  • This paper prolposes a VFM (Variable Fading Memory)Kalman filtering and applies it to the parameter estimation for time-varying signals. By adaptively calculating the fading memory, the proposed algorithm does not require any predetermined fading memory when estimating the time-varying signal parameter. Moreover, the proposed algorithm has faster convergence speed than fixed fading memory one in case the signal contains an impulsive outlier. The performance of parameter estimation for time-varying signal is evaluated by computer simulation for two cases, one of which is the chirp signal whose frequency varies linearly with time and the other is the chip signal with an impulsive outlier. The experimental results show that the VFM Kalman filtering estimates the parameter of the chirp signal more rapidly than the fixed fading memory one in the region of an outlier.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new method for detecting and estimating faults on a power line using the time-frequency domain reflectometry system. The system rests upon time-frequency signal analysis and uses a chirp signal which is multiplied by Gaussian envelope. The chirp signal is used as a reference signal, and we can get the reflected signal from a fault on a wire. To detect and estimate faults, we analyze the reflected signal by Wigner time-frequency distribution function and normalized time-frequency cross correlation function. In this paper we design an optimal reference signal for power line and implement a system for estimating fault distance on a power line with the TFDR implemented by PXI equipments. This approach is verified by some experiments with HIV 2.25mm power lines.

  • A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement algorithm using multiple chirp symbols with clock drift is proposed for accurate ranging. Improvement of the ranging performance can be achieved by using the multiple chirp symbols according to Cramer-Rao lower bound; however, distortion caused by clock drift is inevitable practically. The distortion induced by the clock drift is approximated as a linear phase term, caused by carrier frequency offset, sampling time offset, and symbol time offset. SNR of the averaged chirp symbol obtained from the proposed algorithm based on the phase derotation and the symbol averaging is enhanced. Hence, the ranging performance is improved. The mathematical analysis of the SNR enhancement agrees with the simulations.

  • The chirp spread spectrum (CSS) technique that spreads the data signal over a wider frequency band via chirp signal for transmission has attracted much attention in the field of wireless communications due to capability to resist multipath fading signals. However, there has been little mathematical analysis for the performance of CSS-based communication systems in the multipath fading environments. In this paper, we study the influence of the multipath channel on the direct modulation (DM) scheme with M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK). When a chirp signal is transmitted on the Rayleigh fading channel and affected by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), we derive the theoretical performance. From numerical results, it is confirmed that the analytic symbol error rate (SER) agrees closely with the empirical SER.

  • In this paper, the theoretical background and the specific implementation method of a compressive receiver for RFID signal detection as well as the design method of DDL(Dispersive Delay Line) and chirp LO are described. DDL, which is one of the main components of the compressive receiver, is designed to have $13{\mu}s$ dispersive delay time and 6 MHz bandwidth using the SAW technique based on $LiNbO_3$ material. The chirp LO is designed using DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer). Also the compressive receiver is fabricated to be installed into the RFID reader. Test results show the maximum frequency error of 25 kHz for single signal input, the receiver sensitivity of -44 dBm, and the maximum frequency error is 75 kHz for 6 multi-tone input signals. These results indicate that the fabricated compressive receiver is working well even in dense RFID operating environments.

  • In order to improve the transmission performance of a chirp signal-based chirp spread spectrum system, the cross-correlation coefficient (CCC) should be carefully considered. In this paper, we derive the CCC for analyzing the transmission performance and propose the optimal chirp rate based on the analysis. The simulation results verify the mathematical derivations and show that the considered scheme can improve the performance by considering the CCC.

  • In this paper, we implement a 40kbps narrowband powerline communication modem which is able to high transfer rate than conventional powerline communication technology by using the chirp technique that is one of the spread spectrum techniques. A modem that implement in this paper used the CEBus standard and a symbol that the linear variable frequency signal of 100$\sim$380kHz is kept for 25us. Experimental results, we verified the possibility that communication technology with the Chirp technique can make transfer rate more than 40kbps at narrowband communication.

  • For successful guided-wave damage inspection, the appropriate signal processing of measured wave signals is very important. The objective of this paper is to introduce an efficient signal processing technique especially suitable for the guided-waves used for damage detection. The key idea of this technique is to model guided-waves by chirp functions of special form considering the dispersion phenomenon. To determine the parameter of the chirp functions simulating guided-waves, the matching pursuit algorithm is employed. The damage information in waveguides can be extracted by pulse-characterizing parameters. The effectiveness of present method is checked with the guided wave-based damage inspection.

  • The performance of conventional direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems is decreased under environments such as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), channel distortion and interference noise due to multiple access user. By means of this parameter, auto correlation value of pseudo noise spreading sequence is decreased at receiver. This techniques which are based on correlation of between signature waveform signal. In this paper, to improve correlation property, we proposed the binary chirp DS-CDMA techniques which combine the DS-CDMA and chirp modulation. The proposed system which is based on binary chirp symbol has a good correlation value. Thus, we called BC DS-CDMA. To evaluate the system's performance, we compare the performance of the proposed systems with DS-CDMA systems under AWGN channel and halogen noise which exists on the powerline. The simulation results show that the proposed method has better performance than conventional technique.
