In the views of medical sociology, it shows very interesting phenomenon that the modernization of traditional area follows the western model of modernization. Moreover, it provides a good chance to discuss whether modernization and westernization of tradition is real development or not. Traditional Chinese Medicine had been the only institutional medicine in China for a long time. But the status of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been changed very rapidly since modern era. Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medical School was established in 1916. But National Party government tried to abolish Traditional Chinese Medicine and it met a crisis of maintenance. But the situation has been dramatically changed when Communist Party got the power in 1949. The Communist Government needed a chief medical service. And Traditional Chinese Medicine could meet the condition. Traditional Chinese Medicine could provide also the ideology of national superiority. Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine has been protected and developed by the assistance of the Communist Party. In the process, Traditional Chinese Medical education has been professionalized.

  • The origin of "Fire" in Traditional Chinese Medicine is summed up based on observation and knowledge of natural fire, followed by abstract thinking, of which the outcomes are best symbolized in the character Fire[火]. Because it is an abstract concept, it is hard to give a single and strict definition. Naturally, it would be necessary to analyze and illustrate the origin of 'Fire' from different angles such as broad definition, multi-definition, levels, classifications and effects. The concept of 'Fire' has four meanings in the aspect of the broad definition: first, natural fire; second, the physiological conception of fire; third, the medical conception of fire; fourth, general concept related to fire. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fire mainly indicates physiologic fire, pathological fire, the fire in the six kinds of natural climate and the fire as one of the properties and the flavors of herbs.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to review the research trends in treatment for acute alcohol intoxication in traditional Chinese medicine. Methods : 19 studies were selected by searching CNKI(China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 2006 to 2011, and we performed a systemic review of them. Results : All studies are controlled clinical trials using pharmacopuncture therapy. Each experimental group was given various kinds of pharmacopuncture therapy, whereas each control group was given another western medicine or treatment. Emergent treatment was used in both groups. The results of 15 studies showed that pharmacopuncture therapy has an effect on the treatment of acute alcohol intoxication. However the quality of these clinical trials wasn't high. Conclusions : It seems that the researches for acute alcohol intoxication have been performed actively in traditional Chinese medicine. We hope that our study can activate clinical research for this disorder in Korean traditional medicine.

  • Objectives : One of the fundamental premises of medical anthropology is the interconnectedness of medicine and society. Recent ethnographies of medicine demonstrate that the interconnectedness of the social and the medical not just evokes relatedness of the two parties, but also emphasizes the agency of the constituents, mutually shaping and being shaped. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to anthropologically investigate Korean medicine in South Korea and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China. Methods : The findings are based on anthropological studies of East Asian medicine employing long-term fieldwork about Korean Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Results : TCM is characterized by standardization, hospitalization, and scientization, by which simplification, collectivization, and biomedicalization prevail in contemporary traditional medicine in China. In contrast, Korean medicine is characterized by diversity, care delivery by individual private clinics, and a considerable distance from biomedicine. To understand the divergence of the two East Asian medicines, one should consider the social contexts intervening into the medical contents, such as the role of the state and dominant discourses in given historical periods. Conclusions : Korean medicine in South Korea and TCM in China demonstrate well the hybridity of the social and the medical, suggesting that, for more comprehensive understanding of the medical, the social should be paid attention to.

Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCT) which used TCM as a treatment for pompholyx were searched in China National Infrastructure (CNKI) platform. The risk of bias of studies was assessed by using Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) 2.0 tool. Results The selected 10 RCTs showed that the experimental group treated with either TCM alone or with a combination of TCM and Western medicine showed more significant therapeutic effect compared to the control group which Western medicine alone. Conclusions Based on the studies from China, TCM may be an effective treatment for pompholyx. This provides evidence for Korean medicine use, and its possible effectiveness in treating pompholyx
