  • In this paper, three-dimensional finite element analysis of screw rolling process of a long shaft bolt is conducted by using a rigid-plastic finite element method based metal forming simulator AFDEX 3D. A whole sequence of cold forming processes of a long shaft bolt composed of forging and screw rolling processes is simulated to reveal the mechanism of screw formation. A mesh density control function is applied near the major plastic deformation region to achieve computational efficiency.

  • Excessive wavy surfaces formed by a cold or hot-rolling process in a thin plate degrade the value of the plate significantly, which is called flatness problem in the industry. It is a result of post-buckling due to the residual stress caused by the rolling process. A unique difficulty of the problem as a buckling problem is that the buckling length is not given but has to be found. a new approach is developed to solve the flatness problem by extending a classic post-buckling analysis method based on the energy principle. The approach determines the buckling length and amplitude. The new solution approach can be used to determine the condition for the maximum rolling production that does not cause the flatness problem.

  • The influence of rolling draughts on the formation of through-thickness textures in aluminum 5000X sheet was investigated by X-ray texture measurements and microstructure observations. In order to intensify the deformation inhomogeneities, cold rolling was performed without lubrication. Applying a large draught gave rise to the formation of the shear texture at the surface, whereas a normal plane strain testure formed at the surface after deformation with a small draught. The orientation density along the $\beta$-fiber orientations which developed in the center layer of the rolled specimen was also dependent on the strain gradients in a roll gap. Upon annealing, the deformed substructure of sample surfaces was transformed into a fine grained recrystallized microsturcture through extended recovery reaction. However, coarse grains developed after the discontinuous recrystallization which gave rise to the development of the Cube-texture.

  • Sandwich sheet samples comprising AA1050/AA1050/AA1050, AA3003/AA1050/AA3003, AA3003 AA3003 AA3003. AA1050/AA3003/AA1050, SUS430/AA3003/SUS430, AA3003/SUS430/AA3003 and SUS430/SUS430/SUS430 were cold rolled in order to clarify the evolution of strain states md textures in the sandwich samples. To investigate the effect of stacking sequences of the samples on strain and texture, the relative contribution of each layer to the total reduction was measured and textures of the mid-layer sheet of sandwich samples were determined.

  • In order to improve the sheet formability of the ferritic stainless steel, the through-thickness textures of the recrystallized sample was modified by means of a thermomechanical treatment. An annealing process between the cold rolling reductions modified the preferred orientations throughout the thickness, which resulted in the modification of the final cold rolling texture as well as the final recrystallization texture. With the help of the modification of the recrystallization texture by the intermediate annealing, improvement of the sheet formability, i.e. an increase of the Lankford value.

  • Flatness of strip at aluminum cold rolling is one of the important quality parameters of rolled products.   • A hot press method was used to create the optimal fabrication condition for a Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) composite. The bonding strength between the matrix and the reinforcement within the SMA composite by the hot press method was more increased by cold rolling. In this study, the objective was to develop an on-line monitoring system in order to prevent the crack initiation and propagation by shape memory effect in SMA composite. Shape memory effect was used to prevent the SMA composite from crack propagation. For this system an optimal AE parameter should be determined according to the degree of damage and crack initiation. When the SMA composite was heated by the plate heater attached at the composite, the propagating cracks could be controlled by the compressive force of SMA.

  • The decrease in surface roughness of work roll and steel strip in cold rolling of low carbon steel strip has been investigated by working distance, materials, total separating force and total reduction ratio. The main results are as follows; For the same lubricating conditions. 1) The changing of surface roughness of steel strip were similar to work roll. The transcription ratio is in inverse proportion to the carbon content of steel strip. 2) The surface roughness of steel strip is hardly change according to changing of total separating force and total reduction ration. 3) The wear of work rolls surface is more rapid in that case of continuous casted steel strip than ingot casted steel strip. The aluminium content dull powder adhere on the rolls surface, and so. It makes the mirror surface of work roll accelerate.

  • The troubles such as slipping, pinching and other behaviors in the service of cold rolling mills often induce thermal shock crack on the surface of work roll, and considerably reduce their service lives. In order to evaluate thermal shock resistibility we use thermal shock tester generating frictional heat caused by a rotating disc contacting with test specimens. Thermal shock produces two heat affected layers below the roll surface, one is rehardened layer and the other is succeeding tempered layer. The maximum depth of crack occurred in a thermal shocked area is a criterion for the thermal shock resistibility. This paper describes on the investigation to the influence of hardness and residual stress.

  • When the metal sheet is subjected to the housing surface for fitting and insulating from harsh surroundings like fluid ingression or hot steam, both strength and formability have to be equally considered. In this regard, the main aim of this study is to design an apparatus of cost-effectively producing flexible fluted band with increasing the formability of embossed stainless steel sheet, which is utilized as a thermal insulation metal for housing ship engine exhauster. Designed to fabricate a maximum sheet width of 700 mm, this new apparatus consists of upper roll made of hard urethane and the female-etched lower roll made of SKD11, have a producing capacity up to 1-meter homogeneously embossed sheet for just 60 seconds. This machine is devised for the maximum operating efficiency from original sheet handling to machine setting. The embossing properties are characterized by 3-D profiling. After embossing plain metal sheet, both yield strength and elongation properties are improved simultaneously, indicating the effectiveness of the newly designed apparatus.
