We analyzed the aquatic insects and stomach contents of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) fingerings which were collected at Namdae stream in Yangyang. A total of 6 orders, 25 family, and 52 species of aquatic insects have been found in the study area. The majority of prey eaten by chum salmon fingerlings was Diptera, which occupied 91.7% of prey items by number and 40.9% by wet weight. The food items from juvenile salmon stomachs were matched with living organisms in the river. Therefore it seemed that there was no food selectivity of juvenile chum salmon in Namdae stream. The stomach contents of masu salmon fry showed a similar pattern to the fingerlings of chum salmon. This result will provide information on the carrying capacity of Namdae stream for chum salmon.

We investigated the feeding ecology of juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during the critical early life stage prey selectivity of juvenile chum salmon during early marine migration in Korean waters at spring 2011. Salmon juveniles and zooplanktons were collected to draw with $20m{\times}5m$ gill net and $300{\mu}m$ mesh zooplankton net at each station on 11th-13th April n 2011. Collected zooplanktons were classified to 5 Phylum, 6 Class, 9 Order 17 Species in this study. Almost 76.4-100% species were classified to Phylum Arthropoda, dominant species was a species out of Hyperia galba of Order Amphipoda, Acartia spp and Paracalanus parvus of Order Calanoida. Collected salmon juveniles were grew up to average 4.7-5.4 cm fork length and average 1.0-1.5 g wet weight in whole station. Fish stomach content (mg/salmon) was heaver to 97.4, 82.4 and 63.2 mg wet weight/salmon in ST 2, 3, 4 than 20.4, 18.9 mg/salmon of ST 1, 5, because there are fish (sand eel, Hypoptychus dybowskii) and Krill (Euphausia) as prey in salmon stomach in ST 2, 3, 4. And ST 2, 3, 4 and 5 were dominated by Amphipoda as Hyperia galba, Themisto japonica and Gammarus sp., but ST 1 was dominated by copepod, because of absence of Amphipoda in the station. Therefore small Amphipoda as Hyperia galba was good prey for just released salmon juvenile in nature.
Protease inhibitor of 72.6 kDa was successively purified from chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) eggs by ion exchange, gel permeation, and affinity chromatographies. Protease inhibitor was purified with yield and purification fold of 1.50% and 58.11, respectively. SDS-PAGE results showed purified protease inhibitor consisted of two protein subunits of 54.0 and 18.6 kDa. Chum salmon inhibitor exhibited stability between 20 and $40^{\circ}C$ in weak acid environment (PH 6), and inhibited papain and cathepsin, members of cysteine protease, but not chymotrypsin. The protein inhibited cathepsin more effectively than did egg white protease inhibitor, whereas the reverse was true for papain. These results indicate chum salmon egg inhibitor is heterodimer, thus the inhibitor was classified as cysteine protease inhibitor.

The chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) is an anadromous fish distributed all around the North Pacific. Artificial production and release of the juveniles are being made by Korea, Japan, Russia, Canada and the United States. It is important to set up some criteria identifying each stock in order to clarify each nation's right of harvest for the chum salmon resource. As an attempt to build such criteria, we analyzed sequences of a microsatellite DNA Ogo5 and the COIII-ND3-ND4L region of the mitochondrial DNA from chum salmons of Korea, Japan, and the United States. Ogo5 has 4 different alleles: allele A, B-1, B-2, and B-3. Allele B-3 is found only in 3 individuals out of 12 Korea salmons. The Japan salmons have the other 3 alleles and the America salmons have only 2 allots, A and B-1. Heterozygosity index (Ho/He) distinguishes the Korea (1.61) and Japan salmons (1.63) from the America ones (1.09). Seventeen different haplotypes are found in the COIII-ND3-ND4L region from 60 individuals,20 from each stock. The gene genealogy of the haplotypes revealed by TCS program shows that the Korea and Japan salmons are genetically closely linked, but that they are clearly distinguished from the America ones. Ten and eleven individuals of the Korea and Japan salmons have an identical haplotype. Nine individuals of the Korea salmons $(45\%),$ however, are separable from the Japan salmons by their own specific nucleotides. This result presents usefulness of the COIII-ND3-ND4L region as a genetic marker for identification of the chum salmon stocks.
The morphological characteristics of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta, masou salmon. Oncorhynchus masou and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss in Korea were studied from 1989 to 1990. It was found that 13 factors of the female and 11 factors of the male in body form, number of pyloric ceaca and gill rakers has significant specific differences. There were some differences among species in the ratios of body depth, caudal peduncle depth, dorsal fin length and anal fin length to standard length (PBL), and snout length, eye diameter, upper jaw length, and cheek to head length. In the ratio of head length to fork length of the male, chum salmon showed the highest(24.7%) value and rainbow trout the lowest(21.6%). No difference was found in the female. It was proved that number of vertebrae, gill rakers, pyloric ceaca and lateral line scales were useful taxonomical characteristics of the salmon species. In particular, the ratio of eye diameter (ED) to head length (HL) appeared to be a new taxonomic criterion for the salmons in Korean waters.

This study described the characteristics of the upstream migration of salmon (Chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta) along Yeon-gok Stream in the eastern coastal region of Korea from October 24 to November 9, 2018 using radio tag and data storage tag loggers for the detection of the locations of tagged salmon and measurement of water temperature. Tracking experiments were conducted and classified into four types (case 1 to case 4) depending on the release time and the number of salmon tracked. Experiments from case 1 to case 3 were classified depending on the number of salmon tracked into cases in which a single tagged salmon was tracked (case 1), a pair of tagged salmon was tracked (case 2), and salmon were tracked by different sex ratios (case 3). Experiments from cases 1 to 3 were conducted between 10 AM and 1 PM, and case 4 was conducted after 3:30 PM. Salmon moved and spawned in the downstream region of the Yeon-gok, where water temperature is higher than in other rivers and salmon return in Canada, Russia, Japan, and the U.S.A. Most of the radio-tagged salmon swam in deep and shaded areas during the day but actively moved upstream close to sunset, regardless of the release time. Females showed relatively more active movements than males during upstream migration.
The effects of feeding frequency on growth and body composition of juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) were compared among five groups at different feeding frequencies : 4 times daily, 2 times daily, once a day, 4 times every other day, and 2 times every other day. The effects of 1~2 nonfeeding days per week were also examined. Growth rates, feed efficiencies, survival rates, and condition factors of fish fed twice and 4 times daily were higher than for the other groups, and were also higher for fish fed 6~7 days per week than those fed 5 days per week. Hepatocyte nuclei of fish were larger in the daily feeding groups than others, which suggested fish daily fed would have higher methabolic rate. Theses results suggested that captive juvenile chum salmon should be fed 2 or more times per day, and 6~7 days per week.

Leptin plays an important role in energy homeostasis and reproductive function in fish, especially in reproduction. Migrating fish, such as salmonoids, are affected by external environmental factors, and salinity changes are a particularly important influence on spawning migrations. The aim of this study was to test whether changes in salinity affect the expression of leptin, estrogen receptors (ERs), and vitellogenin (VTG) in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). The expression and activity of leptin, the expression of ERs and VTG, and the levels of estradiol-$17{\beta}$ and cortisol increased after the fish were transferred to FW, demonstrating that changes in salinity stimulate the HPG axis in migrating female chum salmon. These findings reveal details about the role of elevated leptin levels and sex steroid hormones in stimulating sexual maturation and reproduction in response to salinity changes in chum salmon.
Two viruses were isolated from kidney and spleen tissues of goldfish(Carasius auratus) and the ovarian fluid of chum salmon(Oncorhynchus keta). Both viruses replicated and produced cytopathic effect in EPC, CHSE-214, and CHH-1 cell lines at $15^{\circ}C$. The isolates were resistant to pH 3 and choloroform. Antiserum to infections pancreatic necrosis virus(IPNV) serotype VR 299 neutralized the infectivity of both of the isolates. Electron microscopy showed that the particles had typical IPNV particle morphology with average diameters of 55nm, This paper describes the first isolation of viruses infecting cultured fish in Korea.
We examined the genetic variability of Asian chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) populations using nuclear microsatellite (ms) DNA analysis with four polymorphic loci (OKM4, OKM5, OKM7, and OKM8) in 397 individuals from nine populations, including one in Korea, seven in Japan, and one in Russia. The msDNA gene diversity was highest in the Japanese populations, suggesting greater genetic variation in the populations in Japan than in populations in Korea and Russia. The pairwise $F_{ST}$ estimates based on our msDNA data showed that the Korean population was genetically different from the Japanese and Russian populations, and there were higher $F_{ST}$ estimates between Hokkaido and Honshu populations than between other population pairs. A neighbor-joining tree showed that the Korean population was distinct from two other clusters, representing the populations in Honshu and the populations in Hokkaido and Russia. These results suggest that the observed population genetic patterns of Asian chum salmon might be influenced by low or restricted gene flow.
