This study investigated the relationships among cognitive age, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and appearance management behaviors. This study gave a questionnaire survey to adults between the ages of 17 and 76 who lived in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions of South Korea. Data collected from the 296 respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and ANOVA. The sociocultural attitudes towards appearance (awareness and internalization) were significantly correlated with appearance management behaviors (weight training, skin care, hair care, make-up, and clothing selection). The cognitive age was significantly correlated with the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and appearance management behaviors such as weight training and clothing selection.
The purpose of this study was to explore how the Theory of Planned Behavior applies to five appearance management behaviors and the effects of three variables - attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control on appearance management behaviors. The research was conducted by surveying 410 female adult respondents between the ages of 20 to 40 with the goal of predicting the appearance management behavior of women. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and Amos 19 in addition to Frequency analysis and path analysis. In the first case, the potential for applying appearance management theory on appearance management behavior of women was observed. The appearance management behavior performed by women was classified into five categories: skin care behavior, makeup management behavior, apparel management behavior, hair care behavior, and weight management behavior. It was determined all five behaviors could be predicted by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior. In the second case, effects of attitude related to subjective norm and perceived behavior control related to skin care behavior was statistically significant. In terms of makeup management behavior, all of the three variables were statistically significant. With regard to apparel management behavior, only subjective norm behavior was statistically significant. Concerning hair care behavior, attitude and perceived behavior control were statistically significant. On weight management behavior only attitude was statistically significant.
The purpose of this study lies in identifying the psychological state of working women engaged in sales and services and seeing how it is correlated to their nail management behavior. Also, the study aims to look into the relationship that exists between these two factors and provide information to help women live and work better with higher self-satisfaction. As for the research process, 210 women aged 20 to 30 engaging in sales and services of clothing, financing, and cosmetics sales were asked to fill out questionnaires. Survey results indicate that women who received college education and beyond as well as those working in the cosmetics sales area were exceptional in their psychological wellbeing. In addition, women with higher income, especially those who work in the cosmetics sales field and are not yet married participated in nail management behavior with the most enthusiasm. Therefore as for the relationship between psychological wellbeing and nail management behavior, it can be said that the better one's psychological wellbeing is, the more one is likely to strive for uniqueness in managing nails.
The purpose of this study was for the adult woman that provides the investigation, analysis, consideration of the relationship with clothing behavior and self-efficacy depends on their skin care grade. Data were collected from 477 adult females and analyzed by using frequency, dispersion analysis, ANOVA, t-test, Duncan test utilizing SPSS 10.0 program. The results were as follows: The younger and the more educated respondents were the better their skin care. Also, the more they spent on clothes, the more they spent on cosmetic products. For occupations, professionals were to have better skin care. It was expose that 20s and 30s are shown difference for all low rank leading persons except conformity in the midst of it is clothing behavior main point by skin care management degree, 40s appeared that difference is seen in interest, psychological dependence, aesthetics, management. It was expose that difference does not exist in liver that is clothing behavior main point by skin care administration degree in 50s. 20s appeared difference in general self-efficacy divination in self-efficacy, and 30s appeared that skin care degree is high as general self-efficacy and physical self-efficacy are high. It was expose that 40s and 50s are no difference of self-efficacy in between group by skin care degree.
This study examined the differences in appearance orientation and appearance management behavior in groups (classified by the body mass index) as well as explored the differences in each of demographic variables. Data were collected from 513 respondents from the city of Daegu as well as Gyeongbuk province. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Duncan tests. The results showed that 14.3% of the respondents were underweight, 60.0% normal, and 25.7% overweight according to BMI. The appearance orientation of the respondents was revealed to be high. Skin care was the most popular appearance management behavior, followed by make-up, clothing selection, hair care and weight training. Due to appearance orientation by body type, the appearance orientation for the underweight was the highest followed by normal and overweight. There were significant differences in skin care, make-up, clothing selection, hair care among the three groups in appearance management behavior; however, no differences in weight training. Generally, appearance management behavior of the underweight was the highest, followed by the normal and the overweight. In addition, there were significant group differences in appearance orientation and appearance management behavior according to demographic variables. This study contributes basic information to the field of appearance management behavior research and beauty industry marketing strategy through a better understanding of the relationships of BMI, appearance orientation, and appearance management behavior.
The purpose of this study was to investigate clothing behavior of women in Dae Jeon and to find out the relationship between clothing behavior and occupations. Measures selected for this study was‘Creekmore Scales of Eight Clothing Variables’, (Creekmore, 1966). The questionnaires were distributed to women in Dae Jeon including teachers, women working in a government office, women working in a company, nurses, women working in a bank, women working in a department store and the business center, technicians, women working in a merry making place, and house wives. For statistical analyses of the data from 400 respondents, F-test, and t-test were used. The results were as follows: 1. There were partially significant relationship between clothing behavior and occupations. The significant variables were modesty, comfort, approval, and dependence among the eight clothing variables. a) The group of highest interest in modesty and comfort was house wives and the group of lowest interest was women working in a merry making place. b) The group of highest interest in approval was women working in a merry making place and the group of lowest interest was women working in a bank. c) The group of highest interest in dependence was teachers and the group of lowest interest was nurses. 2. Partially significant differences were found in clothing behavior between a working women and house wives: The house wives were more interest in modesty, comfort, management. 3. Partially significant difference were found in clothing behavior between White-collar workers and Blue-collar workers were more interest in attention, approval, interest.
This study examines the effect of sociocultural attitude toward appearance and appearance comparison on appearance management behavior by adolescents. The study examines the differences of the effect relationships among the three variables according to adolescents' sex and school grade. The questionnaire was administrated to 575 middle school and high school students in Gwangju from September 2-8, 2011. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis by SPSS for WIN program. The results were as follows. First, the sociocultural attitude toward appearance was composed of two factors: internalization and awareness. Adolescent's appearance management behavior was composed of four factors: hair and style, face, weight, and neatness. There are significant differences on sociocultural attitude toward appearance and appearance management behavior by gender, age (girl/middle, boy/middle, girl/high, boy/high). Second, the sociocultural attitude toward appearance significantly influenced appearance management behavior with significant differences among groups. Third, the sociocultural attitude toward appearance significantly influenced the appearance comparison and there are significant differences among groups. Fourth, appearance comparison significantly influenced appearance management behavior with significant differences among groups. Fifth, the sociocultural attitude toward appearance mediated by appearance comparison statistically did not influence appearance management behavior.
This study aimed to investigate the associations between clothing consumption values and the ambivalent clothing consuming behavior of young female adults. To explain the ambivalent consuming behavior prevailing in the contemporary fashion market, five dimensional consumption values proposed by Sheth(1991) were adopted as explanatory factors, and fashion leadership and spending were included as moderating factors. Data collecting using written survey instrument yielded one hundred and seventy two complete responses from female consumers aged between 20 and 39. Factor analysis on clothing consumption values resulted in five dimensional structures of consumption values for the sample: expressive, epistemic, functional, social, and fashionable values. Among these, expressive, functional, and social values significantly affected ambivalent consuming behavior. The effect of expressive value was strong regardless of fashion innovativeness, opinion-leadership, and monthly income of consumers, however, the effects of epistemic, functional, and social values were changed depending on the moderating factors.
The purpose of this study was to classify types in sense of gender role identity and to figure out the difference among sociocultural attitude, benefits of clothing pursuit, and appearance management behaviors by sense of gender role identity types. Questionnaires were administered to 455 people in their twenties and thirties living in Daegu and Kyoungbuk area. Data were analyzed by using frequency, factor analysis, credibility, $X^2$-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test, and t-test. The findings are as follows. First, Men of androgyny group showed the highest rate of 38.5% followed by undifferentiation(22.9%), masculineness(21.0%), and feminineness(17.6%). Women of undifferentiation group showed the highest rate of 33.2% followed by feminineness (25.2%), androgyny(22.0%), and masculineness(19.6%). Second, factors of sociocultural attitude were internalization and recognition. Benefits of clothing pursuit consists of the factors such as consciousness of others, personality, and vogue pursuit. Factors of appearance management behaviors were dressing, skin management, plastic surgery management, weight management, health management, and hair management. Third, the result from the difference between sociocultural attitude and benefits of clothing pursuit by sense of gender role identity types, men of androgyny and feminineness showed highest in recognition while women of androgyny showed highest in internalization and recognition. The result of the difference in benefits of clothing pursuit by sense of gender role identity shows that both men and women of androgyny group have high tendency for being conscious of others, personality pursuit, and vogue pursuit while men of undifferentiation and masculineness have low interest in dressing in relationship with others. Fourth, the examination of the difference in appearance management behavior by sense of gender role identity types found men of androgyny group managed dressing, skin, weight, health and hair most while women dress and health most. Men of undifferentiation group managed dressing and weight least, while men of masculineness health, and men of feminineness hair least.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the type of masculinity on appearance-oriented and appearance management behavior. Questionnaires were administered to 201 males 20s to 50s living in Daegu. The SPSS 20.0 package was utilized for data analysis which included frequency analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, cluster analysis, regression analysis, t-test and logistic regression. First, factor analysis in a appearance management behavior and the type of masculinity, were cluster analysis in appearance-oriented. Were used to analyze the problem of the study by classified five factors and two groups. The results of this study were as follows: First, the masculinity of Retro sexual, Metro sexual, Techno sexual showed a negative influence on appearance-oriented. Second, the masculinity had a influence on appearance management behavior. M-ness showed a negative influence on skin care, Metro sexual showed a positive influence on skin care, hair/fashion, cosmetics, plastic surgery. And Retro sexual showed a influence on skin care, positive influence on hair/fashion, cosmetics. Techno sexual showed a positive influence on body management, skin care, hair/fashion. Uber sexual showed a positive influence on body management, cosmetics of appearance management. Third, the appearance-oriented had a differences on body management, hair/fashion, cosmetics, plastic surgery of appearance management behavior.
