High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating of nano size WC-Co powder (nWC-Co) has been studied as one of the most promising candidate for the possible replacement of the traditional hard plating in some area which causes environmental and health problems. nWC-Co powder was coated on Inconel 718 substrates by HVOF technique. The optimal coating process obtained from the best surface properties such as hardness and porosity is the process of oxygen flow rate (FR) 38 FMR, hydrogen FR 57 FMR and feed rate 35 g/min at spray distance 6 inch for both surface temperature $25^{\circ}C\;and\;500^{\circ}C$. In coating process a small portion of hard WC decomposes to less hard $W_2C$, W and C at the temperature higher than its decomposition temperature $1,250^{\circ}C$ resulting in hardness decrease and porosity increase. Friction coefficient increases with increasing coating surface temperature from 0.55-0.64 at $25^{\circ}C$ to 0.65-0.76 at $500^{\circ}C$ due to the increase of adhesion between coating and counter sliding surface. Hardness of nWC-Co is higher or comparable to those of other hard coatings, such as $Al_2O_3,\;Cr,\;Cr_2O_3$ and HVOF Tribaloy 400 (T400). This shows that nWC-Co is recommendable for durability improvement coating on machine components such as high speed spindle.
If gas is leaking out of gas pipelines, it could cause a huge explosion. Accordingly, it is important to ensure the integrity of gas pipelines. Traditionally, over the years, gas-operating companies have used the ILI system, which is based on axial magnetic flux leakage (MFL), to inspect the gas pipelines. Relatively, there is a low probability of detection (POD) for the axial defects with the axial MFL-based ILI. To prevent the buried pipeline from corrosion, it requires a protective coating. In addition to the potential damage to the coating by environmental factors and external forces, there could be defects on the damaged coating area. Thus, it is essential that nondestructive evaluation methods for detecting axial defects (axial cracks, axial groove) and damaged coating be developed. In this study, an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) sensor was designed and fabricated for detecting axial defects and coating disbondment. In order to validate the performances of the developed EMAT sensor, experiments were performed with specimens from axial cracks, axial grooves, and coating disbondment. The experimental results showed that the developed EMAT sensor could detect not only the axial cracks (minimum 5% depth of wall thickness) and axial grooves (minimum 10% depth of wall thickness), but also the coating disbondment.

Recent advances in printing technology have increased the productivity of the roll-to-roll (R2R) printing process for printed circuitry. In the R2R printed electronics, characteristics of printed and coated layers are one of the most important issues that determine the functional quality of final products. The slot-die technology can coat a large area with high uniformity using low-viscosity materials; determining the process parameters is important to obtain excellent coating qualities. In this study, a viscocapillary model was used to predict qualities of coated layers and patterns. On the basis of analysis results, a novel meta model was derived using design of experiment methodology to improve accuracy. Sensitivity analysis was performed to define major parameters in R2R slot-die coating process. The coating speed was found to most significantly affect the coated layer thickness and was easily controlled. The performance of the proposed model is verified through experimental studies. Based on the statistical analysis results, R2R slot die process can be optimized to guarantee a desired thickness.

Plasma spraying technique was used to fabricate functionally graded coating (FGC) of NiCrAIY/YSZ 8wt%$Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$ on a Co-base superalloy (HAYNES 188) substrate. Six layers were coated on the substrate for building up compositionally graded architecture. Conventional thermal barrier coating (TBC) of NiCrAIY/SZ with sharp interface was also fabricated. As-coated FGC and TBC samples were exposed at the temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10, 50, 100 hours in air. Microstructural change of thermally exposed samples was examined. Pores and microcracks were formed in YSZ layer due to evolution of thermal internal stress at high temperature. The amount of pores and microcracks in YSZ layer were increased with increasing exposure time at high temperature. High temperature oxidation of coatings occurred mainly at the NiCrAIY/YSZ interface. In comparison with the case of TBC. the increased area of the NiCrAIY/YSZ interface in FGC is likely to attribute to forming the higher amount of oxides.

According to a previous study, talc as a coating pigment can improve the viscosity and the water retention of coating color, the compressibility of coating layer, and hence gravure printability. Talc is also well known for its larger particle size than other pigments, which implies that less binder may be need due to its smaller specific surface area. This study investigated the possibility of reducing binder content for matte grade paper. Coating color was prepared with the Cotalc-2000, which showed the best properties in the previous study. The binder content was varied and the effect of binder content on the physical properties of coated paper and the gravure printability was investigated. It was shown that binder content could be reduced when talc was used as a coating pigment. The reduction in binder content did not influence gloss, roughness and the print density of coated paper but showed improvement in paper porosity, compressibility and missing dot.

Various technical approaches and concepts have been proposed to develop conductive super-hydrophobic (SH) surfaces. However, most of these approaches are not usable in practical applications because of insufficient adhesion and cost issues. Additionally, durability and uniformity issues are still in need of improvement. The goal of this research is to produce a large-area conductive SH surface with improved adhesion performance and uniformity. To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNT) with a high aspect ratio and elastomeric polymer were utilized as a conductive filler and matrix, respectively, to form a coating layer. Additionally, nanoscale silica particles were utilized for stable implementation of the conductive SH surface. To improve the adhesion properties between the SH coating layer and substrate, pretreatment of the substrate was conducted by utilizing both wet and dry etching processes to create specific organic functional groups on the substrate. Following pretreatment of the surface, a zirco-aluminate coupling agent was utilized to enhance adhesion properties between the substrate and the SH coating layer. Raman spectroscopy revealed that adhesion was greatly improved by the formation of a chemical bond between the substrate and the SH coating layer at an optimal coupling agent concentration. The developed conductive SH coating attained a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness, which is advantageous in self-cleaning EMI shielding applications.

A mold design for in-mold coating was developed to achieve simultaneous coating and injection molding of an automotive armrest. The developed mold includes one core and two cavities which are composed of a substrate cavity and a coating cavity. The core was attached to a movable plate and two cavities were mounted on a plate sliding in a stationary plate. In a two-step process, the part was first injection molded and subsequently, with the aid of a sliding table, was transferred to a second cavity. The materials used were PC/ABS for substrate and two-component polyurethane for coating. The experiments were conducted by changing the flow rate to investigate mixing characteristics. As the flow rate increased, the mixing improved. Additionally, the bubbles appeared over the substrate surface decreased with an increase of the weight of injected coating material.

Electrostatically-actuated Micro device have been used widely in a variety of integrated sensors and actuators. Electrostatically-actuated micro devices with a gap of several micrometers or less between the electrodes have shown failure problems by electrostatic adhesion. To improve this adhesion phenomenon, micro devices of varying lengths and widths in electrodes were fabricated, and an alumina coating was then deposited using atomic layer deposition technology. The effects of improving adhesion phenomenon were compared by measuring the pull-in voltage before and after the coating process. The pull-in voltage increased with increasing length of the upper electrode after the coating. An increase in the electrode area results in an increase in the pull-in voltage after coating. The alumina coating method applied to improve the adhesion on an electrostatically-actuated micro device was observed as an effective method.

This study examined the effects of carbon surface modification by the epoxy resin coating on the electrochemical performance. The mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) carbon was surface-modified by coating the epoxy resin and its electrochemical properties as an anode was examined. The surface coating of MCMB was carried out by refluxing the MCMB powders in a dilute H2SO4 solution, and mixing them with the epoxy resin-dissolved tetrahydrofuran(THF) solution. Under heat-treatment of the coated MCMB at the temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$, the epoxy-resin coating layer was converted into amorphous phase which was identified by a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The epoxy resin coated MCMB has higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, higher charge/ discharge capacity and better cycleability than a raw MCMB without coating. The reason for the enhancement of cell performance by the epoxy resin coating were considered as the epoxy resin coating layer plays an important role to be a barrier for carbon reacting with electrolyte and to retard the formation of passivation layer.

Development of an objective diagnosis index for diagnosing a the beginning nature of a disease is the most one of tongue diagnosis in the oriental medicine. However, previous systems have a difficult problem in the creation of objective diagnosis index, and focused on the expert system that can diagnose automatically without an oriental doctor behavior. Therefore, computerized assistant diagnosis software for calculating an optimized diagnosis index is proposed in this paper. This software is operated by the diagnosing behavior of oriental doctor. As developed software is a semi-automatic system, manual method is used to segment a tongue body. Futhermore, numerical diagnosis indices including the color information of non-tongue coating and tongue coating, WTCI are provided to oriental doctor automatically and real-timely. Also, probability estimation value for classifying no coating, thin coating, and thick coating is presented by using the tongue coating area ratio, and EMR chart can use for convenience of diagnosis. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the our developed software, after building a various tongue image from 60 subjects, we experimented on diagnosis image with our software. As a result, the developed software showed the 95% use-effectiveness of subjects.
