The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of lateral crphalogram of skeletal class III malocclusion patients to whom orthognathic surgery was essential. For this study 37 patients with skeletal class III and going to treat or be treated orthognathic surgery(age 7-17) were selected to experimental group and 56 people with normal occlusion (age 8-13) were selected to normal group and the two groups were evaluated and statistically analyzed and the results were as follows 1. In comparison of experimental group and normal group in prepubertal group, there were significant differences in ANS-U1/Me-L1, Mx. Length/Mn. Length, S-N/Go-Me, Wits, ANB, SN-Pog, IMPA, Facial Convexity, APDI (p<0.05) 2. In comparison of experimental group and normal group in pubertal group, there were significant differences in ANS-U1/Me-L1, S-Go/N-Me, Mx.Length/Mn.Length, S-N/Go-Me, Wits, Saddle Angle, SNB, ANB, SN-Pog, IMPA, Interincisal Angle, Facial Convexity, APDI (p<0.05) 3. Among items showing characteristics of skeletal class III malocclusion, there were no significant differences between prepubertal group and pubertal group in other items except Mx. Length/Mn. Length,APDI (p<0.05) 4. The significant correlationship was the highest between Saddle Angle and SNB, SN-Pog and SNB, ANB and Facial Convexity in experimental group
Three patients who had Angle's Class II Division 1 malocclusion were treated by Bioprogressive therapy. In spite of their occlusions, the 3 patients did not have any skeletal problems. Their skeletal patterns were within normal range. So headgear or functional appliance therapy were not considered. During the treatment procedure, the most noteworthy results of Bioprogressive therapy were the effect of the Utility arch to intrude 4 mandibular anterior teeth, the effect of the Cuspid retractor in cuspid retraction and the effect of the Double delta retraction arch in the retraction of 4 anterior teeth. The whole treatment results in these cases which were achieved by Bioprogressive therapy were very favorable and the efficiency of this therapy was very excellent.
Patient with skeletal class II relationship was treated with L-ARS. L-ARS is fixed functional appliance that could be effective in children and adolescent patient who don't wear activator. The following results were obtained ; 1) Growth of Mandible was stimulated and overjet was decreased, therefore coupling of anterior teeth was established with L-ARS which is fixed functional appliance. 2) These changes were accomplished with Mandibular skeletal growth with no effect on the Maxilla. 3) L-ARS was especially effective on patient who deny to wear the removable functional appliance.
11 years 7 months old female had a reverse object of anterior teeth and class III molar relationship. Maxillary right and left canines were erupted labially and lower left lateral incisor was congenitally missed. She was treated by rapid palatal expansion and full band technique with extraction of maxillary and mandibular second molars. The following results were obtained.
1. Maxilary arch was expanded.
2. Anterior cross-bite and crowding was corrected.
3. Molar relationship was corrected.
4. Profile was somewhat improved.
With socioeconomic development and change of esthetic recognition, the demand for orthodontic treatment and number of orthodontic patients has been increasing so rapidly. And frequency of malocclusion was changed. So this study was done in an attempt to provide an epidemiologic study so that we can accomodate their orthodontic needs adequately and to obtain the reliable quantitative information regarding the characteristics of orthodontic patients who visited Department of Orthodontics, Seoul National University Hospital from 1985 to 1994. Following results were obtained. 1. The total number of orthodontic patients of SNUDH during 1990-1994 increased in comparing with that of 1985-1989. And it showed that the number of annual patients was increasing trend. 2. The total number of female patients was 1.59 times as high as that of male. It showed that the annual percentage of female patients has been increasing and that of male patients has been decreasing. So demands for orthodontic treatment of malocclusion of female patients were higher than that of male patients. 3. Each total percentage of class I, class II div.1, class II div. 2 and class III was 35.98%, 14.00%, 1.74% and 48.28%. The annual percentage of class I group had been decreasing but it has increased at 1994. However that of Class III group had been increasing until 1991 but it has been decreasing. 4. Each percentage of less than 6 year-old group, D to 8 year-old group, 8 to 12 year-old group, 12 to 18 year-old group and more than 18 year-old group was 2.65%, 8.63%, 32.50%, 27.74% and 28.48%. Annual percentage of 12 to 18 year-old group ( middle & high school students group ) had been decreasing but it has been increasing. However 18 year-old group had been increasing but it has been decreasing. So entrance examination for college and university is an important factor to distribution of age group.

For the purpose of evaluating the prevalence of malocclusion and self-esteem in adolescents, 1,380 middle-school students in the Yangsan area were surveyed by oral examination and questionnaires and the obtained results were as follows: The distribution of 1st molar occlusion by Angle's classification was 69.0, 19.4, 10.6% for Class I, II and III respectively. In the horizontal relationship, the prevalence of normal overjet and crossbite was 86.9% and 5.6% respectively whereas larger and extremely larger overjet was found in 6.6% and 0.8%. In the vertical relationship of anterior teeth, normal, deep overbite and openbite was shown in 94.1%, 4.7%, and 1.2%. For the midline discrepancy, the distribution of groups with 0~1 mm, 2~4 mm and over 5 mm was 98.2%, 1.4%, and 0.4%. Crowding only in the maxilla was found in 9.6%, while that only in the mandible and in both arches was 14.1% and 24.1% respectively. Spacing only in the maxilla was seen in 3.0%, while that only in the mandible and in both arches was 2.4% and 1.7% respectively. Significant difference in self-esteem was revealed in female and malocclusion groups of crossbite and openbite(p < 0.05).

The Twin Blocks technique was developed by Dr. William Clark of Scotland during the early 1980's. Twin Blocks are an uncomplicated system that incorporates the use of upper and lower bite blocks. These blocks reposition the mandible and redirect occlusal forces to achieve rapid correction of malocclusions. They are also comfortable and the patients wear them full-time-inducing eating time. Occlusal forces transmitted through the dentition provide a constant proprioceptive stimulus to influence the rate of growth and the trabecular structure of the supporting bone. The features of Twin Blocks mean easier and quicker treatment. The occlusal inclined plane is the fundamental functional mechanism of the natural dentition. Twin blocks are bite blocks that effectively modify the occlusal inclined plane to induce favorably directed occlusal forces by causing a functional mandibular displacement. Upper and lower bite blocks interlock at a $45^{\circ}$ angle and are designed for full-time wear to take advantage of all functional forces applied to the dentition including the forces of mastication. The patients who were treated with modified Twin Blocks, and following results were observed: 1. Large overjet and deep overbite were corrected. 2. Class II molar relationship was changed into Class I. 3. Labial inclination of upper incisors was corrected by adjustment of labial bow of upper bite block. 4. The profiles of two patients were improved by anterior displacement of mandible.
This study was investigated the changes during treatment and retention period in the Class III malocclusion patients and explored the correlationship between factors that showed relapse tendencies and pre-treatment skeletal pattern and the changes during treatment period. Numbers of total sample were 24 and their Hellman's dental age at the start of treatment was over III B and were retained at least over 1 year 6 months. The following conclusion were obtained by comparing the differences between treatment period and retention period, and after analysing the correlationship of factors that manifested relapse tendencies. 1. The angles formed by FH plane and occlusal plane, FH plane and mandibular plane, and mandibular incisor and mandibular plane changes showed rebound effect during retention period and among them occlusal plane angle and IMPA show reverse correlationship. 2. Upward displacement of the occlusal plane at the end of treatment has returning tendency, is proportional to the displacement during treatment period, but the angle between maxillary and mandibular 1st molar to its basal bone have been constantlsy maintained during the retention period. 3. Mandibular plane decrease during retention period and downward backward rotation during treatment period show correlationship.

The prosthodontic treatment of Class II division 2 malocclusions is challenging. Ideally, these malocclusions should be identified at an early age and corrected with orthodontic treatment; otherwise, the individual develops a habitual position characterized by deep overbite and significant retruded position of mandibular condyle at the TMjoint fossa. This article describes a clinical protocol for the occlusal rehabilitation of patients with Class II div.2 malocclusions. Within this protocol, an occlusal splint was used to locate the most suitable maxillary-mandibular relationship for function and range of motion. The splint increased the vertical dimension and reduced pain on TMjoints. After transfer this relationship to an articulator for fabrication of provisional restorations, the CR position and centric prematurity contact between maxilla and mandible was used to determine the tentative vertical dimension of occlusion(VDO). The amount of elevation of VDO was decided on the articulated model. The provisional restorations were accurately transfered to a patient's mouth in clinical procedures using tattoo points. The final restoration was delivered after some trial periods with provisional restorations. The theory behind this protocol and its associated clinical procedures is presented along with a discussion.
Analysis of lateral cephalometric radiograph (cephalogram) has been used routinely to evaluate skeletal and dental relationships, but analysis of the lateral facial photograph has not been used frequently for evaluation of skeletal relationships. As concerns about harm of X-ray irradiation increases, this study was planned to evaluate the possibility of substituting analysis of the lateral cephalogram with analysis of the lateral facial photograph by comparing these two analyses. According to the ANB values from cephalometric analysis, subjects were divided into three groups: Class I malocclusion group (n=32). Class II malocclusion group (n=32), and Class III malocclusion group (n=31). After measurements of angles indicating horizontal and vertical relationships of the maxilla and mandible on the lateral cephalograms and photographs, differences between Class I, II and III groups were evaluated. To evaluate the similarity between two similar values in the cephalograms and photographs, t-test using standardized variable Z and correlation analysis were performed in the Class I malocclusion group. The results showed that 1) SnN'Pg' on the photograph can be used to evaluate the antero-posterior relationship of the maxilla and mandible (ANB), 2) N'-Sn/Sn-Pg' on the photograph can be used to evaluate facial convexity (NA/APg), 3) Sn-Tra-Me' on the photograph can be used as a measurement similar to FMA. In conclusion, partly substituting lateral cephalogram analysis with lateral facial photograph analysis was possible in the evaluation of the maxilla and mandible.
