This study was undertaken to investigate the difference of chin morphology and mandibular form in relation to different mandibular growth direction. The subject was divided into three group i.e., control group, vertical group, and horizontal group, according to the criteria of $Bj{\ddot{o}}rk$ sum, and each group was composed of 15 females and 15 males. Medial axis analysis in addition to the routine cephalometric analysis using P.I.A.S. (personal image analysing system) was carried out to find out the differences of mandibular morphology on each group. The results were as follows: 1. The area of symphysis was larger in horizontal growth group than that of vertical growth group. 2. Protruding chin area was also larger in horizontal growth group than that of vertical growth group. 3. There was a close correlationship between protruding chin area and other form of mandible. 4. Antegonial notch depth and ramus posterior contour depth was deeper in vertical growth group than in horizontal growth group, and antegonial notch depth was more influenced by anterior part of notch than posterior part of notch. 5. Mental medial axis and incisal medial axis length, in relation to corpus medial axis length was larger in vertical growth group than in horizontal growth group.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between chin deviation and the positional and morphological features of the mandible and to determine the factors that contributed to chin deviation in individuals with a unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 28 adults with UCLP were analyzed in this study. Segmented three-dimensional temporomandibular fossa and mandible images were reconstructed, and angular, linear, and volumetric parameters were measured. Results: For all 28 individuals, the chin was found to deviate to the cleft side by 1.59 mm. Moreover, among these 28 individuals, only 7 showed distinct (more than 4 mm) chin deviation, which was toward the cleft side. Compared to the non-cleft side, the mandibular body length, frontal ramal inclination, and vertical position of the condyle were lower and inclination of the temporomandibular fossa was steeper on the cleft side. Furthermore, the differences in inclination of the temporomandibular fossa, mandibular body length, ramus length, and condylar volume ratio (non-deviated/deviated) were positively correlated with chin deviation. Conclusions: UCLP individuals show mild chin deviation to the cleft side. Statistical differences were noted in the parameters that represented positional and morphological asymmetries of the mandible and temporomandibular fossa; however, these differences were too small to indicate clinical significance.
Although it is well known that the chincup, used to correct a skeletal class III malocclusion in growing children, reduce the mandibular prognathism by arresting the growth of the mandibular length and rotating the mandible posteroinferiorly, the majority of the studies about chincup is focused on condylar head that plays an Important role in mandibular growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphologic change of the mandibular symphysis where extraoral force is applied directly during chincup treatment. The data lot this study were obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs of 62 growing children(chincup group:32, control group:30) with mixed dentition who had been accepted lot the orthodontic treatment at Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital. The results were as follows : 1. Symphysis height was increased both in chincup therapy group and control group during treatment. Symphysis depth was decreased or maintained the initial values in chin cup therapy group, whereas increased in control group. Posterior symphysis depth was decreased both in chin cup therapy group and control group, but anterior svmphysis detph was increased in control group, whereas decreased in chincup therapy group. 2. Chin depth and chin curvature were increased in control group, whereas maintained or decreased in chincup therapy group during treatment. Chin angle, menton ang1e and symphysis angle were decreased in control group, whereas increased in chincup therapy group. It suggested that bone deposition in pogonion area that occur normally with mandibular growth was supressed by direct contact of chincup. 3. When growing children wear chincup, symphysis morphology was maintained due to inhibition of forward growth at mandibular symphysis. It may be due to the suppression of bone deposition in anterior part of symphysis.
By studying the relationship between the morphology of mandibular symphysis and craniofacial morphology in classIII malocclusion, this study aims at deciding whether the morphogy of mandibular symphysis can be used as a predictor on the growth of mandible. The materials used for this study were the cephalometric radiographs of male class III malocclusion. The subjected age groups were 10-12(G1 group) and 20 and above(G2 group): 50 were selected from each group. Each group was again divided, according to the ratio of symphysis, into Large(L), Average(A), and Small(S). The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. In average the ratio of symphysis, G2 group showed significantly bigger than G1 group(p<0.05) 2. In both G1 and G2 groups, the ratio of symphysis had no relationship with the measurements on the cranial base and the maxilla(p>0.05). 3. In both G1 and G2 groups, there was not distinct difference in the antero-posterior positions among L, A, S subgroups. 4. L and A subgroups showed significantly larger than S subgroup in lower gonial angle and chin angle in G1 group (p<0.05). 5. In the measurements on the vortical relation of the face, anterior total face height(ATFH) and anterior lower face height(ALFH) of L subgroup were significantly larger than that of S subgroup in G1 group(p<0.05) and also mandible showed a tendency to grow downward vertically. 6. In the measurements on the tooth position and inclination, L subgroup showed as compared with S subgroup a tendency of extrusion of maxillary and mandibular teeth in G1 group, but G2 group showed such tendency only in mandibular teeth. 7. In the measurements on the abnormal growth prediction by Schulhof, in G1, there was no significant difference among L, A, S sugroups. 8. In the correlative analysis of the ratio of symphysis and other measurements, G1 group showed significant correlationships in chin angle, PP/MP angie, ANS-Me and other, while G2 group showed the same only in MP-LIT and MP-LMMC(p<0.05, p<0.01). In summarizing the above, in the G1 group, consisting of young males, no difference was noted in horizontal relation between L and S subgroups; in vertical relation, L subgroup showed a stronger tendency of downward growth of mandible than S subgroup. In adult male G2 group, however, no distinct morphological difference of craniofacial complex by the ratio of symphysis.
Objectives: Facial diagnosis is an important part of clinical diagnosis in traditional East Asian Medicine. In this paper, using a fully automated facial shape analysis system, we show that facial morphological features are associated with cold pattern. Methods: The facial morphological features calculated from 68 facial landmarks included the angles, areas, and distances between the landmark points of each part of the face. Cold pattern severity was determined using a questionnaire and the cold pattern scores (CPS) were used for analysis. The association between facial features and CPS was calculated using Pearson's correlation coefficient and partial correlation coefficients. Results: The upper chin width and the lower chin width were negatively associated with CPS. The distance from the center point to the middle jaw and the distance from the center point to the lower jaw were negatively associated with CPS. The angle of the face outline near the ear and the angle of the chin line were positively associated with CPS. The area of the upper part of the face and the area of the face except the sensory organs were negatively associated with CPS. The number of facial morphological features that exhibited a statistically significant correlation with CPS was 37 (unadjusted). Conclusions: In this study of a Korean population, subjects with a high CPS had a more pointed chin, longer face, more angular jaw, higher eyes, and more upward corners of the mouth, and their facial sensory organs were relatively widespread.
Morphology and histochemical characteristics of the alimentary tract in surfperch, Ditrema temmincki were investigated by histological observation. The relative length of gut(RLG) in surfperch, that is the postpharyngeal portion of the alimentary tract, is about 0.89 to standard length. The absence of a stomach, which is the part of expantion of the alimentary tract between esophageal end and the entrance of the bile duct into the intestine, was observed. The alimentary tract is divided into the esophagus, esophageal-intestine part, anterior intestine, mid intestine, posterior intestine, intestinorectum part, rectum, rectal-anus part, and anus by morphology and histochemical features. Morphology of mucosal folds is the most complexity in the rectum and the tunica muscularis of the esophagus and anus is more advanced than those of other parts. The epithelial layers of mucosal folds consist of columnar epithelium except for cuboidal cells of the anterior part of the esophagus. The goblet cells and polysaccharide absorptive cells were observed in the alimentary tract. Nutritive polysaccharide is mainly absorbed by the absorptive cells in the posterior intestine of the surfperch.

Purpose: To assess the relationship between soft tissue reference line and hard tissue reference line using the standardized photographs and the posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs(P-A)in facial asymmetric patients and to compare the differences of angular measurement between normal group and asymmetry group. Methods: Normal group consisted of 44 persons with normal occlusion and normal facial morphology. Asymmetry group consisted of 90 patients with facial asymmetry. Standardized facial photographs and P-A were taken in all subjects. The horizontal reference lines were bipupillary line in photographs and latero-orbitale line in P-A respectively. The vertical reference line were the line from the midpoint of horizontal reference line perpendicularly. Angular measurement of otobasion canting, lip canting, nose deviation, chin deviation, and maxillary deviation were compared and analyzed in photographs. And angular measurement of mastoid canting, mandibular canting, nose deviation, chin deviation, and maxillary deviation were compared and analyzed in P-A. Results: 1. The variables of photographs and P-A were significantly related in the asymmetry group. 2. Significant differences between all variables except for PT2 and PA2 were shown in the asymmetry group and between PT1 and PA1, PT3 and PA3 in the normal group respectively. 3. Comparison measurement scores of angular difference between control group and experimental group concerning each variable showed significant difference except for PA1. Conclusions: Soft tissue components may not compensate for underlying skeletal imbalance in nose deviation and chin deviation. The horizontal reference lines in photographs were significant related with the P-A, but angular variables between the two studies show significant differences. Therefore, we do not recommend use photography in the assessment the facial asymmetry as complemented in the P-A.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in soft tissue chin thickness and to investigate correlations between hard and soft tissues measurements after orthodontic treatment conducted by premolars extraction and incisor retraction. The sample consisted of 35 female adults with Angle classification class I or class II division 1 malocclusion. Using lateral cephalometric radiographs taken before and after treatment, hard and soft tissue structures were measured and reproducible six landmark on soft chin tissue were used to locate the various points of soft tissue contour of the chin. The res에ts were as follows : 1. There were signigicant correlations between pretreatment B-B', Pm-Pm' and pretreatment vortical skeletal measurements such as $MP{\perp}HP,\;MP{\perp}PP$, ALFH and between a-a', b-b', Me-Me' and measurements of sym-physeal morphology such as SL, SW, PL. 2. There were significant decreases at B-B', Pm-Pm' and significant increases at a-a', b-b' between pre-and posttreatment mea surements. 3. There were significant correlations among soft tissues changes and hard tissue changes except for changes at B-B' and the range of correlation coefficient was about 0.3-0.4. 4. There were significant differences at ${\Delta}UI-VP,\;LI{\perp}, and B-B' measurements between subgroups divided by posttreatment Pog-Pog' changes. 5. There were significant differences at ${\Delta}overbite,\;NPog{\perp}HP,\;and\;Me-Me'$ measurements between subgroups divided by posttreatment Me-Me' changes.
