  • Endophytic bacteria associated with the roots of coastal sand dune plants were isolated, taxonomically characterized, and tested for their plant growth-promoting activities. Ninety-one endophytic bacterial isolates were collected and assigned to 17 different genera of 6 major bacterial phyla based on partial 16S rDNA sequence analyses. Gammaproteobacteria represented the majority of the isolates (65.9%), and members of Pseudomonas constituted 49.5% of the total isolates. When testing for antagonism towards plant pathogenic fungi, 25 strains were antagonistic towards Rhizoctonia solani, 57 strains were antagonistic towards Pythium ultimum, 53 strains were antagonistic towards Fusarium oxysporum, and 41 strains were antagonistic towards Botrytis cinerea. Seven strains were shown to produce indole acetic acid (IAA), 33 to produce siderophores, 23 to produce protease, 37 to produce pectinase, and 38 to produce chitinase. The broadest spectra of activities were observed among the Pseudomonas strains, indicating outstanding plant growth-promoting potential. The isolates from C. kobomugi and M. sibirica also exhibited good plant growth-promoting potential. The correlations among individual plant growth-promoting activities were examined using phi coefficients, and the resulting data indicated that the production of protease, pectinase, chitinase, and siderophores was highly related.

  • The dominant species of the sand vegetation in the western coast of Korea were Carex pumila, Ischaemum antheporoides, Calystegia soldanella, Carex kobomugi and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii. The salt content of the sand dune soil and of the atmosphere of surveyed areas ranged from 3.93 to 13.86 mg% and from 25.81 to 168.86mg% respectively. Between the salt content of the atmosphere and that of the soil positive relationship was found. Species density and Simpson's index increased with the distance from the coast, the former was exponential, however, the latter was linear. The composition of biological types in the investigated stands were H-D4-R1-3-e or H-D4-R1-3-t. Relative numbers of psammophytes and rhizome psammophytes decreased with the distance from the coast, but those of other plants increased. The standing crop of the sand dune vegetation ranged from 0.04 to 491.64g/m2 and the average 27.77g/m2. This was varied as the stands and showed a linear increment as the distance from the coast was increased. The salt content of atmosphere significantly affected the density, T/R ratio in the standing crop and Simpson's index. The salt content of soil showed similar tendency on the density and the T/R ratio.

  • The coastal alluvial plain, sand dune, tidal nat might be the most prominent coastal landscape in western coast of Korea. The purpose of this paper is to examine the irrigation and drainage systems of the alluvial plain in the tidal coast. This study is concerned on the geomorphological and cultural landscapes of the alluvial plain in the western coast of the South Jeolla Province. The alluvial deposits have developed mainly by the actions of tidal currents, rather than transporting sediments by stream. The transformation of plain has been affected by human agency since 1920's. Dwellers have constructed the reservoir, banks, dammed pools, lock gates, and tide-dykes for the reclamation, irrigation, and drainage on the alluvial plain, coastal sanddune, and tidal flats.

  • A coastal dune field, located at Kimnyong-Wolchung beach in Jejudo, Korea, extends alongshore for about 4 km, with dunes extending inland about 6 km. Detailed geomorphological analysis of the area was carried out by using areal photography and Landsat images. Samples were collected across two transects, and physical and chemical properties are analyzed to detect the variation of both properties depending on distance form the beach. Paleosol layers found during the field trip suggest that dune emplacement is episodic. Radiocarbon dates from nearby Hyupjae beach indicate that dunes have been formed during the late Holocene by the disturbance of calcareous materials.

  • This study deals with geomorphological process of the sand dune landform including the distribution and surface environments, characteristics of sediments, origins and moving processes in lower reach and mouth delta of Duman River, Northeast Korea and China. The methodology of the study includes image analysis of Landsat TM(1992.10) and ETM(2000.9) and Spot(2005.4) for analysis of land cover, 2 times field survey for recognition of landform and acquisition of sediments raw data materials, and grain analysis and exoscopy about raw data materials. The geomorphic elements from satellite image analysis are composed of the delta, sand spit, active and stable dune, sand bar and riparian vegetated zone. Results of the grain analysis indicate the sediments originated from marine coastal zone than riverine one. This means that present sand dune not so much reflect present climatic and geomorphic environments. Result of the exoscopy analysis show that ratio of quartz, which is comparatively resistant to environment, is highest as $65{\sim}83%$ out of sediments. But the surface of the $30{\sim}40%$ of mineral grains was coated by yellow-colored stained materials, due to chemical weathering. Some grains show rough skin, looking as acicular, network structure and etching pits, affected by physical and chemical weathering.

  • This paper is a research that investigated the distribution and status of coastal sand dunes spread along the shoreline of Ongjin-gun, Jung-gu in Incheon and evaluated their conservation status. In Incheon, the length of coastline along the West Sea shoreline is 1,053km. thus leading to an assumption that coastal sand dunes are dispersed their as many as other regional local government. However, there are no enough basic data on the distribution, characteristics, and the management status of other areas besides the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment. Considering this fact, this paper additionally drew 21 coastal sand dunes in the shoreline of Incheon, including the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment, through the standard of coastal sandhill selection. The additionally selected aimed to propose how to develop basic materials on the conservation status of coastal sandhills in Incheon through characteristic analysis by sandhill and qualitative evaluation.

  • To verify growth properties of Carex kobomugi, above and belowground parts of C. kobomugi were surveyed on coastal sand dune at Sinduri, Choongnam Province from April, 2001 to June 2003. The results were the same as follows. In coastal sand dune, C. kobomugi followed Elymus mollis from mean high tide line. Density of C. kobomugi was the highest at unstable sand dune and 150 plants/㎡. And rates of flowering plant were 70% at unstable area and 10% at stable area. C.kobomugi is thus plant that adapted to unstable sand dune. Shoot distributed irregularly. The rhizome of C. kobomugi gradually decreased with the soil depth in unstable area, but mainly distributed to 20 ㎝ depth. New rhizome could be generated from the rhizome which was below 150 ㎝ depth or 5 years old. The number and length of new rhizome were related to biomass of previous year's shoot. That was, shoots which were below 0.5 and over 3 g/shoot in dry weight generated 1 and 5 rhizomes, respectively. And the mean lengths of rhizome from small (below 0.5 g) and large (over 3.0 g) shoots were 13.0 ㎝ and 57.6 ㎝, respectively.

  • This study aims to figure out the vegetation status and characteristics of the spatial distribution in Taeanhaean National Park. As a result, vegetation communities were Pinus thunbergii community, Pinus densiflora community, Pinus thunbergii-Pinus densiflora community, Camellia japonica community, Carpinus turczaninowii community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Pinus thunbergii community, Kalopanax septemlobus community, Koelreuteria paniculata community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, and sand dune and coastal wetland vegetation including Vitex rotundifolia community, Elymus mollis community, Calamagrostis epigeios community, Ischaemum anthephoroides community, Zoysia sinica community, Suaeda maritima community, and Phragmites communis community. Landscape types in actual vegetation map were Pinus thunbergii community (3.92%), Pinus densiflora community (1.40%), Robinia pseudoacacia community (0.05%), sand dune and coastal wetland vegetation (0.11%), field (0.46%), seashore (0.24%), thinning area (0.08%), bareground (0.16%), and sea (93.58%). Area of Pinus thunbergii community among vegetation type was $14.797km^2$ (3.92%) and the largest. Stratification structure and species composition of Pinus thunbergii community distributed in the seashore were different as a result of disturbance and human use. On the other hand, we assumed that succession will take place to the potential natural vegetation that is Quercus serrata and Quercus dentata in undisturbed Pinus thunbergii community. Meanwhile, Erechtites hieracifolia was occupied in understory of Pinus thunbergii community around the seashore and Diodia teres was invaded to sand dune vegetation. They may affect on natural species negatively. Therefore, monitoring and management plans are necessary.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the mid-term changes of beach and dune morphology at Sohwang beach, Korea using by Total Station. Measurements executed 4 times during two year. Based on ArcInfo as point cloud obtained through precise measurement data by Total Station, alteration of beach and dune was analyzed at DEM, of which cell size is about 1m. Since these artificial constructions have influenced current systems of this region, the large-scale sand movements above mentioned have occurred around the jetty and the sea-wall. There occurred sedimentation in the north of the Jetty and erosion in the south of the Jetty, which is installed at the central part of object area. The direction of recent topographic development does not coincide with that of wind, and, rather, topographic changes occurred mainly at beaches and dunes due to the transformation of coastal water flow caused by artificial structure nearby. If precise measurement is conducted periodically, and long term monitoring is carried out by installing equipment measuring movement pattern of sediment around artificial structure, cause of topographic change around the object area could be discovered.
