  • Purpose: This study focused on two aspects: 1) how to design and implement a mobile learning course which is facilitated by a PDA with a web-based class homepage as a tool for mobile learning; 2) how to increase and enhance interactive activities among and between the students and the faculty members by utilizing a PDA as a tool for communication as well as collaboration. Method: To analyze the results of the m-Learning course, data was collected from interviews with the involved two faculty members and a survey from 27 students. Result: The results showed a positive outcome of the m-Learning approach in terms of a more collaborative learning environment in a clinical course where the students practice their clinical activities out of the classroom, far from their faculty members. On the other hand, the problems of the m-Learning approach were that more thorough preparation was needed for the new tools from both the students and the faculty members in preparation in social, cultural, and mental aspects, not withstanding the assumed technical limits of a PDA. Conclusion: m-Learning must be more actively implemented in classes, even though several problems were noticed in terms of both technical aspects of the tools, and social and cultural aspects from the users.

  • Among five types of the model textbook based on storytelling, the type of 'Inquiry into history of Mathematics' focuses on adapting the logic of mathematical discovery to the organization of mathematical contents. It enables students to recognize that mathematics has been developed by human needs and creativity while they are engaged in the story about knowledge formation. Moreover the textbook offers the context in which students are able to understand mathematical insights and logics hidden in the subject matter, so that they can reinvent and develop mathematical knowledge. In this study, we found the principles for development of the textbook based on storytelling for 'Inquiry into History of Mathematics' by analyzing the chapter about 'Complex number and Quadratic Equations' of the model textbook. The chapter was implemented in classroom environment and students' understanding of the subject matter and their perception on the textbook based on storytelling were surveyed before and after the implementation. The results showed the possibilities of adapting the textbook based on storytelling and we suggested some implications for further development.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the concern of the primary school teachers and the teaching situation about the environmental education through questionnaire survey on the effective environmental education. The results of questionnaire were analysed and discussed to provide the effective teaching method for the environmental education. The result of this study is as follows. 1. It was found that teachers want to teach environmental lessons as a special subject, and the content of the environmental lessons in textbook was not enough in quantity, the living waste was the most serious ploblem. Owing to the lacking in materials for the lectures on environmental education, most teachers collect the material depending on the mass communication. Also they were more interested in the environmental lessons rather than the other lessons in textbook. But because of the lacking in administrative assistance, they have difficulty in conducting the effective environmental education. 2. The teaching method of the environmental education in most primary schools was a all together-type lecture in classroom. Owing to conducting the environmental education for the knowledge than the action through the extra activity, it was difficult to expect the effect of the environmental education. Also the rate of using the reflection materials which can be improved the studying effect was very low. 3. For the effective environmental education most teachers wanted the spot learnings and the case studies and teacher education and training to get an special knowledge for environmental education. The effective evaluation method for children's environmental education is to present the results by environmental experiences and practices and to formulate a system education is organized for the effective management and activation of environmental education. 4. By practising the seasonal spot learnings, students need to change of learning method and to realize the importance of environment through own self-experiences. 5. In the future, it is desirable that researching of an environmental education is offered the effective practising teaching method which is improving the development of customs and functions, cultivation of the sense of value, ability to solve the problem, to determine the intention as well as the survey on the real situation and the consciousness about environmental education.

  • Although cooperative learning strategies in many subject areas have been found to be effective, the effect of cooperative learning on academic achievement in science laboratory setting is not clear. Reported results on the effects of the strategies for higher achieving students are not also consistent. In this study, the cooperative learning strategies emphasizing student-centered learning which included higher order thinking activities were used in a elementary school science course. The cooperative and traditional learning groups were selected from fifth-grade classes, and taught about dissolution and solution for 16 class periods. The effects of the cooperative learning strategies upon students' academic achievement, science process skill, the attitude toward science instruction, and the perceptions of classroom environment were investigated. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the test scores of academic achievement and science process skill for the cooperative learning group were significantly higher than those of the traditional learning group. No interaction between the instruction and the level of previous achievement was found. The perceptions of confliction were higher in cooperative learning group. In the attitude toward science instruction and the perceptions of participation, however, no significant difference between the two groups was found. Educational implications are discussed.

  • With the proven benefits of and increased interest in using technology in education, the role of teachers has become more important in integrating technology into mathematics classroom. Thus, it is important to improve preservice teachers' technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK), which are influenced by their beliefs. This study examines how preservice secondary mathematics teachers' experience and beliefs related to technology use in the mathematics classrooms impact their TPACK. The results of this study show that preservice teachers who have more experience using technology and who hold student-centered beliefs towards technology use display higher levels of technology-related knowledge than preservice teachers who have little experience and who hold teacher-centered beliefs. Understanding the relationships between preservice teachers' TPACK and beliefs provides insights into how teacher education programs can support preservice teachers to develop TPACK and integrate technology into their future mathematics instruction.

  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) problems are not limited to large office buildings that are inadequately operated. In fact, many school buildings have significant potentials of air pollution and indoor air pollutants may be of particular concern because it is estimated that most young students who are physically weak to the pollutants spend about 90% of their time in classrooms. The goal of the study is to provide academic and architectural information on the major factors that influence indoor air quality in the elementary school. In order to gain a better understanding of IAQ problems in schools, a series of measurement studies of indoor air quality were designed and 3 different elementary school buildings located in Chuncheon were selected. The levels of CO, $CO_2$, and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) including formaldehyde(HCHO), major concern of this study, were measured in absence of students after class. As the results, it is noticeable that most indoor air pollution comes from sources inside the building, which are, for example, adhesives, upholstery, manufactured wood products, art and scientific supplies. The level of CO was measured similarly to that of outdoors, which means no impact on the indoor air problems since it is lower than the code. Ventilation played an important role in the level of $CO_2$ of which difference was 1.7 times in rough and 230 % of difference in the level was detected among the 3 school buildings. This concludes that indoor air problems might be result of poor building design with inadequate location of corridors within space organization or occupant activity patterns of ventilation.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze questioning types of the Korean Elementary Mathematics Textbook in grade 3 and suggest the direction of questioning strategies for enhancing creativity in mathematics lessons. For the research, the researcher analyzed questioning types of the 3rd grade mathematics textbook and the changes of the questions compared with the questions in the previous textbooks. The author suggested the following recommendations. First, the questioning strategies of the revised mathematics textbook tends more to enhance students' creativity than the previous ones did. Second, teachers need to know the students' level of mathematics before starting their mathematics lessons because teachers can provide more effective differentiated questioning to the students. Third, students can response tuned to their level of mathematics if they meet with open-ended questions. It is desirable to develop good open-ended questions to fit students' abilities. Last, teachers should provide opportunities for students to share their own mathematical thinking. In risk-free environment, students can willingly participate at debating over mathematics proofs and refutation. Teachers should make efforts to make the classroom norm or culture free to debate among students, which leads to enhancement of students' creativity or mathematical creativity.

  • This paper compared and contrasted the views of effective mathematics instruction by 223 elementary school teachers and 151 middle school mathematics teachers using a questionnaire with 4 main domains (i.e., curriculum and content, teaching and learning, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment) and a total of 48 sub-elements. The analysis of results showed that elementary school teachers put their priority on the curriculum and content domain, while middle school counterparts did on the teaching and learning domain. The teachers commonly agreed with instruction which fosters students' self-directed learning ability, reconstructs the curriculum tailored to students' diverse levels, and establishes appropriate interaction between the teacher and students. However, elementary school teachers agreed more than middle school teachers with regard to the 23 elements related to effective mathematics instruction. In contrast, middle school teachers agreed more than their counterparts as for only 2 elements (instruction fostering mathematical representation and instruction eliciting students' learning motivation). This paper includes suggestions and implications related to Korean teachers' perception of effective mathematics instruction.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness and attitudes for leftover foods and the relationship between gender/number of family members on the effect of leftover foods-free day in elementary school students. The reasons for school lunch leftover foods were 'too much amount (38.3%)' and 'disliked menu (33.6%)', and the preferred ways for reduction of leftover food was 'to cook deliciously (34%)'. In the case of students who received nutrition education for reduction of leftover lunch, approximately 33.8% of subjects received nutrition education by administered by nutrition teachers during lunch time. The reason for reducing the amount of leftover foods was 'not to waste the foods (35.5%)'. After a leftover food-free day, approximately 62.3% of subjects responded that they ate their whole meal, except for soup. The subjects wanted 'twice per week for leftover food-free day' and had positive attitudes for that program. Proportion of practicing reduction of leftover foods in families was 55.9% of subjects, and 40.5% of subjects preferred dietary education by nutrition teachers in the classroom. For effective reduction of leftover lunch in school, nutrition teachers should attract interest on the environment and foods through after-school activities.
