  • Drag reduction on vehicles are the main concern for the body shape designers in order to lower the fuel consumption rate and to aid the driving stability. The drag of bluff bodies like transportation vehicles is mostly pressure drag due to the flow separation, which can be minimized by controlling the location and size of the separation bubble. In the present study, the TURBO-3D code is incorporated with optimal algorithm based on analytical approximation method to obtain an optimal afterbody shape of the MIRA Model corresponding to the lowest drag coefficient. For this purpose three mutually independent afterbody angles are chosen as design variables, while the drag coefficient is chosen as an objective function. It is demonstrated in the present study that an optimal body shape having the lowest drag coefficient which is about 6% lower than that of the original shape has been successfully obtained within number of iterations of tile optimal design loop.

  • n general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.

  • Plate that have cutout inner bottom and girder and floor etc. in hull construction absence is used much, and this is strength in case must be situated, but establish in region that high stress interacts sometimes fatally in region that there is no big problem usually by purpose of weight reduction, a person and change of freight, piping etc.. Because cutout's existence gnaws in this place, and, elastic buckling strength by load causes large effect in ultimate strength. Therefore, perforated plate elastic buckling strength and ultimate strength is one of important design criteria which must examine when decide structural elements size at early structure design step of ship. Therefore, and, reasonable elastic buckling strength about perforated plate need design ultimate strength. Calculated ultimate strength change several aspect ratioes and cutout's dimension, and thickness in this investigation. Used program applied ANSYS F.E.M code based on finite element method.

  • The results of a large-scale study to determine the effects of epoxy coating on the bond strength between deformed reinforcement and concrete are descrebed. Tests include beam-end specimens containing No. 5(16mm), No. 6 (19mm), No. 8(25mm), No. 11(32mm) bars with average coating thicknesses ranging from 3 to 17 mils(0.08-0.43mm). Three deformation patterns are evaluated. Specimens with covers of 1, 2, and 3 bar deameters are studied. Both top-cast and bottom-cast bars are tested. Epoxy coatings are found to significantly reduce bond strength. The severity of that reduction is a function of deformation pattern, bar size, and coating thickness. Design recommendations based on these observations differ from the modifications to the 1989 ACI Building Code.

  • In this letter, a small-loop antenna for a mobile UHF RFID device is proposed. To achieve size reduction, a ferrite sheet optimized for a 900 MHz band is applied. The overall dimensions of the antenna are $46mm{\times}35mm{\times}0.24mm$, and it has a bandwidth of 45 MHz with a return loss of less than -6 dB. The proposed antenna satisfies near and far field UHF EPC global frequency band communications (902-928 MHz).

  • This paper focuses on the DSP implementation of an HMM-based speech recognizer that can handle several hundred words of vocabulary size as well as speaker independency. First, we develop an HMM-based speech recognition system on the PC that operates on the frame basis with parallel processing of feature extraction and Viterbi decoding to make the processing delay as small as possible. Many techniques such as linear discriminant analysis, state-based Gaussian selection, and phonetic tied mixture model are employed for reduction of computational burden and memory size. The system is then properly optimized and compiled on the TMS320C6711 DSP for real-time operation. The implemented system uses 486kbytes of memory for data and acoustic models, and 24.5kbytes for program code. Maximum required time of 29.2ms for processing a frame of 32ms of speech validates real-time operation of the implemented system.

  • This paper describes a multi-mode LDPC decoder which supports three block lengths(648, 1296, 1944) and four code rates(1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6) of IEEE 802.11n WLAN standard. To minimize hardware complexity, it adopts a block-serial (partially parallel) architecture based on the layered decoding scheme. A novel memory reduction technique devised using the min-sum decoding algorithm reduces the size of check-node memory by 47% as compared to conventional method. The designed LDPC decoder is verified by FPGA implementation, and synthesized with a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. It has 219,100 gates and 45,036 bits RAM, and the estimated throughput is about 164~212 Mbps at 50 MHz@2.5v.

  • This paper presents a novel photonic bandgap (PBG) structure for size reduction and linearity improvement in power amplifier. The proposed structure is a two-dimensional (2-D) periodic lattice patterned on a dielectric slab that does not require nonplanar fabrication process. Throughout the experi-mental results, this structure has more broad stopband and high suppression performance than conventional three cell PBG and distorted uniplanar compact-PBG (DUC-PBG). This new PBG structure can be applied with power amplifier for linearity improvement. The 3rd intermodulation distortion (IMD3) of the power amplifier using new PBG structure is -36.16 dBc for (code division multiple access) CDMA applications. Compared with power amplifier without the proposed PBG structure, improved IMD3 is -13.49 dBc.

  • We examined the variation of percent depth dose (PDD) curves for 10 MV X-rays in the presence of magnetic fields. The EGS4 Monte Carlo code was applied and modified to take account of the effect of electron deflection under magnetic field was used. We defined and tested DI (dose improvement) and DR (dose reduction) to describe variation of PDD curves under various magnetic fields. For a magnetic field of 3 T applied at the depth region of 5-10 cm and field size of 10${\times}$10 $\textrm{cm}^2$, the DI is 1.56 (56% improvement) and DR is 0.68 (32% reduction). We explained the results from the Lorentz law and the concept of electron equilibrium. We suggested that the dose optimization in radiotherapy can be achieved from using the characteristics of dose distributions under magnetic fields.
