  • A low-priced catalyst for pyrolysis of LDPE has been synthesized. Fly ash, which is waste material generated from coal-fired power plants was used as silica and alumna sources for solid acid catalyst. Amorphous silica-alumina catalysts (FSAs) were pre-pared by dissolution of silica and alumina from fly ash, followed by co-precipitation of the dissoluted ions. A series of LDPE pyrolysis were carried out in a thermogravimetric analyzer to investigate the effects of synthesis conditions such as NaOH/fly ash weight ratio and activation time one catalytic performance of FSAs. The physical properties of FSAs were examined and related to their catalytic performances. FSA(1.2-8) synthesized with NaOH/fly ash weight ratio of 1.2 and the activation time of 8 hours showed the best catalytic performance. The catalytic performance of FSA(1.2-8) was comparable with that of commercial catalysts and it was concluded that the FSA could be a good candidate for catalytic use in the recycling of waste polyolefins.

  • Ash included in coal can cause environmental pollution and it can decrease efficiency of mass and heat transfer by getting scorched and stick in the facilities operated at high temperature. To solve this problem, a feasibility study on pulverized coal fired power plant and integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) using the AFC (Ash-Free Coal) as well as the development to remove the ash from the coal was conducted. In this research, optimization of operating condition was proposed by using sensitivity analysis of ASPEN $Plus^{(R)}$ to apply the coal containing under the 200 ppm ash for integrated gasification combined cycle. Particularly, the coal gasification process was classified as three parts : pyrolysis process, volatile matter combustion process and char gasification process. The dimension and operating condition of 1.5 ton/day class non-slagging gasifier are reflected in the coal gasification process model.

  • The experiment was designed to compare pyrolysis kinetics of two different classes of imported coal. The pyrolysis behaviors of the coals were first observed with thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). The kinetic analysis was further done based on a new distributed activation energy model(New DAEM). During the analysis, weight loss curves measured at three different heating rates were used to obtain the activation energy distribution function curve f(E) of a given coal sample where a mean activation energy is determined by its peak. The results show a significant difference in the mean activation energy between two coals for the pyrolytic reaction. The prediction of a chemical percolation devolatilization(CPD) model where the kinetics obtained from the New DAEM method were incorporated is in much closer agreement with an experimental data of TGA particularly for the bituminous coal.

  • Soot and tar which were derived from combustion or pyrolysis processes in Puverized Coal(PC) furnace or boiler have been significantly dealing in a radiative heat transfer and an additional source of NOx. Furthermore, the increasing for the use of a coal with low caloric value gives rise to a lot of tar-soot yield and LOI in a recycled ash for using cement materials. So, the ash with higher tar-soot yield and LOI can not recycle due to decreased strength of concrete. In this study, tar-soot yields and flame structures were investigated using the LFR for a blending combustion with bituminous coal and sub-bituminous coal. Also, The investigation were conducted as each single coals and blending ratio. The coals are used in a doestic power plant. In the experimental results, sub-bituminous coal with high volatile contents shows longer soot cloud length than bituminous coal, but overall flame length was shorter than bituminous coal. Tar-soot yields of sub-bituminous coal is lower than those of bituminous coal. Combustion characteristics are different between single coal and blended coal. Therefore, finding an optimal coal blending ratio according to coal rank effects on tar-soot yields.

  • The underground coal which is buried in the ground will have a lot of attention to overcome energy crisis as an energy resources standpoint. Many studies of underground coal gasification have been also conducted because of its advantage which does not require mining. In this study, the simulation of underground coal gasification process was carried out with Aspen Plus. This study was executed by Rock Mountain 1 Underground Coal Gasification project in the United States in the late 1980s as a reference. Sensitivity analysis proceeded to investigate synthesis gas characteristics following different injection condition of oxidizing agent. The underground coal gasification model has been implemented. That is divided into drying, pyrolysis, char gasification and the simulation results was confirmed by the production gas flow, yield of synthesis gas and amount of gasified carbon from results of the actual experimental data.

  • Experimental studies are carried out to find the behavior of sulfur compounds which are evolved during high temperature pyrolysis of coals at the smelting reduction process for iron ore. Three kinds of bituminous coals, such as Hunter & Mt. Thorley (Australia), and Ensham (South Africa) are used. And forms of sulfur compound and their amounts are analyzed at the temperature ranges of 800~110$0^{\circ}C$. Then H$_2$S is the major gas, but CS$_2$ and COS are minor gases. Sulfur compounds in three coals are distributed into the volatiles (gas & tar) and coal char as the ratio of approximately 50%:50%, respectively.

  • For the purpose of utilizing fly ash from gasification of low rank coal, we performed the series of experiments such as pyrolysis and char-$CO_2$ gasification on fly ash by using the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at non-isothermal heating conditions (10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C/min$). Pyrolysis rate has been analyzed by Kissinger method as a first order, the reliability of the model was lower because of the low content of volatile matter contained in the fly ash. The experimental results for the fly ash char-$CO_2$ gasification were analyzed by the shrinking core model, homogeneous model and random pore model and then were compared with them for the coal char-$CO_2$ gasification. The fly ash char (LG coal) with low-carbon has been successfully simulated by the homogeneous model as an activation energy of 200.8 kJ/mol. In particular, the fly ash char of KPU coal with high-carbon has been successfully described by the random pore model with the activation energy of 198.3 kJ/mol and was similar to the behavior for the $CO_2$ gasification of the coal char. As a result, the activation energy for the $CO_2$ gasification of two fly ash chars don't show a large difference, but we can confirm that the models for their $CO_2$ gasification depend on the amount of fixed carbon.

  • Mathematical models for various steps in coal gasification reactions were developed and applied to investigate the effects of operation parameters on dynamic behavior of gasification process. Chemical reactions considered in these models were pyrolysis, volatile combustion, water shift reaction, steam-methane reformation, and char gasification. Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions between char and gaseous agents was based on Random pore model. Momentum balance and Stokes' law were used to estimate the residence time of solid particles (char) in an up-flow reactor. The effects of operation parameters on syngas composition, reaction temperature, carbon conversion were verified. Parameters considered here for this purpose were $O_2$-to-coal mass ratio, pressure of reactor, composition of coal, diameter of char particle. On the basis of these parametric studies some quantitative parameter-response relationships were established from both dynamic and steady-state point of view. Without depending on steady state approximation, the present model can describe both transient and long-time limit behavior of the gasification system and accordingly serve as a proto-type dynamic simulator of coal gasification process. Incorporation of heat transfer through heterogenous boundaries, slag formation and steam generation is under progress and additional refinement of mathematical models to reflect the actual design of commercial gasifiers will be made in the near futureK.

  • In this study, we used a commercial simulator to investigate the gasification characteristics of Roto coal in the partitioned fluidized-bed gasifier, which consists of 4 parts such as coal pyrolysis, char gasification, tar/oil gasification and char combustion. The heating medium was exchanged between the combustion part and the gasification part in order to supply the energy needed for pyrolysis and gasification. The correlation model from experimental data in relation to the reaction temperatures, the reaction gases and the coal feed rates was derived for the coal pyrolysis. The equilibrium model was used for the gasification and the combustion model for the char combustion. In order to compare the reaction behavior of the partitioned fluidized-bed gasifier, the single-bed gasifier was also simulated. The cold gas efficiency of both partitioned fluidized-bed gasifier and single-bed gasifier was almost the same. The $H_2$ and $CH_4$ contents of the syngas in the partitioned fluidized-bed gasifier slightly increased and the CO and $CO_2$ contents slightly decreased, compared with the singlebed gasifier. In order to verify the model, ten cases of the single-bed gasification experiment have been simulated. The contents of CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$ in the syngas from the simulation corresponded with the experimental data while those of $H_2$ was slightly higher than experimental data, but the tendency of $H_2$ content in the syngas was similar to the experiments. In the coal conversion, the simulation results were higher than the experiments since equilibrium model was used for the gasification so that the residence time and contact time in the model is different from the experiments.

  • This study describes how successfully a conventional flame aerosol synthesis was used to continuously synthesize Pt-Ru catalysts supported by carbon agglomerates. Nearly spherical catalysts produced in the flame were mainly composed of metallic Pt and Ru with the molar ratio of 1:1 and those sizes were controllable from ~1.5 nm to ~2.0 nm. Nevertheless, only Pt peaks were found from X-ray diffraction experiments, suggesting that amorphous-like Ru was well mixed in the crystalline Pt lattices. It was found from Cyclo-voltamograms and CO stripping experiments that the electrochemical properties of the catalysts are at least comparable to that of a conventional commercial sample.
