  • This paper presents a method for approximation of the standard normal distribution by using hyperbolic tangent based functions. The presented approximate formula for the cumulative distribution depends on one numerical coefficient only, and its accuracy is admissible. Furthermore, in some particular cases, closed forms of inverse formulas are derived. Numerical results of the present method are compared with those of an existing method.

  • This paper proposes a new absorbing boundary condition(ABC) for the FDTD simulation of waveguide problems. It is based on the exact analytic expression for the time domain EM wave propatation in the waveguide. The ABC derived from the expression has a convolution form whose kernel (the discrete Green's function) has a simple, closed form formula. Also, it is applicable to the wide variety of waveguide types with conducting boundaries and complex cross-sectional shapes.

  • Stability is impaired in capsules in which there is a transfer of water vapor from capsule to the contents of the capsules. The water vapor transfer between AEA-coated capsules and corn starch, magnesium trisilicate in the closed container was examined. Experimental eguilibrium relative humidity after water vapor transfer and estimated values calculated from a formula of these substances were in close agreement with each other.

  • In this paper, we deal with the pricing of vulnerable power exchange option. We consider the hybrid model as the credit risk model. The hybrid model consists of a combination of the reduced-form model and the structural model. We derive the closed-form pricing formula of vulnerable power exchange option based on the change of measure technique.

  • The Cayley-Bacharach theorem says that every cubic curve on an algebraically closed field that passes through a given 8 points must contain a fixed ninth point, counting multiplicities. Ren et al. introduced a concrete formula for the ninth point in terms of the 8 points [4]. We would like to consider a different approach to find the ninth point via the theory of truncated moment problems. Various connections between algebraic geometry and truncated moment problems have been discussed recently; thus, the main result of this note aims to observe an interplay between linear algebra, operator theory, and real algebraic geometry.

  • Simple Lie albegras over algebraically closed field with characteristic p > 7 were classified by H. Strade and R. L. Wilson in 1991 [7]. All modular representations of simple Lie algebras, however, are not classified although some restricted modular representations have been done earlier by Curtis and Steinberg. In connection with this, we would like to decompose basic $sp_4$(F)-modules $sl_4$-(F) and $gl_4$(F) over nonzero characteristic by way of characteristic zero case.

  • In this study, we investigate a design technology intended to radically increase the buckling strength of vertically curved panels. Recent studies proposed a buckling strength formula which properly reflects the effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when they are stiffened by closed section ribs. Herein, we attempted to quantitatively evaluate this effect on curved panels and to reveal the correlations with the design parameters. The commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, was used to build a three dimensional numerical model and numerical parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the variation of the buckling strength. In the case of flat panels, the local buckling strength of stiffened curved panels increases proportionally with increasing rotational stiffness of the closed-section ribs. After attaining a limiting value, an obvious tendency was found that the local buckling strength of the stiffened curved panel would converge towards a fixed value when the panels are supported along both sides. The parametric studies performed using the influential design parameters confirmed that the estimated partially-restrained curved panel strength is well correlated with the proposed formula.

  • In lots of application to heat exchanger systems, closed two-phase thermosyphons are tilted from a horizontal. If the tilt angle, especially, is less than 30$^{\circ}$, the operational performances of thermosyphon are highly dependent on tilt angle. The present study was conducted to better understand such operational behaviors as mech-anni는 of phase change, and flow patterns inside a tilted thermosyphon. For experiment, an ethanol thermosyphon with a 35% of fill charge rate was designed and manufactured, using a copper tube with a diameter 19mm and a length 1500mm. Through a series of test, the tilt angle was kept constant at each of 4 different values in the range 10~25deg. and the heat supply to the evaporator was stepwisely increased up to 30㎾/$m^2$. When a steady state was established to the thermosyphon for each step of thermal loads, the wall temperature distribution and vapor temperature at the condenser were measured. The wall temperature distributions demonstrated a formation of dry patch in the top end zone of the evaporator, with a values of temperature 20~4$0^{\circ}C$ higher than the wetted surface for a moderate heat flux q≒20㎾/$m^2$. Inspite of the presence of hot dry patch, however, the mean values of boiling heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator wall were still in a good agreement with those predicted by Rohsenow's formula, which was based on nucleate boiling. For the condenser, the wall temperatures were practically uniform, and the measured values of condensation heat transfer coefficient were 1.7 times higher than the predicted values obtained from Nusselt's film condensation theory on tilted plate. Using those two expressions, a correlation was formulated as a function of heat flux and tilt angle, to determine the total thermal resistance of a tilted thermosyphon. The correlation formula showed a good agreement with the experimental data within 20%.
