Background: Various studies have evaluated the relationship between X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) Arg399Gln polymorphism and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk, but the conclusions have been inconsistent and underpowered. The purpose of this updated meta-analysis was to examine whether XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism confers susceptibility to HCC. Methods: Eligible studies extracted from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, VIP (chinese) and CNKI (chinese) up to November 2013 were included in the study. Pooled odds ratio (OR) together with their 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated to evaluate XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism and HCC risk. Results: Finally, 21 studies with 4,170 cases and 5,030 controls were involved in our meta-analysis. The results demonstrated that there was significant association between Arg399Gln polymorphism and HCC risk under two contrast models in overall populations (AG vs GG: OR=1.265, 95%CI=1.036-1.545, p=0.021; AA+AG vs GG: OR=1.240, 95%CI=1.021-1.506, p=0.030). In subgroup analyses, significant association was found in Asians (A vs G: OR=1.175, 95%CI=1.013-1.362, p=0.033; AG vs GG: OR=1.317, 95%CI=1.070-1.622, p=0.009; AA+AG vs GG: OR=1.289, 95%CI=1.055-1.575, p=0.013) and Caucasians (A vs G: OR=0.591, 95%CI=0.361-0.966, p=0.036; AA+AG vs GG: OR=0.468, 95%CI=0.234-0.934, p=0.031). Conclusions: The results suggest that XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism may increase HCC risk especially among Asians. However, XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism might act as a protective role against HCC among Caucasians.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship among ego resilience, the problem solving process and clinical competency in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 265 nursing students in D city. Measures were ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. Data was analyzed using frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, person's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. Result: The Ego resilience score of subjects was 2.80 out of a perfect score of 4, the problem solving process score of subjects was 3.12, and the clinical competency score of subjects was 3.49 out of a perfect score of 5. There was a significant positive correlation among ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. The significant predictors of problem solving process and clinical competency were ego resilience. Conclusion: These findings indicate that there is a need to increase ego resilience to improve the problem solving process and clinical competency of nursing students. The results should be reflected in the development of effective curricula.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the mediating effect of critical thinking dispositions in the relationship between ego-resilience and clinical practice competency. Method: This study used a descriptive design with a survey method. A total of 193 nursing students were recruited from 4 colleges of nursing in C city, and A and B province in Korea. The data was collected using questionnaires from October 6, 2017 to October 24, 2017. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis. Result: There were showed significant positive relationships of clinical practice competency with ego-resilience. In addition, critical thinking dispositions had a partial mediating role in the relationship between ego-resilience and clinical practice competency. Conclusion: This study identified the mediating effects of critical thinking dispositions and how to improve clinical practice competency. The results of this study can be used as basic data for establishing an educational approach to enhance clinical practice competency, which is considered a key competency for nursing college students.

Purpose: In this study, behavioral styles of Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness (DISC) were examined and differences in job satisfaction and clinical competence among newly hired nurses were explored. Methods: For this explanatory correlational research, 176 newly hired clinical nurses were recruited from three university hospitals and one general hospital located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Data were collected in August, 2013 though self-report questionnaires. Results: The distribution of behavioral styles was 11.4%, 42%, 29% and 17.6% for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness respectively. DISC behavioral styles were associated with sub-areas of job satisfaction such as professional position and doctor-nurse relationship. DISC behavioral styles were significantly associated with the total score for clinical competence and sub-areas of data collection, basic nursing skills, critical thinking, education and leadership, and attitudes toward professional development and practical skills. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that DISC behavioral styles predicted clinical competence (Adj. $R^2$=.14, F=9.42, p<.001). Conclusion: A focus on cultivating influential and steady behavioral styles among newly hired nurses can be helpful in improving job satisfaction and clinical competence. There is a need to improve interpersonal relationships through a deeper understanding of each person's behavioral style based on the analysis of DISC behavioral styles.
Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to characterize the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses and to elucidate the mediating effects of the nurse-parent partnership on that relationship. Methods: The subjects of the study were 174 nurses who had worked in a pediatric ward in a university hospital, general hospital, or children's hospital. Data were collected from June 20, 2016 to August 10, 2016 and analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and three-step mediated regression analysis in SPSS version 22.0 for Windows. Results: The nurse-parent partnership had significant effects on clinical decision-making and job satisfaction, with an explanatory power of 19% and 26%, respectively. The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction (Sobel test: Z=4.31, p<.001). Conclusion: The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses. Therefore, in order to improve the job satisfaction of pediatric nurses, it is necessary to develop effective educational programs and strategies to address their clinical decision-making and their experiences of the nurse-parent partnership.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the contamination level of uniforms with nasal colonization of Staphylococcus aureus before and after the clinical practice of nursing students. Methods: This study was a survey research, conducting microbial culture by smearing the front surface and the pockets of uniforms, and the nasal cavity both before and after clinical practice on 70 nursing students. For the analysis, descriptive statistics, chi-square test, paired t-test were used for statistical analysis using SPSS 19.0. Results: The contamination level of uniforms increased more significantly after clinical practice on the front surface (p=.008) and pockets (p=.031) than before clinical practice, and Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterobacter aerogenes were detected. Conclusion: Through the results above, it is believed that it is reasonable to do the laundering of clinical uniforms of nursing students once a week. Because it is possible to disseminate disease germs with the contamination of clinical practice uniforms in a hospital environment, it is necessary to offer education for the laundering of uniforms with appropriate management.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effectiveness of fundamental nursing practices in clinical settings. Method: This study adopted the triangulation method. Using one group pre-post test design, this study identified differences in self efficacy between pre and post clinical practice. The study was also designed to describe the nursing student's experience of clinical practice by using content analysis Results: 1) All students experienced bedmaking, BST check, V/C check, positioning, transferring, assisting with moving and positioning, and ROM. Sixty percent of students experienced giving oral care, and forty percent experienced shampooing patient's hair. 2) While the mean score of self efficacy was 3.88 in the pre-test, it decreased to 3.76 in the post-test. They were statistically different from each other. 3) Seven categories were elicited from the result of content analysis on the nursing student's experience, which were 'ignorant stranger', 'facing the gap between theory and practice', 'resolving the uncertainty of clinical setting', 'getting used to fundamental nursing practice', 'motivated by a desire to study and self-development', 'understanding the nursing profession's job', and 'being helpful for the future career'. Conclusion: Fundamental nursing practice in clinical settings is a useful strategy that improves fundamental nursing skills and motivates student's self-development.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the conceptual structure of stressors experienced by nursing students during clinical practice. Methods: Ten men and 10 women nursing college students were interviewed. The results were 208 ideas. By synthesizing and editing these ideas, the final statement was trimmed down to 39 questions. The next step was to have the participants classify these 39 final questions. They were asked to rate stress scores using a five-point scale. Through multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis yielded dimensions and clusters. Results: Results of the study showed 2 dimensions which were classified as 'interpersonal relationship-practice system' and 'identity-practice environment'. It also yielded 8 clusters which were classified as 'role confusion', 'gender discrimination', 'attitudes of medical personnel and patients', 'comparison between fellow students', 'difference between theory and practice', 'disestablishing the role of practice guide', 'interference with training', and 'problems of the practice environment'. Further, stress factors and stress levels were differentiated depending on the gender of the student. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that educators who are developing clinical practice programs and clinical practitioners should consider stressors during clinical practice and the educational implications to nursing students.
Objective: This study aimed to ascertain what should be considered in the "Guideline for Clinical Trials with Herbal Medicinal Products for Liver Cancer," by analyzing existing guidelines and clinical trials. Methods: Committee for the development of a guideline, consisting of 6 Korean medicine doctors, reviewed guidelines and clinical trials on using herbal medicine for treating liver cancer. The trials were analyzed in terms of inclusion and exclusion of participants, intervention, comparators, outcomes, and trial design. We then compared the results of our analysis with the guidelines to identify issues we must to consider when following the "Guideline for Clinical Trials with Herbal Medicinal Products for Liver Cancer." Several guidelines for antitumor agents and clinical trials on herbal medicine were obtained from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety homepage, etc. The search terms were as follows: "liver neoplasms"; "herbal medicine"; "medicine, Korean traditional"; and "medicine, Chinese Traditional.". Results: Ten articles were obtained from pubmed and Embase. There was no guideline for clinical trials on using herbal medicine for treating liver cancer. All the participants in the reviewed articles had primary liver cancer, and the type of intervention varied (e.g., decoction, patches, and capsules. The comparators included placebos and conventional treatments such as chemotherapy. The outcome assessment methods were tumor response, quality of life, survival, and liver function tests. Adverse events occuring during the trial were also evaluated. Conclusion: Findings were derived by reviewing existing guidelines and comparing them with clinical trials on liver cancer and herbal medicinal products. These results will be utilized in the development of the "Guideline for Clinical Trials with Herbal Medicinal Products for Liver Cancer."
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to establish effective clinical training programs by identifying various factors that influence the satisfaction of physical therapy students with those programs. Methods: The study subjects were 205 students from six colleges (two 4-year and four 3-year colleges) who participated in clinical training programs. The colleges have physical therapy departments and are located in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeognam. A survey consisting of 75 questions was conducted between March and December, 2003. Survey responses were analyzed through a frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and the multiple responses approach, and correlations among the questions were analyzed using a chi-square test. Results: The level of satisfaction with clinical training programs did not differ according to the school system or the size of the clinical training institution. However, several factors led to a higher level of satisfaction, including more active participation of students in the clinical training, more intensive instruction from school professors, a larger number of subjects to complete before the clinical training, and a higher level of student perception that their institution's clinical training program was systematic Conclusion: This study surveyed physical therapy students located in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam who attended selected schools and training institutions that have their own individual characteristics; therefore, this study may have limitations for comparative analysis. However, if more extensive studies are per formed regionally in the future using the approach taken here, clinical training programs could be developed that can satisfy both schools and the industry.
