Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to understand the organizational culture of nurses by categorizing nurses' experience of coping with bullying in the workplace through Q methodology and analyzing the characteristics of each type, and to induce correct policy measures and interventions to create an atmosphere created in the nursing clinical field to be more advanced and positive. Methods: To form the Q population, focus group interviews were conducted with nurses working for more than six months at two general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Interviews were conducted by 12 nurses introduced to participants who can provide researchers with a wealth of information on workplace bullying experiences without filtration. In addition, the Q population was extracted by reviewing the results. Based on the results derived from this, 38 Q statements in total were extracted. Forty clinical nurses were required to classify Q sample statements, and the data collected through this were analyzed using the pc-QUANAL program. Results: As a result of the analysis, a total of five types of clinical nurses' experiences of coping with bullying in the workplace were identified: 'tense emotion-based tolerance response,' 'positive thinking-based self-effort response', 'individualistic thinking-based passive response', 'support system-based emotional expression response' and 'active response centered on problem-solving'. Conclusion: The derived response types are expected to be guidelines for suggesting strategies to eradicate bullying in the workplace at the organizational level, individual level, prevention level, and organizational culture level.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify job experiences of male hospital nurses. Methods: Data were collected from 20 male nurses working at general hospitals, through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The interviews were recorded and subsequently transcribed verbatim. Using content analysis, data were coded and categorized. Results: The analyzed domains were motivations for choosing nursing, occupational experiences (3 subdomains), and attitudes toward the future. A total of 85 significant statements were selected from the data and classified into 32 categories. The nurses' motivations for choosing nursing were advantages of employment, their aptitude, scarcity value of men, professionalism and job security, good promotion, stable income, and family influence. In occupational experiences, they were assigned to special fields and dissatisfied with vertical relationship, promotion system, their salary, and gaps in military service time; they had difficulties in adapting to female-dominated groups and encountered gender role stereotype and preconception; they were satisfied with their distinguished performance, but had damaged self-esteem, and were stressed and disappointed in their work. In their attitudes toward the future, they considered their career changes, but tried to make professional and personal advancement. Conclusion: These findings have implications for recruiting and retaining male nurses in clinical settings.

Purpose: This study was aimed to explore and describe the experiences of mindfulness meditation (mindfulness- based stress reduction, MBSR) among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) as a method of cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: In-depth interviews was conducted with 7 participants with CAD post percutaneous coronary intervention. Main question was 'what is your experiences with MBSR?' Colaizzi's seven steps of phenomenological analysis was used for eliciting embedded meanings. Results: Five theme clusters were found; rediscovery of mindfulness meditation, obtaining self-control for stress management, self-worth, feeling of happiness, and looking into myself. Conclusion: This study provides a profound picture on the experiences of mindfulness meditation among participants with coronary artery disease. MBSR can help patients with CAD in reducing stress and to enhance their cardiac rehabilitations. It is hoped that mindfulness meditation can be used in clinical setting as a part of cardiac rehabilitation program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing college students who attended delivery practices at midwifery clinic. Methods: This was a qualitative study using focus groups. Data were collected by group interviews with a total of 12 students who observed natural childbirth at midwifery clinic. Data were analyzed through Colaizzi's method in which meaningful statements were extracted. Results: The meanings of experiences were identified five theme clusters from thirteen themes and thirty-one sub-themes. The five theme clusters were 'ultimate process of natural childbirth', 'allowed birth', 'role recognition of the midwife', 'positively changed perception', and 'barriers'. Conclusion: This study showed that observation of delivery at midwifery clinic was helpful for nursing students in terms of positive impression about natural childbirth with maternal and baby being centered. Nursing students expressed value and concern about delivery at midwifery clinic. Further in-depth study of natural childbirth in terms of husband and family perspective is required. For quality improvement of maternity nursing care, natural childbirth process needs to be included in nursing care at hospitals as well as students' clinical practicum.
Purpose: This study elicited Korean students' experiences of nursing practice at geriatric hospitals. Method: A purposive sample of 26 Korean nursing students was recruited from K College of Nursing located in Daegu, Korea. Inclusion criteria were nursing students who: 1) finished nursing practice at geriatric hospitals, 2) were oriented and communicable, and 3) understood research purpose and agreed to participate in this study. Individuals were interviewed using Q-methodology. Results: The majority of the participants had experience of living with the elderly and volunteering related to elder care. Data analysis showed that participants' experiences of nursing practices were consisted of three types: skill acquiring-oriented, relationship-oriented, and practice system-oriented. Conclusion: Nursing practices at geriatric hospitals provided opportunities of having positive attitude toward the elderly for nursing students. Nursing students' experiences were divided into at least three different types. Nursing educators need to develop curriculum for gerontological nursing practice tailoring to theses differences.
The purpose of this study was to understand how patients experience their nurses, healing relation-ships. The 33 participants were patients who had been admitted to a general nursing unit of a university hospital in Seoul for more than one week, understood the study purpose and agreed take part, were fully conscious, able to communicate and over 20 years of age , their health was improving and they were ready for discharge. The data for this descriptive study using ground theory approach were collected by direct interviews with patients using five main questions derived from the literature and clinical experiences about their experiences of their nurses, healing relationships during hospitalization. Van Kaam’s method was used to analyse the data audio-recorded. Interpretation was enhanced consultations with two supervisors and one head nurse with a master’s degrees in nursing science, one nursing professor and one nursing docotoral candidate. Twenty - four patients said that they had formed a healing relationship with a nurse and nine said their relationship was not healing relationship. Six categories emerging from the characterizations of the healing relationships were valuable gratifying comforting trusting close and sympathetic. Descriptions of non - healing relationships were classified as none and poor. For this group of hospitalized patients nurses’ healing relationships were defined as valuable gratifying comforting trusting close as sym-Pathetic. Since the data suggest a change in the experiences during hospitalization, a gronded theory approach is recommended for further study.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe work experiences of triage nurses working at emergency departments in Korea. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research method was used. Twenty-one nurses of emergency department participated in the first interview and 16 of them participated in the second interview. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes. Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze the data. Results: Forty-eight codes, 12 categories, and six themes emerged from the data analysis: caring on the frontline, burden as an initial evaluator, handling things alone, lack of others' understanding, becoming an expert, and needs for improvement. Participating triage nurses faced many challenges and difficult situations in emergency departments. They felt burden and loneliness as initial evaluator. Also, they felt pride in their work and struggled to become a professional. Conclusion: This study is the first qualitative study that has focused on exploring the experiences of triage nurses in emergency departments in Korea. The results provide description and in-depth understanding of working experiences of triage nurses. The results provide valuable fundamental data for regulation, clinical practice, education, and research for triage nurses in Korean emergency departments.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery. Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used for the data analysis. Patients who had spinal surgery were included in this study. The data was collected between April and October 2022 by conducting a one-on-one, in-depth interview. Results: Five theme clusters were identified based on the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery: "An agonizing life changed by pain", "Efforts to alleviate the pain", "Surgery was determined to be the best way to relieve pain", "Recovered daily life after relieving pain caused by surgery", and "Dedicated to living a healthy, pain-free life". The analysis further yielded 20 themes. Patients used various treatment methods to relieve pain, but ultimately chose surgery due to unbearable pain. Patients who had spinal surgery felt grateful that they were feeling good and healthy because they could return to their normal daily lives. After all, the pain was relieved after the surgery. Even though some pain remained unrelieved, the patients had the hope of getting better through exercise and rehabilitation. Conclusion: This study provides an in-depth understanding and meaning of the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery and presents new perspectives on clinical practice. The findings of this study are expected to be useful in developing and applying systematic and customized nursing interventions before and after spinal surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the process of overcoming professional burnout among clinical nurses. Methods: Data were collected from 12 clinical nurses through in-depth interviews about their actual experiences. The main question was "How do you describe your experience of the process of overcoming professional burnout?" Qualitative data from the field notes and transcribed notes were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology developed by Strauss & Corbin. Results: The core category of experience of the process of professional burnout among clinical nurses was identified as "Keeping a balance by awakening-relaxing-coexisting". The participants used six interactional strategies such as 'Confronting problems', 'Exposing problems', 'Laying the mind's burdens down', 'Taking a breather', 'Seeing from a different perspective', 'Accepting realities'. The results of overcoming process of professional burnout were 'Coexisting' and 'Revitalizing'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for designing supportive programs and policies to solve professional burnout in clinical nurses.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effects of clinical practice stress on clinical practice satisfaction and to provide basic data for clinical practice improvement strategies. Methods: 150 students who had clinical experiences in Daegu Health College from June 12 to August 11, 2017 were selected by convenience sampling method and analyzed 130 questionnaires excluding 20 incomplete questionnaires. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) 22.0 for windows Results: The satisfaction on major and the type of residentice showed statistically significant effect on the clinical practice satisfaction. The training environment in practice and the interpersonal relationship conflicts mostly effect on clinical practice satisfaction. Conclusion : In order to increase the clinical practice satisfaction, it is necessary to consider ways to improve the practical training environment and reduce interpersonal conflicts.
