The Embryonic and Larval Development of the Greenling, Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et Starks (쥐노래미, Hexagrammos otakii 의 난발생과정(卵發生過程)및 자어(仔魚)의 형태발달(形態發達))

  • Greeling, Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et Starks is commonly found at the coastal waters of Korea and Japan. The authors carried out the artificial insemination in the laboratory on Dec, 17, 1987, and reared the hatched larvae in an aquarium. The eggs were demersal and adhesive, and their diameters were 2.00~2.15mm. Color of yolk was light yellow in the early stage, and then turned to orange before hatching. The yolk had numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 477hours after insemination under water temperature of $10.0{\sim}14.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were elongate in shape and 7.48~8.25mm in total length(TL) with 49~50 myomeres. The larvae absorbed the yolk material and oil globules completely in 5days after hatching and became postlarvae. In 17days after hatching, mean total length of the larvae was 9.85mm, and the caudal notochord flex at $45^{\circ}$. In 23days, total length reached 10.54mm. The part of the fin-fold of the future dorsal and anal fins became high. Spawning season of the Greenling is known to be from November to January in the southern coast of Korea.

A Basic Study on Prediction Module Development of Collision Risk based on Ship's Operator's Consciousness (선박운항자 의식 기반 충돌 위험도 예측 모듈 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In ports of Korea, the marine traffic flow is congested due to a large number of vessels coming in and going out. In order to improve the safety and efficiency of these vessels, South Korea is operating with a Vessel Traffic Service System, which is monitoring its waters for 24 hours. However despite these efforts of the VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) officers, collisions are occurring continuously, the risk situation is analyzed that occurs once in about 20 minutes, the risk may be greater. It investigated to reduce these accidents by providing a safety standard for collision danger in a timely manner. Thus, this study has developed a risk prediction module to predict risk in advance. This module can avoid collision risk to adjust the speed and course of ship using a risk evaluation model based on ship operator's risk perspective. Using this module, the ship operators and VTS officers can easily be identified risks in complex traffic situations, so they can take an appropriate action against danger in near future including course and speed change. To verify the effectiveness of this module, this paper predicted the risk of each encounter situation and confirmed to be capable of identifying a risk changes in specific course and speed changes at Busan coastal water.

A Basic Study on Establishment of Sea Trial Prohibition Waterway Based on Marine Traffic Survey (해상교통량 조사 기반 시운전금지해역 설정 기초 연구)

  • Korea has very strong shipbuilding industry in the world, so many new ships are constructed in Korean shipyards. These built vessels are carrying out sea trial at sea before delivering to shipowner, and sea trial ships cause navigation risk to other passing vessels to accomplish sea trial tests as quick turning, zigzag maneuvering and crash astern etc. in traffic congestion conditions. It occurred more than 1 collision accident related sea trial for recent 5 years. It has been increased about 30% of risk because of navigation of sea trial vessel by marine traffic flow simulation. This paper analyzed marine traffic density surveyed by AIS data for 7 days, and investigated position of marine accidents for 5 years in Korean coastal waterway, it established the sea trial prohibition areas as 10/100 level of total marine traffic volume, which is considered no danger for ship operator. This analyzed maritime safety law for setting of the prohibition waters to propose the basic legal system. It makes contribution to marine pollution prevention by setting of the sea trial prohibition water to improve the ship's navigation safety.

Effects of Water Temperature, Salinity and Irradiance on the Growth of the Toxic Dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium catenatum (Graham) Isolated from Yeosuhae Bay, Korea (여수해만에서 분리한 유독 와편모조류, Gymnodinium catenatum (Graham)의 성장에 미치는 수온, 염분과 광 조건)

  • A chain-forming toxic din flagellate, Gymnodinium catenatum (Graham) was known as a paralytic toxin-producer among Gymnodinoid group. In the study, the effects of water temperature, salinity and irradiance on the growth of G. catenatum isolated from Yeosuhae Bay, Korea were investigated. Water temperature range in which G. catenatum showed specific growth rate higher than 0.3 day$^{-1}$ were above about 18${^{\circ}C}$. However, salinity did not have such an effect on growth of G. catenatum. The maximum growth rate (0.5 day$^{-1}$) was obtained at 25${^{\circ}C}$ and 30 psu. The specific growth rate (u) expressed as a polynomial equation as functions of temperature (T; ${^{\circ}C}$) and salinity (S; psu) was $\mu$ = 0.005·T$^2$ - 0.0001164 T$^3$ - 0.063-S + 0.005-S$^2$ - 0.00007608-S$^3$ - 0.003-T-S + 0.00005308-T$^2$-S. Thus, in aspects of water temperature and salinity, the species may be expected to survive in most Korean coastal waters from early summer to autumn. The irradiance-growth curve was described as = 0.16 (I - 10.4)/(1 + 21.8) at 18${^{\circ}C}$ and 30 psu, indicating a half-saturation (Ks) photon flux density (PFD) of 42.6$\mu$mol m$^{-2}s^{-1}$ and compensation PFD (I$_0$) of 10.4$\mu$mol m$^{-2}s^{-1}$. These characteristic responses to irradiance suggest that G. catenatum can reside at the sub-surface.

A Study on the Characteristics of Echolocation Signals of the Common Dolphin, Delphinus Delphis (참돌고래의 반향정위 신호특성에 관한 연구)

  • The characteristics of echolocation signals of the Common Dolphin, Delphinus Delphis was observed by the hydrophone in order to detect exactly distribution and migration on whales and dolphins in Korean Coastal waters. It's observation was carried out at the position of 13 mm off Gam-Po of Korean east-southern sea at 3rd-5th. April and 13th-15th. October, 1999. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) The frequency range of ship's noise and ambient noise in the observed station was 0.5-0.3 kHz, that ones could be influenced to the behavior of common dolphins which carry out echolocation using low-frequency. (2) The common dolphin was radiated single click of 8.6 ms and double click of 4.8 ms pulse width during these observation (3) The high click frequencies of common dolphin were 5.10 kHz, 7.22 kHz, 10.60 kHz with the click pulse width of 4.0 ms, 2.6 ms, 1.0 ms, respectively. In case of low-frequency 1-2 kHz, that is, 1.12 kHz, 1.38 kHz, 1.82 kHz, pulse width were 22.4 ms, 2.05 ms, 11.9 ms, respectively and they showed a tendency using triple click signal. (4) The pulse width, pulse recurrence interval and frequency range of the observed echolocation signals were 2.4-8.4 ms, 9.0-40.0 ms, 0.60-10.63 kHz respectively, and frequency spectrum level was 100-125 dB for single, double, triple click signals.

  • Sea-eels caught by fishing boat and trawl were analyzed to investigate feeding status and individual growth of sea-eels caught from the lost plastic sea-eel Pot which is estimated at the ghost fishing Average length of sea-eel caught from fishing boat and test fishing was 33.6cm, 48.9cm for trawl and 45.6cm for the lost plastic sea-eel pot, respectively. The length frequency distribution is the same as the fact that sea-eel goes to the offshore from the coastal waters according to the getting growth. Sea-eel rate having empty stomach were 5.0% for fishing boat, 4.2% for trawl and the empty stomach rate of sea-eel was the highest as 87.6% in the lost pot. Sea-eel rate feeding fish as prey were 98.7% for fishing boat, 78.8% for trawl and 63.3% for the lost pot, respectively and other preys were crustacean and cephalopod. Fatness index calculated using weight and length were 1.514 for trawl catches and 1.292 for the lost pot and the difference was 15% between trawl catches and the lost pot. There also was difference at the 5% significance level in the result of t-test of Covariance Analysis.

  • Diffusion processes in tidal swinging coastal waters are studied by releasing one hundred liters of Rhodamine B four times. Dye patches were formed from instantaneous point sources. The patches were sampled with a pump on a tracking boat, and samples were analyzed with fluorospectro-photometer. The patterns of patches were reconstructed and their characteristics were analyzed in terms of variance of concentration, area estimation, and decrease rate of peak concentration. In all of the four experiments, the dye patches were mos시 elongated to the direction of current axis. the elongation rate was 0.34 on the average. Apparent diffusivities were 620 to 3,000 cm super(2) /sec during initial period of 90 minutes. The variance increased by exp(0.047t) on the average, and peak concentration deceased by exp(-0.044t) on the average.

  • The area of red tides occurences, which brings enormous damages every year, have been expanded to the coastal waters across the nation. Regarding to this trend, the development of red tide detection technology by using the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS lauched in 2010 has been drawn attentions of researchers. This study purposed on analyzing the frequency and density of red tides occurence by using the GOCI for detecting the southern sea, whereas targeted area. The observation has brought over the last three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) before the analysis was conducted. Followingly, the study could be resulted in extracting and revealing the hot spots of the red tides from two of analysis in the overlay and density. The distribution patterns of red tide occurrences according to those observed years has been shown in irregular characteristics and various changes. However, the analysis of hot spots, based on the frequency of the red tide occurrence, has revealed that the frequency of red tide occurences is continuously increased in the specific sea area. Therefore, it is concluded in that the continuous monitoring can contribute to predict accurate movements of red tides, so as establish systematic plans for preventing disasters.

Egg Development and Morphology of Sand Fish, Arctoscopus japonicus (Steindachner) Larvae and Juveniles Reared in the Larboratory (실험실에서 사육한 도루묵의 난발생 및 자치어의 형태)

  • Sand fish, Arctoscopus japonicus (Steindachner) is distributed in the coastal waters of East Sea of Korea, Japan, and Alaska. On December 1, 1987, matured adult of sand fish were collected from the shore of Ok-kye, Myongju-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea. The authors carried out artificial insemination on boat. The fertilized eggs were incubated and the larvae were reared in laborato교. The eggs of this species were demersal and adhesive, and their diameter were varied within $3.1\~3.4$mm (mean 3.3 mm, n= 10). They have a number of small oil globules. The spawned eggs in nature were formed the egg mass which were measured ca. 4 m in dia-meter. The hatching took place in 65 days after fertilization at the water temperature of $8.7\~12.3^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $8.5\~10.2$ mm in total length with 11 (abdominal) +40 (caudal) = 51 myomeres. 24 days after hatching, the larva attained 19.4 mm in total length, at this time the larvae absorbed the yolk completely, and become postlarvae. 32 days after hatching, the larva attained 23.4 mm in total length, and become juvenile. 56 days after hatching, the juvenile reached 29.9 mm in total length and had adult form. 5 spines of preopercle bone were formed at 24.4 mm in total length. At ca. 15 mm in total length, the form of the pectoral fin was transformed into the adult form.

Eggs Development and Larvae of the Right-eye Flounder, Limanda yokohamae Gunther (문치가자미의 난발생과 부화자어)

  • The right eye flounders, Limanda yokohamae Gunther widely distributed in the coastal waters of Korea and Japan. On Feburuary 3, 1983, the authors obtained a number of artificial fertilized eggs from the adult fishes(male: 285mm in total length; female: 297mm) caught by a trawl. The eggs of this species is demersal and adhesive, and the diameter of these eggs was varied in $0.71{\sim}0.80mm$. The egg capsule is colorless and transparent, and the eggs do not contain any oil globules, The hatching took place in 120 hour after fertilization at the water temperature $5.5{\sim}17.0^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $2.64{\sim}2.72mm$ in total length with long trunk. Myotome number was $9{\sim}10+30{\sim}32=39{sim}42$ and yellowish brown melanophores were appeared. In 3 days after hatching out. The larvae attained 3.3mm in total length, and the mouth began to move. Xanthophore appeared also on the opereulum at this time. After 7 days the larvae attained 3.70mm in total length, and became the postlarvae absorbing the yolk completely.
