  • This study examined the effects of family climate, peer support and self-esteem on children's self-regulation. The participants in this study were 369 children (M=11.78 year) who completed questionnaires regarding family climate, peer support, self-esteem and self-regulation. Data were analyzed means by of a Structural equation model using AMOS 7.0. Our results indicated that (1) family climate, peer support and self-esteem were directly linked with children's self-regulation (2) the associations between family climate or peer support and children's self-regulation were mediated by children's self-esteem. These results imply that family climate and peer support are important antecedent variables in predicting children's self-regulation as well as their relative levels of self-esteem.

Major findings were that maternal child rearing behaviors and stress related to parents and home environments influenced children's self esteem only in the NWG; school-related stress was an influential variable on children's self esteem in both the NWG and OG. Peer victimization influenced children's self-esteem in both NWG and OG. Self-perceived obesity influenced some domains of children's self-esteem, especially in girls.

The subjects were 300 elementary school children selected from two elementary schools in Incheon area. The instruments included the father's child rearing behavior index, father's child rearing involvement index, children's self-esteem inventory, and children's school adjustment inventory. The statistics used from this data were correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that father's child rearing behaviors of autonomy, achievement, concern and affection behavior were positively correlated to children's general, social, family and school self-esteem. Correlation analysis also indicated that a father's child rearing involvement, that is family activities, day to day guidance, household affairs and home education involvement were positively correlated to children's general, social and family self-esteem, and school self-esteem was positively correlated to family activities and day to day guidance involvement. Father's child rearing behaviors also indicated positive correlations with children's teachers, friends, studies and rule adjustments. A father's child rearing involvement also indicated positive correlations with all of the schools adjustment variables. The relationships between children's self-esteem and school adjustment indicated positive high correlations in all sub-variables. It was also found that autonomy behavior, family activities involvement, affection behavior and concern behavior were significant predictors of children's self-esteem. Also, day to day guidance involvement and family activities involvement were significant predictors of children's school adjustment, but in addition to children's self-esteem variables, children's social, school, general, and family self-esteem were significant predictors of children's school adjustment.

The participants were composed of 320 elementary school 5th graders (161 boys and 159 girls) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on mothers' parenting, children's self-esteem, and stress. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that maternal warmth was negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. Children's self-esteem was also negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. in addition maternal warmth was positively correlated with self-esteem in both boys and girls. It was futher found that self-esteem tended to play a partially mediating role between maternal warmth and children's stress only in boys. Self-esteem tended to play a perfectly mediating role between maternal permissiveness/nonintervention and children's stress only in girls. These results indicated that children's self-esteem plays a crucial role in improving the levels of children's stress.

The participants from each family consisted of the fathers, mothers, and school-age children of 179 households. The results of this study reveal the following: (1) First, the multicultural children scored higher than the average in self-esteem in most areas except school life. Furthermore, the children and parents had a comparatively positive attitude toward acculturation (2) Second, the children's level of self-esteem had significant correlations only with the acculturation of mothers as opposed to fathers. (3) Third, the impacts of acculturation of the children and their parents on the children's self-esteem followed different patterns according to the sub-areas of self-esteem. Specifically, the self-esteem for overall self-value and family relations rose when the multicultural acceptance attitude of mothers was high. However, area of peer relations was affected only by the acculturation of children. The area concerning school life was high when the mother-culture propagation attitude of mothers was low.

  • This study investigated the relationships between the husband's support, depression, parenting self-efficacy, and parenting behavior of Korean American mothers and their children's self-esteem. The participants were 113 Korean American child-mother dyads (grades 3-8) from Southern California, USA. The data, including the mothers' parenting behavior as assessed by their children, were collected from self-report questionnaires. A path analysis indicated that the effects of the above mentioned variables on the children's self-esteem depended on the subscale model of the parenting behavior. In every subscale model of parenting behavior, the husband's support was positively related to the parenting self-efficacy and the mother's depression was negatively related to the parenting self-efficacy. Further, in the warmth-acceptance model, the husband's support was positively related to the parenting behavior, the mother's depression was negatively related to the parenting behavior, parenting self-efficacy was positively related to both the parenting behavior and the children's self-esteem, and the parenting behavior was positively related to the children's self-esteem. In the rejection-restriction model, the husband's support was negatively related to the parenting behavior, the mother's depression was positively related to the parenting behavior, the parenting self-efficacy was negatively related to the parenting behavior and was positively related to the children's self-esteem, and the parenting behavior was negatively related to the children's self-esteem. In the permissiveness-nonintervention model, the parenting behavior was negatively related to the children's self-esteem. These results, particularly the dependence on the subscale model of parenting behavior, will be helpful in understanding the effects of parenting on Korean American children's self-esteem.

Second, the nurturing attitude of parents felt by the target children of GATE is, from both father and mother, more affectionate, autonomous, achievement-oriented and rational. The parents of target children of GATE are more free in communication and fathers are aggressively in education; compared to parents of nongifted children, they put more importance on the course of achievement and help their children's achievement with actual way compared to the parents of nongifted children. Third, the relevance between self-esteem and parents' nurturing attitude is different in sub-areas. The self-esteem at home is the most relevant with parents' nurturing attitude, and the self-esteem at school is more affected by other factors than by the parents' nurturing attitude.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of parental self-esteem on late school-aged children's media device addiction by mediating marital conflict and children's self-esteem. Methods: This study used data from the 11th (2018) Panel Study on Korean Children. The participants consisted of 1,082 family triads (fathers, mothers, and children). Data were collected using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Marital Conflict Scale, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS/WIN 27.0 and Mplus 8.7. Results: The final model showed a good fit for the data. Children's media device addiction was directly related to mothers' self-esteem, mothers' marital conflict, and children's self-esteem. Fathers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating both fathers' and mothers' marital conflict. In addition, mothers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating mothers' marital conflict. Conclusion: The findings indicates that self-esteem and marital conflict for both fathers and mothers have a significant effect on children's media device addiction. It suggests that more attention might be given to fathers and mothers in developing interventions to prevent children's media device addiction.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine: (1) the relationships among two dimensions of children's perfectionism (both self-oriented and socially prescribed), and levels of depression, anxiety, and self-esteem; (2) whether or not self-esteem mediates the relationship between children's self-oriented perfectionism, and depression and anxiety; and (3) whether self-esteem mediates the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism, and depression and anxiety. The participants were 406 fifth and sixth graders. Their data were collected with questionnaires. It was found that there are significant correlations between children's self-oriented perfectionism, and depression and self-esteem, and there are also significant correlations between children's socially prescribed perfectionism, and depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. It was also found that self-esteem mediates the relationship between the two dimensions of children's perfectionism, and depression and anxiety. These results seem to indicate that enhancing healthy self-esteem could lower the risks of experiencing depression and anxiety in children with perfectionistic personality.
