저소득.일반가정 유아의 학습관련 기술과 초기학습능력: 어머니 교육참여의 조절효과를 중심으로 (Learning-related Skills and Academic Abilities of Young Children: The Moderating Effects of Their Mothers' Involvement)

  • This study investigated the effects of young children's learning-related skills and the maternal involvement on academic abilities. The sample consisted of 310 children from 7 child-care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. All variables were measured by the teachers and the mothers of surveyed children. The instrument included the Korean Child Development Inventory(K-CDI) for 4 to 6-year olds and Preschool Learning Behavior Scale(McDermott et al 2000) and the questionnaire on mother's involvement about their children's education. The collected data was analyzed by t-test and hierarchical regression using the SPSS Program. The findings are as follows. First, regardless of the family income level, verbal comprehension and numerical abilities were positively associated with their learning-related skills of young children. Second, the interaction effect of learning-related skills and the mothers' involvement on verbal comprehension of young children in the low-income families was observed. However, no interaction effect was seen in terms of learning-related skills and the maternal involvement on verbal comprehension and numerical abilities of young children in the high-income families. These findings highlight the importance of learning-related skills and their mothers' involvement during the preschool period for the low-income family in improving the early academic achievement.

초.중.고등학생의 아침결식 관련 변인: 2001년 국민건강.영양조사 자료 분석 (Factors Associated with Skipping Breakfast in Korean Children: Analysis of Data from the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with skipping breakfast of Korean children by analyzing the 24-hour recall intake data from the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey. The sample of this study consisted of 1,600 children aged 7 to 18 years. About 17% of the children skipped breakfast, consuming no food or beverage at all. About 30% of children reporting breakfast skipping in a self-administered survey were shown to have eaten some foods as a result of analysis of the 24-hour recall data. Students having eaten breakfast consumed 21% of Estimated Energy Requirement at breakfast. The multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that age was associated with skipping breakfast both in elementary and middle/high school students; older students were more likely to skip breakfast. Elementary school students from low-income families were more likely to skip breakfast than those from upper-high income families. Intervention programs are needed to prevent children from skipping breakfast by targeting older students. For elementary school students, such programs should be first developed for those from low-income families.

  • Path analysis was used to determine variables influencing the self-esteem of 222 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children in law-income families. The children and their mothers responded to questionnaires on self-esteem, child psychological traits, mother psychological characteristics, economic hardship, and child rearing practices. Mothers' warmth-acceptance child rearing behavior was facilitating of children's self-esteem. However, mothers' economic stress had an indirect impact via their depression on decrease in the warmth-acceptance variable. Permissive-nonintervention child rearing behavior decreased the level of children's self-esteem. However, mothers' depression and marital confilct(??) deriving from economic stress increased both rejection-restriction and permissive-nonintervention styles of child rearing. Mothers who experienced much stress due to economic hardship influnced(??) children's perception of their family's poverty and thereby lowered their children's self-esteem.

가정문해환경과 유아의 어휘 및 읽기 능력 (The Effects of Home Literacy Environments on Preschoolers' Vocabulary and Reading Skills)

  • We examined the effects of family and home literacy environments on the vocabulary and reading abilities of 3 to 5-year-olds. In particular, SES was considered against home literacy environment. The sample consisted of 366 Korean children and their mothers. We found that the level of mother's education was related to the child's vocabulary test score. After controlling for family factors, home literacy environment score positively predicted children's performance both in vocabulary and reading tests. Magnitudes of differences between the two literacy groups (high and low home literacy environment) became larger in the children from relative lower income families. Magnitudes of differences for vocabulary and reading tests was strikingly large in the low-income group both in vocabulary and reading tests. These findings shed lights on the importance of parent education and family services for low-income families with preschool children.

아동인지능력향상서비스가 만 3-6세 아동의 언어능력 발달에 미치는 영향 : 단기효과성 평가 연구 (The Effect of an Improvement Service for Child Cognitive Ability Aimed at the Development of linguistic Ability in Children between the Ages of 3-6 Years : An Evaluation for Short-term Effectiveness)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short term effectiveness of a cognitive ability improvement service for children, which is one of the 'Investment activities for Local Community Services' conducted by the Ministry for Health and Welfare. Results indicate that the longer the period of using cognitive improvement services for children, the more positively significant influence there is on their language abilities in terms of comprehension, expression, and reading-writing. Furthermore, these influences are stronger in children of low-income families than in children from higher income families. Certainly, this type of service improves infants' language abilities regardless of the income level of their families.

식사구성안을 이용한 저소득층 학령기 어린이의 식생활 평가: 2001년 국민건강.영양조사 자료 분석 (Evaluation of Dietary Intake of Korean School-aged Children from Low-income Families by Comparing with the Korean Food Guide: Analysis of the Data from the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey)

  • 본 연구는 2001년 국민건강 영양조사 자료를 이용하여 초 중 고 학령 어린이를 가구 소득 수준에 따라 저소득가정 어린이와 일반가정 어린이로 분류한 후 신체계측자료 및 영양소와 주요 식품군의 섭취수준을 학령군별로 비교 평가하였다. 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 저소득가정 어린이들과 일반가정 어린이들의 학령군별 연령수준과 성별분포는 유의한 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 2) 저소득가정 어린이들의 신장, 체중, BMI는 일반가정 어린이들보다 전반적으로 낮은 경향이었으나, 이러한 차이는 중학생 학령군의 체중과 BMI에서만 통계적으로 유의하였다. 체중평가 결과의 분포를 비교한 결과, 저체중 또는 과체중의 비율이 두 소득계층간에 유의하게 다르지 않았다. 3) 에너지 섭취수준에는 소득계층에 따른 차이가 나타나지 않았으나, 저소득가정 어린이의 경우 일반가정 어린이 보다 탄수화물에서 섭취하는 에너지 비율이 높고 지방에서 섭취하는 에너지 비율은 낮았다. 4) 일부 미량영양소의 경우, 저소득가정의 초등학생과 중학생 학령군의 평균 섭취수준이 일반가정 어린이들보다 낮았으며, 초등학생 학령군에서 이러한 차이를 보이는 영양소의 수가 더 많았다. 5) 식사구성안을 기준으로 여섯 가지 식품군에 대한 섭취수준을 평가하였을 때, 초등학생 또는 중학생 학령의 저소득가정 어린이들의 경우 우유 유제품과 과일의 평균 섭취수준이 일반가정 어린이들보다 낮았고, 또한 권장 수준보다도 낮은 수준이었다. 중학생과 고등학생 학령의 저소득가정 어린이의 경우, 고기 생선 계란 콩류의 평균 섭취수준이 일반가정 어린이보다 낮았고 이 또한 권장 수준보다 낮았다. 결론적으로 식품섭취 수준에서 본 우리나라 저소득가정 어린이의 식생활 문제는 일반가정 어린이와 공통적 요소를 가지고 있었으나, 그 심각성은 상대적으로 큰 것으로 나타났다. 즉 우유 유제품 및 과일의 섭취 부족은 소득 계층에 관계없이 학령기 어린이의 공통된 식생활 문제로 분석되었으나 이러한 문제가 저소득계층에서 더욱 심화된 양상이었다. 또한 일부 학령군의 저소득가정 어린이는 일반가정 어린이에게서는 발견되지 않는 특수한 식생활 문제로서 고기 생선 계란 콩류의 섭취 부족이 나타났다. 따라서 학령기 저소득층 어린이의 식생활 문제의 해결을 위해서는 일반 어린이와는 다른 접근방식의 보다 적극적인 지원 정책이 필요하며, 기존의 관련 정책 및 사업 또한 이러한 특수성을 고려한 개선이 시급하다. 저소득층 어린이들의 학령군에 따른 상이한 식생활문제 또한 이러한 정책 내용에 반영되어야 할 것이다.

  • This study used Family Group Theraplay (Munns, 2005) to investigate the effects of enhancing interaction between child and mother on mitigating developmental risks for children growing up in low-income households. The subjects for the study were selected from among Community Child Care Centers and Community Welfare Centers in Seoul. The children were in the first, second, and third grades of elementary school. Eleven child-mother dyads participated in Family Group Theraplay once a week for a total of 12 45-minute sessions. The control group consisted of 9 child-mother dyads. The Family Group Theraplay program improved interaction between the children and their mothers and also reduced children's behavior problems and mothers' parenting stress.

그림책읽기 언어중재프로그램이 저소득 가정 아동의 언어능력에 미치는 종단적 영향 (The Longitudinal Effects of an Early Storybook Reading Intervention Program on the Improvement of First Graders' Language Abilities in Low-income Families)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of early storybook reading intervention participation on the first graders' language abilities in low income families. The subjects consisted of 148 first graders and their primary caregivers. The intervention group was composed of 100 first graders who participated in the early storybook reading intervention program in childcare or kindergarten. The comparison group comprised 48 first graders from equivalent social and economic backgrounds, who did not participate in the program. The language abilities of the children were tested and questionnaires regarding the home literacy environment, children's reading activities at home and parents' perceptions of their children's reading behaviors were completed by the children's primary caregivers. The data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling. The results indicated that early intervention participation was directly associated with children's higher language abilities in first grade and indirectly influenced the children's language abilities through the home literacy environment, children's reading activities at home and parents' perceptions of their children's reading behaviors.

Cognitive Spectrum 프로그램이 저소득가정 아동의 발달에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Cognitive Spectrum Program on the Development of Children from Low Income Families)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Cognitive Spectrum Program, a cognitive development program designed to increase children's IQ. The effect of this program was verified using a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects were 127 5-8 year old children. 56 children were assigned to the experimental group and 71 children to the control group. The experimental group participated in thirteen 90 min. long sessions. Quantitative analyses using SPSS WIN 18.0 and qualitative analyses were carried out. The results were as follows: First, this Cognitive Spectrum Program was shown to be effective in improving cognitive development. Second, the amount of improvement in cognitive development was found to be predictive of the amount of change in socioemotional development, demonstrating that attention deficits and overall problem behaviors were greatly reduced among the children whose IQ was improved by this program. This finding was also verified through qualitative analyses.

저소득 가정의 조기개입 프로그램 참여유무에 따른 영유아 발달 및 부모 양육스트레스의 차이 (Effect of Early Intervention Program for Child Development and Parenting Stress from Low Income Families)

  • 본 연구는 저소득 가정의 조기개입 프로그램 참여 유무에 따른 영유아의 발달과 양육자인 부모의 양육스트레스의 차이를 분석하고자 하였다. 연구 대상은 저소득 가정의 만 0세부터 만 5세까지의 영유아와 그 부모이며 현재 조기개입 프로그램인 드림스타트 프로그램에 참여하고 있는 영유아와 참여하지 않는 영유아 그리고 그 부모를 대상으로 하였다. 연구도구로 영유아의 발달을 측정하기 위하여 K-ASQ 검사를 실시하였고, 양육자의 양육스트레스 차이를 측정하기 위하여 Parenting Stress Index/Short Form을 사용하였다. 연구결과는 첫째, 조기개입 프로그램의 참여유무에 따라 저소득가정 영유아의 발달에 차이가 있었다. 특히 조기개입 프로그램에 참여한 영아가 참여하지 않은 영아보다 대근육 운동, 소근육 운동, 문제해결, 의사소통, 개인-사회성 등에서 발달수준이 더 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 조기개입 프로그램에 참여한 저소득 가정의 부모가 참여하지 않은 부모보다 양육스트레스 정도가 더 낮게 나타났다. 이는 저소득 가정의 아동과 부모를 위한 조기개입 프로그램이 영아의 발달을 촉진하고 부모의 양육스트레스를 감소시키는 긍정적인 역할을 하고 있음을 보여주는 결과이다. 결과적으로 조기개입 프로그램은 저소득 가정의 아동 뿐 아니라 그 부모를 대상으로 함께 개입하고 지원해야 하며, 보다 많은 저소득 가정의 영유아 및 가족들이 참여할 수 있도록 대상자 발굴이 지속적으로 이루어져야 한다.
