Switching Signal Patterns to Prevent Short Circuit of AC Choppers (교류초퍼에서 단락사고 방지를 위한 스위칭 신호 패턴)

  • Two switching signal patterns are proposed to prevent short circuit of PWM ac choppers. The voltage detection method and the current detection method are proposed to execute two switching signal patterns. In the voltage detection method, the dead-time has to be inserted to the switching signals after polarity of input voltage is checked by voltage transducer at input side. In the current detection method, the direction of load current is checked by current transducer at output side, and the dead-time delay is not considered. Controlling circuit built by current detection method is simple because the dead-time delay is considered. The experimental results are presented to prevent short circuit of ac chopper safely.

  • Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme with a dynamic compensator for the failure of the choppers, gap sensors and acceleration sensors in electromagnetic suspension system. The advantage of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulation and experimental results for the levitation characteristics when the failures of the chopper and sensors occur, respectively.

Asymmetrical PWM for Harmonics Reduction and Power Factor Improvement in PWM AC Choppers Using Bee Colony Optimization

  • This paper presents the application of bee colony optimization (BCO) to obtain the optimal switching angles for single phase PWM AC choppers. The optimal switching angles are found in the region of 0-${\pi}$ based on the asymmetrical PWM technique. This PWM process results in improvements of the total harmonic distortion of the output voltage and in the input power factor. Simulation and experimental results are compared with the conventional PWM to verify the performance of the proposed PWM process.

  • In this paper, the circuit of AC Choppers for $CO_2$ laser power supply are proposed and investigated. IGBT-controlled ac voltage regulators, operating at high frequency chopping mode. Chopping-to-supply duty ratio plays an important role in terms of laser output. Laser input energy is varied by controlling the leakage transformer used with the proposed system. This improved circuit employs a 3 electrode - type and Ring Blower. This improved circuit system has many advantages compared with the conventional SMPS such as simple design requirement, easy implementation, high reliability, low switching loss, and consequently high efficiency. As a result, the maximun output was 16W at duty-ratio of 92%, total gas mixture of $CO_2$ : $N_2$ : He = 1 : 9 : 15, total pressure of 15torr.

  • Optimal Asymmetrical Pulse-width Modulated (APWM) technique for ac chopper is proposed which can improve the input power factor and eliminate the harmonics of output voltage up to a specified order, and also enables linear control of the fundamental component of the output voltage. The PWM switching patterns at the specified phase angle are obtained by Newton-Raphson method and theoretical comparisons are made with other PWM and APWM technique.

  • A speed control system of multiple induction motors is presented in this paper. The system consists of a single CSI, several wound retor type induction motors, and the choppers which control the rotor current of motors. Some performance characteristics are studied, and the closed control loop is suggested.

  • New switching signal pattern for four switches is proposed to prevent the shortage of PWM ac choppers. In the proposed technique, four signals to four power switches are generated without current transformer, while the conventional technique requires sensing the polarity of input voltage by voltage comparator and checking the direction of input current by the current transformer. The signal circuit built by the proposed technique is simple, and reduces also the switching loss.

  • DC choppers are usually used to control the DC motor by varying the average value of DC input voltage to the DC motors. In this paper, a chopper circuit is suggested and reconstructed by replacing the free-wheeling diode with the parallel capacitor in the conventional ones. It is demonstrated that this chopper circuit with capacitor can reduce the ripples of the output voltage and current in contrast to those of the chopper with diode, and it can be controlled the output waveforms smoothly at high power demand.

  • This paper describes a step-down AC voltage regulator using an AC chopper and auxiliary transformer, which is a series connected to the main input. The detail design of the AC regulator, logic and PWM pattern of the AC chopper is described and the three-phase AC regulator using two single­phase AC choppers with a three transformer configuration is proposed for three-phase application. The proposed three-phase system has the advantages of lower system cost due to reduced switch number and gate driver circuit as well as advantages of decreased size and weight because it uses a series compensated scheme. The proposed AC regulator has many benefits such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and simple control logic. Experimental results indicate that it can be used as a step-down AC voltage regulator for power saving purposes very efficiently.

  • This paper describes a three-phase step-down AC voltage regulator using AC chopper and auxiliary transformer which is series connected with main input. It has many advantages such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and low THD. The operation principle and PWM method of the proposed regulator are described. Experimental results show that it can be used as step-down AC voltage regulator for power saving purpose very efficiently.
