appropriate type is selected according to the size or type of fine particles to be collected and conditions for installation. For the efficiency of dust collection, a filtration system (by using bag filters and others) and electric system are particularly outstanding and are therefore used widely in various areas of industry. In this research, rotary type high performance oil mist and smoke collecting system with self auto cleaning device equipped with the cleaning fluid spraying section is investigated.
