The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mother's depression, mother's negative self-acceptance, and father's psychological health perceived by mother, meditated by marital quality, on children's internalizing & externalizing behaviors. On the basis of precious literature, the theoretical model was specified and estimated. Subjects of this study consisted of 285 preschool children's mothers(160 boys and 125 girls aged from 5- to 7-year-old) drawn from fine child-care centers in Chung-ju City. The results were as following: Mother's depression was a statistically significant factor directly influencing on children's internalizing & externalizing behaviors and indirectly influencing on children's internalizing behavior through the marital quality. 2. Mother's negative self-acceptance was a statistically significant factor indirectly influencing on children's internalizing behavior through the marital quality. However, it did not haute any effects on either children's internalizing behavior or externalizing behaviors. 3. Father's psychological health perceived by mother was a statistically significant factor indirectly influencing on children's internalizing behaviors through the marital quality and directly influencing on children's externalizing behaviors. 4 Marital quality was strongly related to children's internalizing behaviors both directly and indirectly, however, it was not statistically associated with children's externalizing behaviors. Therefore, the model showed marital quality can be a mediating variable for children's internalizing behaviors only. The findings of results is to generate more broad-minded thinking about how mother's psychological factors, marital quality, and children's internalizing behaviors are interrelated.

This study was aimed to provide the measurement data and shape classification of the head of the Korean male children for the headwear sizing systems. Five hundred twenty male children, aged nine to twelve years, participated f3r this study. The 17 regions on the head and height, weight of the subjects were directly measured by the expert experimenters. Factor analysis, cluster analysis, GLM analysis and Tukey HSD test were performed using these data. Through factor analysis, low factors were extracted upon factor scores and those factors comprised $69.76\%$ for the total variances. Three clusters as their head shape were categorized using four factor scores by cluster analysis. Type 1 was characterized by the widest width and Bitragion arc, shortest head length. Type 2 had the longest head length and the widest side width and the highest head length and head circumference. Type 3 was characterized by the smallest head circumstance, head width and side width, and medium head length.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of obesity has been increasing in Korean children. As an unhealthy diet is known as one of the major determinants of childhood obesity, assessing and monitoring dietary fat intake of children is needed. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This analysis included 9,998 children aged 3-11 yrs from the 2007-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Dietary data were obtained from a single 24-h dietary recall. Intakes of total fat and fatty acids, including saturated fatty acid (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), n-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA), and n-6 fatty acid (n-6 FA) were evaluated as the absolute amount (g) and proportion of energy from each fatty acid (% of energy). The total fat and SFA intake were also assessed according to compliance with dietary guidelines. Linear trends in the dietary fats intake across the survey period were tested using multiple regression models. RESULTS: Total fat intake significantly increased from 38.5g (20.3% of energy) to 43.4g (23.3% of energy) from 2007 to 2017. This increase was mainly accounted for the increases in intakes of SFA (7.2% to 8.4% of energy) and MUFA (6.2% to 7.5% of energy). PUFA intake increased from 4.4 to 4.7% of energy during the 11-yrs period: from 0.57 to 0.63% of energy for n-3 FA and from 3.8 to 4.1% of energy for n-6 FA. The proportions of children who consumed amounts exceeding the dietary guidelines for total fat and SFA significantly increased from 2007 to 2017, with increases from 9.8% to 17.4% for total fat and from 36.9% to 50.9% for SFA. CONCLUSIONS: Prominent increasing trends in the consumption of total fat and SFA but tiny change in n-3 FA intake were observed in Korean children. The healthy intake of dietary fats should be emphasized in this population.
Purpose: The ${\beta}3-adrenergic$ receptor (ADRB3) is expressed in visceral adipose tissue and has been speculated to contribute to lipolysis, energy metabolism, and regulation of the metabolic rate. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of polymorphism of the ADRB3 gene with the sex of children with obesity and related pathologies. Methods: ADRB3 gene trp64arg genotyping was conducted in 441 children aged 6-18 years. Among these subjects, 264 were obese (103 boys; 161 girls) and 179 were of normal weight (81 boys; 98 girls). In the obese group, fasting lipids, glucose and insulin levels, and blood pressure were measured. Metabolic syndrome (MS) was defined according to the modified World Health Organization criteria adapted for children. Results: The frequency of trp64arg genotype was similar in obese and normal weight children. In obese children, serum lipid, glucose, and insulin levels; homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) scores; and MS were not different between arg allele carriers (trp64arg) and noncarriers (trp64trp). In 264 obese children, genetic analysis results revealed that the arg allele carriers were significantly higher in girls than in boys (p=0.001). In the normal weight group, no statistically significant difference was found between genotypes of boys and girls (p=0.771). Conclusion: Trp64arg polymorphism of the ADRB3 gene was not associated with obesity and MS in Turkish children and adolescents. Although no relationships were observed between the genotypes and lipids, glucose/insulin levels, or HOMA-IR, the presence of trp64arg variant was frequent in obese girls, which can lead to weight gain as well as difficulty in losing weight in women.
As an appraisal of Water Fluoridation Program in Chungju, fluoride content in the water of that city was examined, and 1176 K primary school children aged from 6 to 13 were surveyed on their oral hygiene status. The results were as followings: 1. Fluoride content ............ 0.8 ppm 2. dmf rate ............ 59.27% DMF rate ............ 39.46% 3. dmf t rate/index ............ 27.75%/2.40 dmf s rate/index ............ 11.91%/5.14 4. DMF T rate/index ............ 6.12%/0.93 DMF S rate/index ............ 1.65%/1.26
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress caused by having a senior in high school preparing for the college entrance examination, and coping methods of middle aged women in order to have a high quality of life. Method: The subjects of this study were 410 middle aged women. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire during September 5 to October 26, 2005. Result: The respondents' scores of stress were relatively low. The scores of stress perception related to 'studies record inactivity', 'a bad feeling because their sons and daughters are lazy', and worries about fatigue and health of their sons and daughters' were relatively high. The scores of the coping method related to 'affirmative thought and conduct', and 'sincerity it in the senior in high school student' were relatively high. In subjects with a higher degree(score$\geq$3) of stress caused by the senior student in high school the scores of coping methods related to 'projection', 'evasion', and 'perseverance' were relatively higher than the scores of coping methods of subjects with a lower degree (score<3) of stress. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, we should develop an integrated support program for middle-aged women. A place must be made where mothers will be able to discuss the education of their children such as on-line group community by mothers.
Objective: This study is to confirm the effect of mothers' perception of children's rights on the happiness of infants under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Methods: This study was conducted on 383 mothers with children aged 3 to 5 attending daycare centers in Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Results: First, the difference in perception of children's rights according to the mother's general background did not show a significant difference in the mother's perception of children's rights, and the child's sense of happiness showed a statistically significant difference in the mother's education and child's gender. Second, there was a positive correlation between the mother's perception of child rights and the child's sense of happiness. Third, the effect of mothers' perception of child rights on children's happiness was significant, and in the sub-factors, it was found that the perception of participation rights had a significant effect on children's happiness. Conclusion/Implications: In this study, it was confirmed that mothers' perception of children's rights is important in promoting the happiness of early childhood children. Through this study, we would like to raise the need for parental education based on education on children's rights for mothers' awareness and practice of children's rights.
This study was conducted to evaluate the dietary quality of school-aged children from low-income families in comparison with those from higher income families. The socio-demographic and anthropometric data and one day 24-hour recall dietary intake data of 1,782 school-aged children were used for analysis from the data of 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey. The children whose family had monthly household income 120% or lower than the 2001 Minimum Cost of Living were classified into Low Income Group (LIG), and the others were classified into Higher Income Group (HIG). The consumption levels of the food groups of the Korean Food Guide as well as the general nutritional status based on their weight and height, energy and nutrient intake were compared between LIG and HIG in elementary (n = 989), middle (n = 432), and high (n = 361) school-aged children, respectively. LIG tended to have lower weight, height, and BMI than HIG, but the difference was significant only in the weight and the BMI of the middle school-aged children. The energy intake of LIG didn't differ from that of HIG, but LIG consumed a higher percentage of energy from carbohydrate and a lower percentage of energy from fat than HIG. Some micronutrient intake was lower in LIG than HIG in case of the elementary and the middle school-aged children. The average numbers of servings of milk dairy products and fruits consumed by LIG were significantly lower than those consumed by HIG in the elementary and the middle school-aged children, and they were less than the respective recommended serving. The average number of servings of meat fish egg beans consumed by LIG was lower than that consumed by HIG in the middle and the high school-aged children, and it was also less than the recommended serving. The results suggested that the diet of children from low-income families should be intervened by strategies different from the other children in order to improve the consumption level of milk dairy products, fruits, and meat fish egg beans.
The study examined the mental representation of children in foster care through the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB) and reviewed difference between children in foster care and typical children in terms of mental representation. Subjects of the study included a total of 50 children: 25 children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, in foster care in Gyeonggi Province, and 25 typical children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The research findings are summarized as follows: First, in terms of mental representation, children in foster care showed less subjects of empathic relations and more subjects of disorganized aggression than typical children. Second, children in foster care showed lower coherence mental representation than typical children. Finally, children in foster care were more likely to fail in emotional regulation than typical children in mental representation.

The aim of this study was to investigate difference of child's dental fear and agreement between parent/child dyads according to parental rearing style. The subjects were 801 children aged 8 and 11-year old and their parents in Jeonju city. The parents were asked to answer a questionnaire which included four parental rearing style and the Children's Fear Survey Schedule - Dental Subscale(CFSS-DS) at home. Also, the CFSS-DS was completed by 8 and 11 years old children in a classroom. Authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and neglectful parenting styles were 53.4%, 45.8%, 0.2% and 0.6% respectively. Authoritative and permissive parents reported 5.7 and 7.5 points higher than dental fear scores reported by their children. At 8 years old, children of authoritative parents were significantly 3.9 points higher than them of permissive parents(p = 0.002). Also, parent/child dyads showed moderate agreement assessing dental fear at aged 8. Parenting styles are related to children's dental fear, and especially 8-year-old girls in authoritative parenting styles have the highest dental fear. However, as age increased, the impact of parental styles on children's dental fear decreased.
