  • The formulas for the perturbation analysis with modes of close eigenvalues are derived in this paper. Emphasis is made on the consistency of the straightforward perturbation process, given the complete terms of perturbations in the zeroth-order, which is a form of Rayleigh quotient, and in the higher-orders. By dividing the perturbation of eigenvector into two parts, the first-order perturbation with respect to the modes of close eigenvalues is moved into the zeroth-order perturbation. The normality condition is employed to compute the higher-order perturbations of eigenvector. The algorithm can be condensed to a single mode with a distinct eigenvalue, and this can accelerate the convergence of the perturbation analysis. The example confirms that the perturbation approximation obtained from the suggested procedure is in a good accuracy on the eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and normality.

  • Variations in system parameters due to uncertainties may result in system performance deterioration. Uncertainties in modeling of structures are often considered to ensure that control system is robust with respect to response errors. Hence, the uncertain concept plays an important role in vibration control of the engineering structures. The paper discusses the robustness of the stability of vibration control systems with uncertain parameters. The vibration control problem of an uncertain system is approximated by a deterministic one. The uncertain parameters are described by interval variables. The uncertain state matrix is constructed directly using system physical parameters and avoided to use bounds in Euclidean norm. The feedback gain matrix is determined based on the deterministic systems, and then it is applied to the actual uncertain systems. A method to calculate the upper and lower bounds of eigenvalues of the close-loop system with uncertain parameters is presented. The lower bounds of eigenvalues can be used to estimate the robustness of the stability the controlled system with uncertain parameters. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the applications of the present approach.

  • It is most important in small signal stability analysis of large scale power systems to compute only the dominant eigenvalues selectively with numerical stability and efficiency. Hessenberg process is numerically very stable and identifies the largest eigenvalues in magnitude. Hence, transformed system matrix must be used with the process. Inverse transformation with complex shift provides high selectivity centered on the shift, but does not possess the desired property of computing the dominant mode first. Thus, advantage of high selectivity of the transformation can be fully utilized only when the complex shift is given close to the dominant eigenvalues. In this paper, complex shift is determined by Fourier transforming the results of dynamic simulation with PTI's PSS/E transient simulation program. The convergence in Hessenberg process is accelerated using the iterative scheme. Overall, a numerically stable and very efficient small signal stability program is obtained. The stability and efficiency of the program has been validated against New England 10-machines 39-bus system and KEPCO system.

  • In small signal stability analysis of power systems, eigenvalue analysis is the most useful method and the detailed modeling of generator has an important effect to the eigenvalues. Generator full model is used for precise dynamic analysis of generators and controllers while two-axis model is used for multi-machine systems because of the reduced order of the state matrix. Also, the eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients are used for optimizing controller parameters to improve system stability. This paper compare the first and second order eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of controllers using generator full model with those of two-axis model. As a result of an example, the estimated eigenvalues using the first and the second eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients using generator full model is very close to those of state matrix. Also the error ratios throughout a wide range of controller parameters is less than $1\%$.

  • This paper presents a procedure for designing feedback controllers for defective systems with repeated eigenvalues, and also for a nearly defective system with close eigenvalues. For the nearly defective system, we first transform it into a defective one, and then apply the same method to deal with the nearly defective system. A method for computing the gain matrices is discussed here. The methodologies proposed are based on the modal coordinate equation to avoid the tedious mathematical manipulation. As an application of the present procedure, a numerical example is given.

  • We introduce a new projector for accelerating convergence of a symmetric eigenvalue problem Ax = x, and devise a power/Lanczos hybrid algorithm. Acceleration can be achieved by removing the hard-to-annihilate nonsolution eigencomponents corresponding to the widespread eigenvalues with modulus close to 1, by estimating them accurately using the Lanczos method. However, the additional Lanczos results can be obtained without expensive matrix-vector multiplications but a very small amount of extra work, by utilizing simple power-Lanczos interconversion algorithms suggested. Numerical experiments are given at the end.

  • An efficient solution method is presented to solve the eigenvalue problem arising in tile dynamic analysis of non-proportionally damped structural systems with multiple or close eigenvalues. The proposed method is obtained by applying the modified Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the quadratic eigenvalue problem. Even if the shift value is an eigenvalue of the system, the proposed method guarantees nonsingularity, which is analytically proved. The initial values of the proposed method can be taken as the intermediate results of iteration methods or results of approximate methods. Two numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results are compared with those of the well-known subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method.

  • National-wide and/or large scale sample surveys generally use complex sample design. Traditional Pearson chi-square test is not appropriate for the categorical complex sample data. Rao-Scott suggested an adjustment method for Pearson chi-square test, which uses the average of eigenvalues of design matrix of cell probabilities. This study is to compare the efficiency of Rao-Scott first order adjusted test to Wald test for homogeneity between two populations using 2009 Gyeongnam regional education offices's customer satisfaction survey (2009 GREOCSS) data. The 2009 GREOCSS data were collected based on stratified three-stage cluster sampling with probability proportional to size. The empirical results show that the Rao-Scott adjusted test statistic using only the variances of cell probabilities is very close to the Wald test statistic, which uses the covariance matrix of cell probabilities, under the 2009 GREOCSS data based. However it is necessary to be cautious to use the Rao-Scott first order adjusted test statistic in the place of Wald test because its efficiency is decreasing as the relative variance of eigenvalues of the design matrix of cell probabilities is increasing, specially more when the number of degrees of freedom is small.

  • The alpha eigenvalue problem in multigroup neutron diffusion is studied with particular attention to the theoretical analysis of the model. Contrary to previous literature results, the existence of eigenvalue and eigenflux clustering is investigated here without the simplification of a unique fissile isotope or a single emission spectrum. A discussion about the negative decay constants of the neutron precursors concentrations as potential eigenvalues is provided. An in-hour equation is derived by a perturbation approach recurring to the steady state adjoint and direct eigenvalue problems of the effective multiplication factor and is used to suggest proper detection criteria of flux clustering. In spite of the prior work, the in-hour equation results give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the eigenvalue-eigenvector pair. A simplified asymptotic analysis is used to predict bands of accumulation of eigenvalues close to the negative decay constants of the precursors concentrations. The resolution of the problem in one-dimensional heterogeneous problems shows numerical evidence of the predicted clustering occurrences and also confirms previous theoretical analysis and numerical results.
