  • This study was conducted to compare the fluoride concentrations in urine of preschool children aged 3${\sim}$6 years between residing in community water fluoridation area(Kwangju City) and non-fluoridation area(Sungnam City). The acid-diffusible fluoride in the urine and drinking water was isolated by the acid-diffusion technique and measured with a fluoride electrode. The mean daily fluoride excretion to urine of children residing in Kwangju and Sungnam were $1.27{\pm}0.75mgF^-$/g creatinine and $0.87{\pm}47 mgF^-$/g creatinine, respectively. It is concluded from this investigation that the $F^-$concentration in urine sample of kindergarten and drinking water of children living in Kwanju(fluoridated areas) were significantly higher than that of children living in Sungnam(non-fluoridated areas).

  • This study examined the effects of demographic characteristics (education, income level) on the relationships among knowledge of textile fibers, information searching behavior on textile fabrics, and information sources of textile materials in children's clothings. The subjects were 307 mothers with preschool children(4∼6years) in Seoul. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using T-test analysis of variance, corelations, and crosstabulation analysis. The results indicated that : (1) Educational levels of consumers had significant influences on knowledge of textile fibers, information searching behavior on textile fabric, and information sources of textile materials in children's clothings. (2) There were significant relationship between consumer's knowledge of textile fibers and information searching behavior on textile materials in children's clothings.

  • This study investigated preschoolers' emotionality, emotional knowledge, event knowledge, and interpersonal problem solving strategies according to their sex and age, and the relationships among them. Subjects were 116 preschoolers (73 boys and 43 girls; 68 four- and 48 five-year-olds). Results showed that girls were higher in negative emotionality (sadness) than boys. Also, 5-year-old children were higher in emotional knowledge, event knowledge, and forceful problem solving strategies than 4-year-olds. Furthermore, children's event knowledge was positively related to their relevant problem solving strategies, while children's event knowledge was negatively related to their forceful problem solving strategies. These findings provide a preliminary evidence that children's event knowledge may predict their interpersonal problem solving strategies.

  • This research examined the development in Korean children of the comprehension of complex sentences. The relative difficulty in comprehension of the temporal conjunctions "before" and "after" was investigated. The order of mention, contextual support, and syntactic appearance was controlled. The role of cognitive strategies and developmental changes in the comprehension of these conjunction was included in this study. Subjects were 90 preschool children between 3 and 5 years of age. The task was a sentence-picture matching problem having 3 types of sentences combining temporally with "before" or "after". The results were that developmental changes in comprehension of the temporal conjunctions "before' and "after" in Korean children depended on the order of mention, contextual support, and such syntactic factors as the position of the subject of the sentence. The importance of the consistency in the occurrence of events and the order of mention in the acquisition of complex sentences among Korean children is similar to the acquisition of complex sentences in other languages.

  • Child obesity has become a significant health issue in Korea. Prevalence of obesity in school-age children in Korea has been alarmingly rising since 2008. Prevalence of obesity among infants and preschool-age children in Korea has doubled since 2008. Obese children may develop serious health complications. Before nutritional counseling is pursued, several points should be initially considered. The points are modifiable risk factors, assessment for child obesity, and principles of treatment. Motivational interviewing and a multidisciplinary team approach are key principles to consider in managing child obesity effectively in the short-term as well as long-term. Nutritional counseling begins with maintaining a daily log of food and drink intake, which could possibly be causing obesity in a child. Several effective tools for nutritional counseling in practice are the Traffic Light Diet plan, MyPlate, Food Balance Wheel, and 'Food Exchange Table'. Detailed nutritional counseling supported by a qualified dietitian is an art of medicine enabling insulin therapy and hypoglycemic agents to effectively manage diabetes mellitus in obese children.

In this study, traits of children in families of interethnic immigrant marriages were studied by individual interviews of ten kindergarten teachers responsible for them and 8 observations of their preschool classes. Subjects were 21(13 male, 8 female) 3- to 5-year-old children. Results showed the diverse traits of these children : they adapted to the environment by changing and getting along, but some of them exhibited problematic behavior such as delayed language development, confused identity, and aggression. The attitude of their peers included passive reaction, discord and receptivity regarding their difference. The attitude of the teachers was a sense of responsibility and worry.

  • Sleep disorders are very common among pediatric patients. Its prevalence is between 10% and 45% in preschool- and school-aged children. However parents commonly do not concern about their children's sleeping habits and for many pediatricians, there is not part of the routine office visit about a childs sleep. Sleep disorders were classified by International Classification of Sleep Disorder (ICSD) as dyssomnias, parasomnias, sleep disorders associated with mental, neurologic, or other medical disorders, and proposed sleep disorders. There are lots of differences in the causes, manifestations, and managements of sleep disorders between children and adult. The sleep disorders in childhood may manifest themselves as bedtime resistance, refusal to go to bed at a parentally described time, sleep-onset delay, inability to fall asleep within a reasonable time, prolonged nighttime awakening, and inability to return to sleep without assistance after waking during the night, and so have wide-ranging influences on children's behavior, mood, school performance, and family life. It's very important for pediatrician to concern about the sleep disturbances in childhood and so the problems of sleep in children should be early detected and managed.

  • A total of 227 children and their mothers participated in this study of the relationships between mother's thinking style and parenting self-efficacy and between parenting self-efficacy and children's social competence. Data were gathered with Thinking Style Scale Questionnaire, Parenting Self-efficacy Scale, and Social Competency Scale: Preschool. Correlation and multiple regressions were used for data analyses. A statistically significant correlation between mother's thinking styles and parenting self-efficacy and between mother's parenting self-efficacy and children's social competence emerged. That is, mothers whose thinking styles were legislative, hierarchical, and liberal had more parenting self-efficacy, and children whose mothers felt more confidence in their parenting had a higher degree of social competence.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between preschoolers' temperament, mothers' parenting behaviors, and ability to delay gratification. A sample of 131 preschool children aged from 4 to 5 participated in a delay-of-gratification experiment, as reconstructed by Rodriguez and his colleagues (2005). Mothers answered questionnaires on their parenting behaviors and children's temperament. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regressions. Children's activity as well as mothers' warmth and control predicted the ability to delay gratification; significant interaction effects were found between children's activity and maternal warmth on the ability to delay gratification. It would be plausible to intervene in children's activity level and improve the ability to delay gratification.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate effect of parents-centered speech intervention program on overall speech and language performances of children with cochlear implant. Ten pairs of mother and child were selected and assigned into two groups: intervention group(G1) and control group(G2). G1 included 5 children with cochlear implant and their mothers who joined the parents-centered program. G2 consisted of 5 children with cochlear implant and their mothers did not participate in the program. To evaluate their speech and language abilities, examination instruments(Preschool Language Scale, and Language Comprehension and Cognition Test) were analyzed. Performances of pre- and post-treatment were analysed by ANOVA procedure. The results were as follows: There were significant differences of speech and language performances between pre- and post-treatment in G1. But there were no significant differences in G2(therapists centered program). G1 showed better performances in language comprehension than G2. This study revealed that parents centered language intervention program would be effective for speech and language development for children with cochlear implant.
