The purpose of this study was to investigate children's(K-5) conceptions about light in Korea. The two aspect of children's conceptions about light were identified : the sources of light, the nature of vision. Data were collected from 92 children by a mixture of writing, drawing and interview, and were analysed by systematic networks. The major findings of this study were as follows : 1. Children showed an awareness of a wide variety of sources of light. The predominant sources exampled by children were primary sources. 2. Children explained vision as intentional activity of seeing Seeing. means action that move their heal or eyes to the objects. Infants(K-1) did not recognize that light are needed for vision. 3. A notable features in children's conceptions about light were context-dependent.
This study examined whether preschool children's meta-socialization (conceptions of social situations) and their responses differed by children's social competence. Participants were 74 kindergarten children living in Seoul, Korea. Results showed differences in children's conceptions of social-conventional and personal situations by social competence and differences in children's responses to moral situations by social competence. Children with higher social competence had a tendency to negative social-conventional violations and they showed a general acceptance in personal choices, whereas children with lower social competence made frequent responses of 'retaliatory' and 'involve adults' in moral situations.
This study examined whether preschool children's meta-socialization (conceptions of social situations) and their responses differed according to the children's gender. The participants were 78 preschool children living in Seoul, Korea. The results showed gender differences in the children's conceptions of social situations and in their responses to social situations. Firstly, a girl's conceptual judgments about social situations were more developed and dependent on the teacher's authority. Secondly, the boys showed direct and physical responses, while girls showed indirect, linguistic, and emotional responses in moral and social-conventional situations. In addition, girls made more frequent responses to 'Choice Assertion' in personal situations than boys.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among teachers' conceptions of art education, and children's creative personality by mediating effects of teachers' role of creativity improvement. Participants included 156 teachers and 593 children in kindergartens and child care centers. Results indicated the following. First, the higher teacher's concepts of art education was the higher their role of creativity improvement was and children's creative personality was. Second, teachers' conceptions of art education and their role of creativity improvement were positively influenced by the children's creative personality. Third, the children's creative personality was influenced by the teachers' conceptions of art education and the their role of creative improvement control and the mediating effects of the teachers' role of creative improvement was significant in a partial way. The implication is that the teachers' conceptions of art education may enhance the their role of creative improvement and foster children's creative personality.
This study examined preschool children's conceptions of social situations and mothers' responses toward their children in the home context. Participants were 78 kindergarten children and their mothers living Seoul, Korea. Results indicated that children did not distinguish social-conventional situations from moral situations, but they clearly distinguished social-conventional and moral situations from personal situations. Mothers' reported that they would make indirect responses to children's behaviors in moral situations to highlight intrinsic consequences such as violating others' rights and happiness. In contrast, they said that they would make direct responses such as mentioning rules and manners in social-conventional situations. Mothers supported their children's choices in personal situations unless the situations were dangerous or detrimental to children's health.
The purpose of this study was to investigate children's conceptions about gender and the relation between gender conceptions and preference for gender related tasks. 130 children were interviewed about gender and gender related tasks. Data were analyzed with the component model of gender schema. Results indicated that children's gender schema in the attitudes domain was significantly different with age in all components but not different with sex. The gender schema in the knowledge domain was significantly different with age in within component and between component links, and with sex in the gender label-component and within component links. The difference between the gender inhibitory score and gender facilitative score was significantly different with age, sex, and children's gender schema. The findings that gender schema influenced the children's preferences for gender related tasks suggests a theoretical rationale of gender schema theory.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate developmental trends and relationships between justice and friendship. Four different interviews were administered individually to fifty 4-to 8-year old children. In the Justice domain, the interviews consisted of open-ended questions devised to investigate the children's understanding of justice and a hypothetical story dilemma based on Damon(1977). In the friendship domain, the interviews consisted of open-ended questions based on Bigelow(1975; 1977) and Damon(1977) and a hypothetical story dillema based on Selman(1981). The developmental stage of each concept was determined through content analysis of the responses each child. Statistical analysis of obtained data was by percentage and Goodman-Kruskal's ${\gamma}$. * The results showed that children's conceptions of justice and of friendship developed in an age-related manner during early and middle childhood. While there was a significant correlation between children's conceptions of justice and friendship, this result was due to age-relatedness. The results of the present study support a domain specific approach to social cognition.
The purpose of the present study was to determine and describe preschool children's conceptions of their social situation (moral, social-conventional, and personal situation) in the context of their homes and classrooms. The subjects of this study included 78 children who were enrolled in a kindergarten in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, Korea. The results of this study indicated that children were able to distinguish the difference between a classroom and the home using information of very concrete content when they conceptualized three social situations. In the socially-controlled domain (the moral and social-conventional), children recognized that a classroom was more restricted and rigid than the home, and they depended more heavily on the teachers' authority. By way of contrast, in the personal domain, they depended more heavily on parents, with whom they were more intimate, but who exerted authority in a stronger and more direct manner than the teachers.
The purpose of this study is to understand the parent's social cognition about disciplines in the context of korean culture by analyzing and interpretating theories of discipline and conceptions of parental role in disciplining children presented in the books for domestic life educatio of the chosen Dynasty period. The method used for this study is the historical method and the literatures of analysis are Naihun, Gyubeomseonyoung, Sasojol, Jongbo-Salimgyoungjai, Hahagjinam. Accoding to analysis, the disciplinary theory for children had the basis on the ideas that children learned through everyday expieriences and observation of surounding events, and that crytical periods of learning were at the early childhood. And parents assumed the responsibility for disciplining their children. Also the Chosen Dynasty period had the conceptions that parents had rigorous quality as well as warm-hearted toward their children and teached honor, modesty, plainess and industry.
In this study of the formation of concepts of inclusion by non-disabled preschoolers in inclusive classroom settings, the researcher conducted participant observation and in-depth interviews from March 2004 through June 2005 in a single day care center offering inclusive education in Kyung-gi Province. The non-disabled children exhibited changes in their conception of disability through interactions with disabled children. The non-disabled children could be grouped into three categories: those who were wary of or disregarded disabled peers; those who disregarded disabled peers while helping them out; and those who actively cared for their disabled peers. Not all children went through the same developmental stages. The speed and degree of change in conception varied depending on the individual.
