Time synchronization plays an important role in mobile communication systems, particularly, when an accurate time-division mechanism among the communication entities is required. We present a new time synchronization algorithm for a wireless mobile ad-hoc network assuming that communication link is managed by a time-slot reservation-based medium access control protocol. The central idea is to reduce time synchronization packet collisions by exploiting the advantages found in reference broadcasting. In addition, we adopt a sophisticated clock updating scheme to ensure the time synchronization convergence. To verify the performance of our algorithm, a set of network simulations has been performed under various mobile ad-hoc network scenarios using the OPNET. The results obtained from the simulations show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional TSF method in terms of synchronization accuracy and convergence time.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of $AS_2O_3$ upon antiangiogenesis in rat cornea, to examine it\`s possible application as an anticancer drug and to provide basic data for further studies of antiangiogenetic mechanism of $AS_2O_3$ . Angiogenesis was induced by cornea micropocket assay, as previously described. Sixteen of forty-eight eyes of Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups, namely, only a bFGF group(control group), and a group treated by $AS_2O_3$ ($AS_2O_3$ group). After pellet implantation, we measured the number of new vessels, vessel length and clock hour of neovascularization, and area of neovascularization was determined using a mathematical formula. New vessels growing began at day 3, number of vessels in $AS_2O_3$ group were significantly more less than those in control group (p<0.05). The length of vessels of $AS_2O_3$ group was significantly shorter than that of control group after day 3(p<0.05). The clock hours of all group were slowly increased at all days but $AS_2O_3$ group was inhibited more than control group. Neovascularization areas of $AS_2O_3$ group were more significantly inhibited than those of control group (p<0.05). This study showed that $AS_2O_3$ had powerful antiangiogenetic effects and it would be useful in the choice of anticancer drug.

Reference Broadcast Synchronization (RBS) is one of the most prominent synchronization protocols in wireless sensor nework. Given that the broadcasting medium is available, RBS can give very high accuracy of synchronization. However, RBS uses instantaneous synchronization and results in time discontinuity, which might cause serious faults in the distributed system. Also, RBS lacks packet loss tolerance, which brings about degraded performance in severe conditions of wireless channel. In this paper, the problem of time discontinuity in RBS is pointed out and the effect of packet loss on the performance of RBS is examined. Then, a continuous synchronization and a packet loss tolerance mechanism for RBS are proposed, and the result is verified through simulations.

The circadian clock regulates various physiological processes, including bone metabolism. The nuclear receptors Reverbs, comprising Rev-erbα and Rev-erbβ, play a key role as transcriptional regulators of the circadian clock. In this study, we demonstrate that Rev-erbs negatively regulate differentiation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The knockdown of Rev-erbα in osteoclast precursor cells enhanced receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast formation, as well as expression of nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1), osteoclast-associated receptor (OSCAR), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). The overexpression of Rev-erbα leads to attenuation of the NFATc1 expression via inhibition of recruitment of c-Fos to the NFATc1 promoter. The overexpression of Rev-erbα in osteoblast precursors attenuated the expression of osteoblast marker genes including Runx2, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone sialoprotein (BSP), and osteocalcin (OC). Rev-erbα interfered with the recruitment of Runx2 to the promoter region of the target genes. Conversely, knockdown of Rev-erbα in the osteoblast precursors enhanced the osteoblast differentiation and function. In addition, Rev-erbα negatively regulated osteoclast and osteoblast differentiation by suppressing the p38 MAPK pathway. Furthermore, intraperitoneal administration of GSK4112, a Rev-erb agonist, protects RANKL-induced bone loss via inhibition of osteoclast differentiation in vivo. Taken together, our results demonstrate a molecular mechanism of Rev-erbs in the bone remodeling, and provide a molecular basis for a potential therapeutic target for treatment of bone disease characterized by excessive bone resorption.

A new LFSR based test compression scheme is proposed by reducing the maximum number of specified bits in the test cube set, smax, virtually. The performance of a conventional LFSR reseeding scheme highly depends on smax. In this paper, by using different clock frequencies between an LFSR and scan chains, and grouping the scan cells, we could reduce smax virtually. H the clock frequency which is slower than the clock frequency for the scan chain by n times is used for LFSR, successive n scan cells are filled with the same data; such that the number of specified bits can be reduced with an efficient grouping of scan cells. Since the efficiency of the proposed scheme depends on the grouping mechanism, a new graph-based scan cell grouping heuristic has been proposed. The simulation results on the largest ISCAS 89 benchmark circuit show that the proposed scheme requires less memory storage with significantly smaller area overhead compared to the previous test compression schemes.
The Hippocratic database model recently proposed by Agrawal et al. incorporates privacy protection capabilities into relational databases. Since the Hippocratic database is based on the relational database, it needs extensions to be adapted for XML databases. In this paper, we propose the Hippocratic XML database model, an extension of the Hippocratic database model for XML databases and present an efficient access control mechanism under this model. In contrast to relational data, XML data have tree-like hierarchies. Thus, in order to manage these hierarchies of XML data, we extend and formally define such concepts presented in the Hippocratic database model as privacy preferences, privacy policies, privacy authorizations, and usage purposes of data records. Next, we present a new mechanism, which we call the authorization index, that is used in the access control mechanism. This authorization index, which is Implemented using a multi-dimensional index, allows us to efficiently search authorizations implied by the authorization granted on the nearest ancestor using the nearest neighbor search technique. Using synthetic and real data, we have performed extensive experiments comparing query processing time with those of existing access control mechanisms. The results show that the proposed access control mechanism improves the wall clock time by up to 13.6 times over the top-down access control strategy and by up to 20.3 times over the bottom-up access control strategy The major contributions of our paper are 1) extending the Hippocratic database model into the Hippocratic XML database model and 2) proposing an efficient across control mechanism that uses the authorization index and nearest neighbor search technique under this model.
This paper presents a design and implementation of realtime video player that operates on a tiled-display system consisting of multiple PCs to provide a very large and high resolution display. In the proposed system, the master process transmits a compressed video stream to multiple PCs using UDP multicast. All slaves(PC) receive the same video stream, decompress, clip their designated areas from the decompressed video frame, and display it to their displays while being synchronized with each other. A simple synchronization mechanism based on the H/W clock of each slave is proposed to avoid the skew between the tiles of the display, and a flow-control mechanism based on the bit-rate of the video stream and a pre-buffering scheme are proposed to prevent the jitter The proposed system is implemented with Microsoft DirectX filter technology in order to decouple the video/audio codec from the player.
Colorectal cancer has become the third most common cancer and leads to high mortality worldwide. Although colorectal cancer has been studied widely, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. PER3 is related to tumor differentiation and the progression of colorectal cancer. High expression of miR-103 is associated with poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. However, the relationship between miR-103 and PER3 in CRC cells remains unclear. In this study, we found that PER3 was downregulated in CRC tissues and CRC cell lines, whereas miR-103 was upregulated in CRC cell lines. We also found that PER3 promoted CRC cells apoptosis. These results indicate that PER3 plays a suppressive role in CRC cells. Moreover, we found that PER3 was targeted, at least partially, by miR-103. Taken together, we provide evidence to characterize the role of PER3 in CRC, which may be a new therapeutic target for CRC.

Blooms of Chattonella species are normally during summer in inland seas with high nutrients from the land and inflowing water. These blooms cause mass fish kills worldwide. We isolated a Chattonella strain from the south coast of Korea and identified it as C. antiqua. It is known that the morphological changes of phytoplankton correspond to the diurnal vertical migrations that follow an intrinsic biological clock and a nutrient acquisition mechanism during the day and night. In electron micrographs, C. antiqua clearly showed a radial distribution of lipid bodies in subcellular regions and plastids composed in which thylakoid layers were perpendicular to the surface. A single pyrenoid was present in each plastid and it was found at the end of the plastid towards the center of the cell. Throughout the day, plastids of C. antiqua cells appeared as an expanded net-like recticulum. During the night, however, the plastids changed their shape and contracted toward the cell periphery. The electron density of pyrenoids was increased in cells harvested during the night.

The preservation of temporal dependencies among a group of processes that exchange continuous media at runtime is a key issue for emerging mobile distributed systems (MDS), such as monitoring of biosignals and interactive multiuser games. Although several works are oriented to satisfy temporal dependencies, most of them are not suitable for MDSs. In general, an MDS is characterized by the absence of global references (e.g. shared memory and wall clock), host mobility, limited processing and storage capabilities in mobile hosts, and limited bandwidth on wireless communication channels. This paper proposes an asymmetric synchronization protocol to be used at runtime in an MDS without using a common reference. One main aspect of our synchronization protocol is that it translates temporal constraints to causal dependencies of the continuous media data as seen by the mobile hosts. We simulate the protocol by considering a cellular network environment and by using MPEG-4 encoders. The simulation results show that our protocol is effective in reducing the synchronization error. In addition, the protocol is efficient in terms of processing and storage costs at the mobile devices, as well as in the overhead attached per message across the wired and wireless channels.
