고함수비를 가진 준설토의 압밀특성 (Consolidation Characteristics of Dredged Soil with High Water Content)

  • Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe Cell Apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 1 remolding clay of water content 56% and 4 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 120%, 133% and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index and consolidation coefficient have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a consolidation coefficient have been proposed with the field water content.

  • The constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test has been widely used to evaluate consolidation characteristics of soils instead of the standard Incremental Loading Test. In practical problems, after the ground improvement, the condition of the soil is over-consolidated. Therefore, it is important to determine the recompression indices and the coefficient of consolidation(or the coefficient of swelling) of unloading-reloading cycle to predict the settlement behavior. However, since standard testing procedures or studies related with strain rate are insufficient especially in unloading-reloading cycle, it is difficult to predict the settlement field behavior accurately from the CRS consolidation test results in spite of its lots of strengths. The several CRS consolidation tests were performed changing the unloading strain rate from 0.2%/hr to 20%/hr with vertical drainage condition using the reconstituted kaolinite sample. For the reconstituted kaolinite sample in CRS consolidation test, the recompression indices are insensitive to the strain rate. It is revealed that the coefficient of consolidation of reloading is affected by the developed pore pressure during unloading. Additionally, the test should be conducted in the positive pore pressure ratio range (3~15%) to obtain the reasonable coefficient of consolidation in the whole range(loading, unloading and reloading).

  • To investigate the effect of sample size on coefficient of consolidation of non-homogeneous soil, the result of a large size consolidation test using a huge undisturbed sample with $1200mm(D){\times}2000mm(H)$ in dimension is compared with that of oedometer test using undisturbed small sample. In addition, test results are compared with those of same test using remold sample. Experimental results show that, due to the lump of sand/silt was mixed in sample, the coefficient of consolidation of undisturbed samples have a difference for each tests. Whereas, the difference of coefficient of consolidation between remolded large and small samples is not found. Because sample size affects the test results, sample must be carefully selected for non-homogeneous soil.

  • This paper is on determination method of preconsolidation pressure and consolidation coefficient using Kores University Calibration Chamber System(KUCCS). High-quality, large-size cohesive soil specimen was prepared by using two-stage slurry consolidation technique, which has many advantage for research and calibration purpose. The result from consolidation stage in KUCCS was compared with results of oedometer test. The results by Casagrcnde method gave very good agreement with preconsolidation pressure in slurry consolidometer. And, the predicted consolidation coefficient by log t method showed agreement with the experimental results in KUCCS.

이탄의 장기압밀특성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Long-term Consolidation Characteristics of Peats)

  • This study aims at scrutinizing the long4errn consolidation characteristics of peats sampled at three different regions of Chonbuk province. The standard consolidation test and the single load consolidation test were performed about these samples and especially in case of the latter the loading period was 350 days. The main condusions analyzed are as follows. 1. Void ratio showed much greater values than that of the general clay and was decresed greatly according to the increase of the load. 2. In case of the relationship between the sefflement and the long-term settlement time the rate of settlement increment became great according to the increase of the load step and the long4erm settlement became linely proportional to the logarithm of time alter 10 minutes. 3. The linear correlation was showed between the long4erm settlement time and the void ratio and therefore equations by regression analysis were derived in order to estimate the long-term settlement The slope of straight lines increased according th the increase of the load step and secondary consolidation coefficients ranged from 0.04-0.27. 4. The secondary consolidation coeffcient became linealy proportional to the compression index and the ratio of Ca to CC was 0.072. 5. The period required in ending the primary consolidation was about 10 minutes and alter that the secondary consolidation coefficient appeared to have constant value. Therefore the secondary consolidation coefficient was judged to be used as a significant factor in estimating the long4erm settlement. 6. In case of the single load consolidation test the secondary consolidation coefficient showed the tendancy increasing according to the increase of the consolidation pressure.

  • It has been known that Terzaghi's consolidation theory is not well consistent with the consolidation phenomenon on the soft clay ground, but this theory has still been adopted normally in practice because there is no method for estimating the consolidation settlement and rate easier than Terzaghi's theory. It is impossible to map whole part of consolidation settlement vs time curve to the curve of Terzaghi'z average degree of consolidation. If the primary consolidation and the secondary compression are happened same time, it would be useless of trying to find the end of primary consolidation, but it is needed for using Terzaghi's theory that the end of consolidation is determined to the time of beginning consistency between the final settlement analyzed with curve fitting and the experimented consolidation settlement.

  • 준설토의 침강 및 자중압밀 특성에 대한 세립분 함유량의 영향에 대해 분석하기 위하여 세립분 함유량을 각각 달리한 실내 자중압밀 시험을 수행하였다. 준설토에 대한 실내시험 결과에서 실내자중압밀 시험으로부터 얻어진 침강압밀계수(Cs)는 함수비와 관계가 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 또한 침강압밀계수가 세립분 함유량에 의존적이라는 사실 역시 알 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는, 수행한 실내 자중압밀 시험결과를 바탕으로 세립분 함유량과 침강압밀계수와의 관계를 제안하였으며 이를 이용하여 차후에 세립분 함유량을 이용하여 침강압밀계수를 추정할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

PCPT 소산결과를 이용한 압밀해석 (Direct Application of CPTu Result for Consolidation Analysis)

  • In this study, a method to predict the consolidation behavior of soft clays and marine clays was developed by combining the equation of Terzaghi's 1-dimensional consolidation and CPTu dissipation. The special attention was given to the consolidation anisotropy due to the difference between 1-D consolidation and radial consolidation of CPTu dissipation. The analysis combining two equations enables direct application of CPTu results. And above all it doesn't require to sample undisturbed specimens and determine consolidation coefficient which is both costly and time consuming and often contains measuring error. It is also advantageous that CPTu test can be carried out any position and any depth. Clays typically have a greater horizontal permeability, $k_h$, than vertical permeability, $k_v$, and the coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction is generally higher than the vertical direction. Various data of horizontal and vertical consolidation coefficient ratio were collected and analyzed to develop and verify the method.

  • The research effort has been focused on better calculation methods for the coefficient of consolidation under the theory of one dimensional consolidation. This research has been made available to engineers in the form of the computer program COMCv. The following conclusions can be drawn from the result of the engineering analysis, programming, and field observations. 1.Performing comparative study on six mehods(Taylor, Casagrande, Sivaram & Swamee,Su, Cour, and Scott) which can find out the coefficient of consolidation, the computer program COMCv is developed for each method. 2.Comparing the observed settlement and computed one in use of the coefficient of consolidation computed with COMCv, the result by the method of Sivaram & Swamee, Taylor, and Su is closer to the observed settlement.

  • Despite of the simple equipment and operation, DMT has been widely used to obtain various soil parameters and those parameters have been successfully applied to geotechnical design practice. Among them, the estimation of horizontal coefficient of consolidation is so useful that many researchs recently have been carried out. However, simulation of the penetration of the DMT blade is complex due to the inherent difficulty on analyzing a plane strain deformation of the soil around blade. Therefore, empirical and semi-empirical methods that use the theoretical solution developed fur piezocone with some assumptions have been used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation from Dilatometer dissipation test. In this paper, coefficients of consolidation c$\_$h/ which were obtained using equivalent radius that is same area with the DMT blade and optimization technique are compared with those obtained from Oedometer test and other interpretation methods. It was found that a new method used in this study can give more precise horizontal coefficient of consolidation than other methods do.
