Analysis of Site Condition in Domestic Trade Port for Operation of Mobile Harbor (모바일하버 운영을 위한 국내 무역항 후보지 분석)

  • In this study, a new concept of ocean transport system, called the mobile harbor serving for a short distance transport of containers with cargo handling cranes between mother containerships and coastal ports, is introduced. Instead of direct berthing a very large containership at the coastal port, Mobile Harbor is moving to the offshore mooring basin with enough water depth condition. Therefore, investigation of the coastal environment, technical condition and limitation of the domestic trade ports for the application of Mobile Harbor, is essential process. To figure out the accessibility of mobile harbor, the environmental conditions, the cargo handling capacity and marine traffic volume and flow pattern has been analyzed with the tools for marine traffic simulation and virtual navigation aids system. The most proper Mobile Harbor mooring areas among trade ports of the south and east coast are selected by analyzing the obtained information and evaluating its application: (1) Under natural environmental conditions such as air and sea weather, three candidate areas are selected such as Masan port, Ulsan port, and Busan(New port) port. (2) Under marine traffic and appropriateness of water facilities, three candidate areas are selected as Mokpo port, Busan(New port) port, and Donghae & Mookho port (3) For a region-based analysis considering handling capacity and the local managed trade ports in vicinity, three candidate areas are selected as Busan region, Yosu & KwangYang region, and Mokpo region. Through this study, the basic guideline for selection of optimum trade port and offshore mooring basin for mothership and Mobile Harbor is recommended. In order to apply the Mobile Harbor to the real water, navigaton aids as the virtual route identification with AIS must be introduced for maritime safety in the vicinity of Mobile Harbor area which berthing and cargo handling is being conducted.

Derivation of Correct Solutions for Harbor Oscillations by Depth Discontinuity along Offshore Boundary (외해 경계에서의 수심 불연속에 의한 항만 공진의 정해 유도)

  • It is well known that when long waves propagate from deep ocean onto a continental shelf with a very steep continental slope, the waves reflected from the shore can not propagate offshore and are re-reflected from the continental slope so that large water level fluctuations are induced near the shore. Liu(1986) has analyzed this phenomenon by assuming a topography which has a depth discontinuity along a semicircular offshore boundary, but his solution is erroneous. In the present paper, we correct his analytical solutions for a straight shoreline and a rectangular harbor. The corrected solution is then compared with the numerical results of the Galerkin finite element model of Jeong et al.(1998), which is based on the extended mild-slope equation.

  • In this study, damage detection method using harmony search method and frequency response is proposed. In order to verify this method, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, damage detection method using harmony search was developed. To detect damage, objective functions that minimize difference with natural frequency and modal strain energy from undamaged and damaged model are used. Secondly, efficiency of developed damage detection method was verified by damage detection of beam structure. And results of harmony search and micro genetic algorithm are compared and evaluated. Thirdly, numerical model was implemented for harbor caisson structure and damage scenario was determined. Lastly, damage detection was performed by proposed method and utility of proposed method is verified.

Effects of the Oscillating Water Channel Length on the Water Surface Elevation within Seawater Exchange Breakwater (진동수로 내장 해수교환방파제의 수로길이 변화에 따른 수위공진)

  • The seawater exchange breakwater equipped with an oscillating water channel and water transmitting pipes has a very spectacular function that seawater supply can be greatly increased due to the upsurge of the water surface inside the channel at resonance condition which can be reached when the incident wave period becomes close to the natural period of the channel. The variations of the water level and period inside the channel are very important factors in enhancing the efficiency of sea water exchange, especially when designing the breakwater cross-section in shallow water zone which requires longer resonance period with the elongated horizontal projection of the channel. In the present study, a hydraulic experiment was performed varying the length of the oscillating channel, and the resonance periods and water surface variations are analyzed in terms of water transmission through the pipes.

Countermeasures for the Siltation in Small Fishery Harbors (소규모 어항의 항내매몰 방지대책 검토)

  • The sediment at the majority of fishery harbors located on the east coast of Korea are affccted by the waves and wave-induced currents as the main external force. And the surroundings of the harbors are composed of sandy beaches. Because many harbors are small and their entrances are located in the wave¬breaking zone, they suffer severe siltation and topographical changes. In order to solve the problems, we have to understand the mechanism through estimations and accurate reproduction of the harbor siltation phenomenon. We suggest economically substantial countermeasures for harbor siltation in the small fishery harbors and investigate the preventive effects using a numerical simulation technique.

  • The collapses and settlement of harbor facilities from earthquakes were known due mostly to liquefaction of reclaimed land. The most harbor quay wa1ls being designed as gravity types in Korea are known susceptible structures to liquefaction because reclaimed land was not treated resistant to earthquake. In this study, liquefaction susceptibility of reclaimed land behind a large quay walls under construction to earthquake was predicted and its stability was analyzed. In addition, liquefaction prediction methods in harbor facilities specification adopted by both Korea and Japan were compared by applying the methods to prediction of liquefaction susceptibility of reclaimed land, respectively.

  • Based on the facts that significant parts of the harbor response spectrum usually reside in the vicinity of the Helmholtz mode in the eastern part of Korea. economically feasible redemption measures of seiches for malfunctioned harbors already in service is proposed by extending the wisdom of perforated breakwaters and adjusting the width of entrance channel as a control tool. It turns out that as the entrance channel is getting narrower, the harbor system is getting slender due to the increase of added hydrodynamic length so that harbor response can be effectively diminished and separated from the incident wave spectrum where considerable amount of wave energy is located at the lower frequency range.

Analysis of Wave Responses in Harbor Using Boundary Damper Techniques (경계 damper를 이용한 항만 파낭응답 해석)

  • This paper is concerned with developing a finite element model incorporating boundary damper techniques which is applicable to the prediction of wave agitations in harbors. Based on the linear wave theory, a mild-slope equation is used. In order to consider the wave energy dissipations on solid boundary. the partial reflecting boundary condition is introduced. Radiating boundary condition is modeled by using tile second-order boundary damper developed by Bando et al. (1984). The near field region in harbor is discretized using 8-noded isoparametric elements, the boundary conditions are presented using 3-noded line elements. The numerical model is applied to a fully open rectangular harbor to prove its validity. Numerical experiments are also performed to investigate the effects of the wave reflection coefficients of solid boundary and the types of the dampers.

  • In the present study, for fully-open rectangular harbors, sensitivity analyses are made for the major parameters which are relevant to the practical application of a hybrid element model widely used fur the analysis of harbor oscillation. The results show that it is desirable to extend the finite element region to the area in which depth change is not large and that it is appropriate to take the depth of the outer region for analytic solution as the average along the boundary between the two regions. It is expected that the number of Fourier components of the analytic solution may not be important for a constant-depth simple-shaped harbor but its significance may increase for harbors of varying depth and complex geometry. It is found that the effect of incident wave direction is not significant for the first resonance mode but its effect becomes important as the bottom slope increases, especially for the higher resonance modes.

A Study on Optimized Size of a Mobile Harbor for South Korea Coastal Service

  • The aim of paper is to calculate the optimized size of Mobile Harbor(MH) which would be operated in South Korea coast area. MH is the combined entity which has the function of both ship and container port. In estimating the optimized size, the total cost concept is applied to the different size of MH. Trade-off factors for calculating total cost are MH cost and the over-capacity lost cost. The factors for MH cost estimation are the cargo demand, distance from origin to destination, voyage route and MH's fixed and variable cost in both sailing and port. The other cost is the over-capacity lost cost which is occurred from dead space in case of oversize compared with a voyage demand. The alternatives for the least cost are 250TEU, 500TEU, 750TEU and 1,000TEU sized vessel. The result of research is that 250TEU sized vessel is optimized in a South Korea costal service. If the coastal area be separated in terms of voyage distance or the specific area in considering trade, the optimized size is changed depending upon distance.
