Chinensis galla has been used as an multi-functional herb, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-virus, and antitumor agent. This study was performed to antimicrobial and cytotoxicity effect in vitro. The results were summarized as follows : Chinensis galla was antimicrobial effect on Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis. Chinensis galla was antimicrobial effect on Kocuria rhizophila, Corynebacterium ammoniagenes. The extracts of Chinensis galla exhibited cytotoxicity on human dermal fibroblast at $10\;{\mu}{\ell}$ but not at $5\;{\mu}{\ell}$, and the same results was known under a microscope. Accordingly the results show Chinensis galla could antimicrobial effect but exhibited cytotoxicity on human dermal fibroblast at high concentration and it needs more research.

Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is one of the most important bacteria in the formation of dental plaque and dental caries. S. mutans adheres to an acquired pellicle formed on the tooth surface, and aggregates with many oral bacteria, and initiates plaque formation by synthesizing glucan from sucrose, which is catalyzed by glucosyltransferases. S. mutans metabolizes the dietary sugar to the organic acids. The organic acids demineralize tooth surface and result in dental caries. Galla Chinensis have been traditionally used for stopping bleeding of gingiva, removing edema and halitosis, drainage, fixing the teeth and as an antiphlogistic agent. In previous reports, antibacterial effects of Galla Chinensis have been investigated whereas anti-cariogenic effects is still not examined enough. Therefore we tested effects of ethanol extracts of Galla Chinensis on the cariogenic properties such as the growth, acid production, adhesion, and insoluble glucan synthesis of S. mutans. In the result, ethanol extracts of Galla Chinensis showed the inhibition of S. mutans growth and organic acids production over 0.031 mg/ml concentrations. The adhesion of S. mutans to Saliva-coated Hydroxyapatite beads S-HAs has decreased with the increase of concentration of ethanol extracts of Galla Chinensis. And it seems to have adhesion inhibitory effect in concentration of over 0.25 mg/ml. It gives us the result that Galla Chinensis have anti-caries effects. But ethanol extract of Galla Chinensis didn't have inhibitory effect on insoluble glucan synthesis. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of the ethanol extract of Galla Chinensis showed strong phenolic compounds, medium steroids & terpenoids and glycosides, and weak organic acids and peptides. These results suggest that the ethanol extracts of Galla Chinensis may have anti-cariogenic properties, which may be able to be related with strong phenolic compounds.

Objective : This clinical research was conducted to test patients with dark circles by external application with Chinensis galla, Lithospermi radix and Salviae miltiorrhizae radix in cosmetics. Methods : We gave prototype cosmetics to 27 patients who volunteered for this clinical research in Kyungwon university from October 14th, 2009 to November 11th. Left inferior palpebra area of patients was treated with Chinensis galla, Lithospermi radix and Salviae miltiorrhizae radix in cosmetics(Experimental group) and right inferior palpebra area of patients was treated with placebo(Control group) for 4weeks. We observed change of darkness of inferior palpebra and subjective satisfaction. Also taking digital image and color meter were used to evaluate the effects of Chinensis galla, Lithospermi radix and Salviae miltiorrhizae radix in cosmetics. Results : Overall evaluation was slightly positive. It is more effective on Right inferior palpebra than on Left inferior palpebra to improve darkness of inferior palpabra in this clinical research. Conclusion : We can guess that cosmetics with Chinensis galla, Lithospermi radix and Salviae miltiorrhizae radix has some therapeutical effects in reducing the symptoms of dark circles.

Galla Rhois is a nest of parasitic bug, Mellaphis chinensis Bell, in Rhus chinensis Mill. Galla Rhois has been used for the therapy of diarrhea, peptic ulcer, hemauria, etc., that showed various antiinflammatory activity, and other biological properties. We studied the effect of Galla Rhois water extract(GRWE). The cytotoxic activity of GRWE in HL-60 cells was increased in a concentration-dependent manner. GRWE was cytotoxic to HL-60 cells, with $IC_50$ of $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Treatment of GRWE to HL-60 cells showed the fragmentation of DNA in a concentration manner, suggesting that these cells underwent apoptosis. In addition, the flow cytometric analysis revealed GRWE concentration-dependently increased apoptotic cells with hypodiploid DNA content and arrested G1 phase of cell cycle. These results indicate that GRWE may have a possibility of potential anticancer activities. Treatment of HL-60 cells with GRWE was induced activation of caspase-3, caspase-8 and proteolytic cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase. Also, caspase-3 was directly activated via caspase-8 activation. GRWE also caused the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol. GRWE-induced cytochrome c release was mediated by caspase-8-dependent cleavage of Bid and Bax translocation. These results suggest that caspase-8 mediates caspase-3 activation and cytochrome c release during GRWE-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the origin of Meretrix. Method : Bibliographies about Meretrix were examined focusing on the origin. Based on this analysis, the list and characteristics of the origin-mineral were presented. Results : Based on the Meretrix, the Korean and foreign literature were investigated to make a list, and the process of changing the origin was organized in chronological order. Based on these results, the shape of the currently cultivated or distributed drugs, the status of the distributed drugs and the status of the distributed products were summarized. In addition, the results of summarizing the adverse effects and sensitivities of the efficacy and prestige are as follows: 1. The origin of the Meretrix corresponded to the fall of the mollusks Merethrix metrix L. and Cyclina sinensis Gmelin, which are mollusks belonging to the reference family Veneridae. Their Herbal name is CONCHA CYCLINAE SEU MERETRICIS and they have therapeutic effects on cough, asthma, thirsty and chest heavies. 2. Munhap (文蛤) is a different name of GALLA CHINENSIS. It has therapeutic effects on various skin diseases. Conclusions : The Meretrix means two herbs. The first one is CONCHA CYCLINAE SEU MERETRICIS, the other is GALLA CHINENSIS. They should be used separately according to their clinical use.
According to the literatual study on the external treatment of premature ejaculation, the results were as follows. 1. Much utilization agent are ASARI HERBA CUM RADICE(細辛), CHINENSIS GALLA(五倍子), OSTREAE CONCHA(牡蠣), CNIDII FRUCTUS(蛇床子), GRANATI PERICARPIUM(石榴皮), CARYOPHYLLI FLOS(丁香), CHEBULAE FRUCTUS(訶子), FOSSILIA OSSIS MASTODI(龍骨), VESPAE NIDUS(露蜂房), PAPAVERIS FRUCTUS(罌粟殼) etc. They are occupied in adstringentia, juventia, divergence agent, liver stabilizer agent.
Objective: The case study assessed the possibility of improving symptoms by external treatment in a patient complaining of night sweats who could not take oral herbal medicine. Methods: Chinensis galla, Ostreae concha, and Cinnabaris were mixed in a 2:1:1 ratio and applied to CV8 before the patient went to bed. The treatment was removed upon waking and repeated every night. If itchiness and skin redness occurred, the position was changed to 2-3 cm up or down from the navel or application was changed to once every two days. Results: The external treatment eliminated the symptoms of sweating in the arms, legs, chest, and abdomen and reduced sweating in the occipital and neck areas. The sweating was improved to the extent that it no longer interfered with daily life. Conclusions: This case study shows the possibility of using external treatments rather than herbal medicine to treat night sweats.
Antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of about 60 endemic Korean herbs and medicinal plants were investigated. When compared to the group treated with phenoxyethanol as a positive control, the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was inhibited by Styrax japonica, Stevia rebaudiana, Morus Leaf, Coptis chinensis and Slavia miltorrhiza Bunge, the latter showing the strongest inhibition (97%). The growth of Staphylococcus aureus was inhibited by Acorus calamus, Pinus densiflora, Ginkgo biloba, Dryopteris crassirhizoma, Chrysanthemum zawadskii, Slavia miltorrhiza Bunge and Coptis chinensis, the latter showing the strongest inhibition (99%). The growth of yeast type fungi Candida albicans was inhibited to about 35% by Scutellaria baicalensis Geogr and about 33% by Coptis chinensis as determined by paper disk method. The growth of bacterium Malassezia furfur was inhibited by Paeonia lactiflora, Rosa multiflora, Coptis chinensis, Citrus aurantium L. subsp, Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews, and Galla rhois, the latter showing the strongest inhibition (57%). The growth of Propionibacterium acnes was inhibited by Galla rhois, Paeonia lactiflora, Morus bombycis, Cucumis sativus, Stevia rebaudiana, Coptis chinensis and Slavia miltorrhiza Bunge. Interestingly, Coptis chinensis and Slavia miltorrhiza Bunge showed the strongest inhibition (99%) similar to that in postive control. The possible components and their action modes were suggested and discussed.

Paraquat is a nonselective contact herbicide that may induced damage to many organs poisoned with it. But there is no effective treatment modality. This report is about one case of treatment for paraquat poisoning. The patient was hospitalized of Wonkwang university Gwangju Oriental Medical Hospital at the department of Internal Medicine. For 26 days of hospitalization period, the authors supplied gamdutanggami(甘豆湯加味), which consists of Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), Semen Glycine(黑豆), burned powder of Rhizoma rhei(大黃沙炭末), Succus phyllostachyos(竹瀝) and chinese ink(墨汁), decoction of Galla chinensis(五倍子) and Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), and fluid. And then he showed improvement of condition and returned to a daily life. This report has a limitation for proof of oriental medicine remedial value. Because this is the only one case of a small quantity of paraquat poisoning patient less than 20cc. Actually there are a few paper regarding the Oriental medicine remedial value in paraquat poisoning patient, so we hope luther study and report ensue.
