  • The EWB(electronic wedge brake) is one in which the braking force is developed in a wedge and caliper system and applied to a disk and wedge mechanism. The advantage of the wedge structure is that it produces self-reinforcing effect and hence, utilizes minimal motor power, resulting in reduced gear and current. The extent of use of clamping force sensors and protection from failure of the EWB system directly depends on the level of vehicle mass production. This study investigated the mathematical equations, simulation modeling, and failsafe control algorithm for the clamping force sensor of the EWB and validated the simulations. As this EWB system modeling can be applied to motor inductance, resistance, screw inertia, stiffness, and wedge mass and angle, this study could improve the accuracy of simulation of the EWB. The simulation results demonstrated the braking force, motor speed, and current of the EWB system when the driver desired to the step and pulse the brake force inputs. Moreover, this paper demonstrated that the proposed failsafe control algorithm accurately detects faults in the clamping force sensor, if any.

A Novel Soft-Switching Two-Switch Flyback Converter with a Wide Operating Range and Regenerative Clamping

  • A novel soft-switching two-switch flyback converter is proposed in this paper. This converter is composed of two active power switches, a flyback transformer, a blocking diode, and two passive regenerative clamping circuits. The proposed converter has the advantages of a low cost circuit configuration, a simple control scheme, a high efficiency, and a wide operating range. The circuit topology, analysis, design considerations, and experimental results of the new flyback converter are presented.

  • This paper represents an overvoltage clamping circuit for three level inverters. With a proposed overvoltage clamping circuit, the problems that high voltage stresses and voltage unbalance between outer and inner switches occurs in high power and high voltage 3-level inverters are reduced.

  • This paper presents a circuit design far clamping the overvoltages across the GTOs in three-level GTO inverters. The proposed circuit has two roles as follows; one is to minimize the power dissipation in each GTO. It can be achieved by clamping the overvoltage to half that of the DC-link voltage as exactly as possible. The other is to get blocking voltage balancing between the inner GTOs and the outer GTOs.

  • This paper presents a new conceptual electromagnetic induction eddy current based stainless steel plate spiral type heater for heat exchanger or dual packs heater in hot water system boiler steamer and super heated steamer, which is more suitable and acceptable for new generation consumer power applications. In addition, an active clamping quasi-resonant PWM high frequency inverter using trench gate IGBTs power module can operate under a principle of zero voltage soft commutation with PWM is developed and demonstrated for a high efficient induction heated hot water system and boiler in the consumer power applications. This consumer induction heater power appliance using active clamping soft switching PWM high frequency inverter is evaluated and discussed on the basis of experimental results.

  • When a threaded fastener is tightened, the torque-tension relationship is highly sensitive to two friction components: thread friction and head friction. In this study, we carried out friction experiments and analyses to determine the optimum clamping torque setting for bolt joints. First, we measured the coefficients of thread friction and head friction under the same running conditions of the bolt clamping process for lubricated and non-lubricated bolts. We also measured axial tension through bolt clamping tests using lubricated and non-lubricated bolts attached to a strain gauge. Finally, we compared the experiment and theoretical results.

  • We propose, for the first time to our knowledge, a novel gain-clamping method for EDFA in WDM Add/Drop networks by introducing a disturbance observer technique. The proposed gain-clamping control input consists of the nominal gain-clamping control such as PI(Proportional and Integral) control and the additional control input for the compensation of the effects caused by channel add/drops. The additional control input is designed using the wellknown disturbance observer technique and can be implemented very easily with general electric elements. We proved the superiority of the new technique over the previous methods by showing simulation result of minimized dips and spikes that appear in power profile of EDFA output.

Optimal Design of Electromagnetic Actuator with Divided Coil Excitation to Increase Clamping Force

  • This paper performed the optimal design of electromagnetic linear actuator with divided coil excitation. The table of orthogonal array and response surface methodology (RSM) are applied to maximize the clamping force of the electromagnetic linear actuator with colenoid (COL) and multipolar solenoid (MPS) excitation. The analysis results show that the clamping force of the optimal models with COL and MPS excitation are increased by 41% and 54% at the gap of 0mm compared to the initial models, respectively.

  • The design of composite joint is a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the failure load of the mechanically fastened composite joint with the clamping force was predicted by the failure area index method. By the suggested failure area index method, the strength of the mechanically fastened composite joint could be predicted within 22.5% when clamping force was applied to the composite joint.
